I won't answer any questions about Hollywood scandals or any TMZ like gossip. I'd love to chat with real film makers. Also, anything you can easily google I won't answer either.

zero to zero but thanks for the question

How dead is movie production in hollywood? Is it all moving somewhere cheaper?

How dead is movie production in hollywood? Is it all moving somewhere cheaper?

It's barely breathing. I know of a few productions spotted around LA but most are going elsewhere. Productions ship to Canada because they can buy the Canadian dollar cheap (I'm talking millions upon millions). Then, when the currency flips they can make money and get tax incentive.

I'm in art department. I'm finding work harder and harder to come by these past few years despite belonging to unions in 2 different jurisdictions
Are you in a similar boat at all

I am yes, I'm a DIT - So the only person that really hires me is a DP and I'm a one person department. Gotta guy more fancy gear to impress people to keep the rent paid... Certainly a dark time for all of us right now.

In general, how does one get started in Hollywood without actually going there? Is it really just networking? And how the fuck do you even network as a writer?

My wife writes and we want to stay the fuck out of that town.

These threads are underrated, they should be doing Iron Man numbers so you don't care anymore.

What does she write?

Dude. You handle and backup and catalog memory cards. I’d say get a grip, but even grips have more to do with filmaking and light and creating movies.

I appreciate your role. But it’s basically a PA that didn’t fuck up and a DIT took 30 to train you to not fuck up. And, I wish you well on your journey to do whatever you want to do, if you have any talent or technical skill. If not, hope it’s a union gig and you’ve got your hours. 15 years, I image you don’t, so you coast. So, what really can you tell anyone? The DIT told you test and not reuse the RED or SxS card?

Tell us something we don’t know.

Some of us don't know shit.

I’m not up on all the writing terminology, but I think it’s screenplays and plays that take place on stages?

I *think* she’s good. She submitted one of her stories to a writing group and one of the guys liked it so much he got a reading with a bunch of actors from Hollywood.

I want to support her but I have no idea how. Is it just up to her to keep getting people to read her stuff?

Thank you kindly, it's nice to chat with people who are nice and want to have a discussion.

That would be a DMT (Data Management Technician) or a DUT. Digital Imaging Technicians do a lot more than what you're describing. Maybe you should take the c-stand out of your asshole and notice how the industry is changing and passing you by at the same time. Tell you something you don't know? Shit, I don't think I have enough time for that...

She needs a manager or agent, it's significantly harder without one, mind you, it's been done a few times without one but it's not easy.

If 28 Years Later is a big hit, do you think more productions will start using iPhones or other consumer-grade electronics to film?

The road to being a writer is a strange one. It isn't a straight line and some people get lucky. I'd recommend as a thoughtform to check out the Master Class on Television writing... I think it will have everything you need to get started, or at the very least, wrap your head around it.

If 28 Years Later is a big hit, do you think more productions will start using iPhones or other consumer-grade electronics to film?

I don't think they will, if you've seen some of the BTS of that shoot, they are using over 200K worth of camera and grip gear (lenses dolly's etc)... Just to slap a camera on to it... Same process, just a smaller sensor.

So tell me what I don’t know about filming and sets, because, yeah, you basically handle memory card from a camera … bigger set, bigger title … zero ability to handle real analog film or creative effort.

Glad the dailies were uploaded, anon. But you weren’t even responsible for the IT network.

You sit at your cart. Do what you’re trained to do.

Shit, even the teamster driving the trucks don’t larp like they’re a “filmmaker”

What part of Digital Imaging don't you understand? It isn't my job to handle analog film emultion. You're either a mid-tier troll, or a complete moron.

If you aren't a troll, here's some education. I know you wish you got paid as much as me but hauling around sandbags isn't top tier work. I'll be in my tent, goodbye.

But how does that compare to a normal camera set up? And if your regular camera breaks do you have to wait for a repairman, or would there be a benefit to being able to send a PA to the nearest Apple Store?

Reminder this attention seeking faggot has ZERO PROOF and claims he "doesn't want to be doxed"
Not to mention any answers he gives are so vague or general it's useless

The iPhone set up and a normal camera set up uses the same gear... The only difference is the camera. Same lenses, lighting, grip gear etc. The rental house will have cameras that can be brought in if something breaks.

Oh lol. I never said I you work with analogue. I said you don’t have the skills. You manage the cards. Look, it’s critical. If you fuck up, the take is (maybe) lost (if it can’t be recovered) or if you’re too stupid to notify the DOP. Otherwise, maybe, your loading the DOP’s LUTS into monitors. Even then if you fuck up the editor will apply LUTs in post.
Id ask you to get me a sandbag, but thats union. And often more useful on set

Who are you trying to impress, gawd? You're nobody here, braj.

I feel bad for you, your mental health and your family.

I'm a DIT on set.

I have also worked in post as a commercial assistant editor, editor and colorist... I also write indie shorts and DP here and there. What do you do besides shove c-stands up your ass and try and belittle people.

U mad, larper? Do u even 4:2:2?

I'm not the dude you were replying to, but I do enjoy these threads.

why do movies from even the 80s look better than every movie coming out now
none of these movies coming out look real real, they look like fucking fan movies

The short answer is, people are afraid to lose their jobs and camera sensors are really good. If you always expose a perfect image it will look bland. People expose perfect images to keep their jobs.

Can me, a chubby guy in late 30s start acting or is it too late

I've heard Aliens looks like shit because Jim Cameron insisted in using the wrong kind of film even against his DP's wishes.
No question, I just wanted to point that out.

Nope, if you're good and you fit a neiche you can do anything.

That's for stopping by

Would it be worth it for me to finally sit down and write a screen play? I’m well familiar with the format, I read old scripts plenty. I spend a lot of time just coming up with and fleshing out stories and while I’d call myself a solid “story teller”, I’ve never been that good of a “descriptive writer” like a book requires - hence why I’ve gravitated towards the idea of writing scripts since it’s a medium that requires much less descriptive wording. I’ve got a handful of ideas that I think are “first script” material, being the kind of thing that might be attractive to a studio; A throwback slasher trilogy, an arthousey soldiers vs supernatural tale, and a based on real events legal drama/thriller.

How difficult do you think it would be to get a script even considered in any capacity, presuming the work you have out into it is solid? Does having a boss who has a nephew that works in the industry looking over scripts seem like it would give me an edge to go anywhere?

I don't want to deter you from being creative first and foremost. Script writing is very unqiue, you really need to understand how screen direction works, how AD's will break down a script since it requires simple direction to move a story forward. Having said that, everyone can learn and if you have an idea that NEEDS to be written do it. I would say if you're writing to get rich or head into an industry you're not that interested in, maybe take up novel or short story writing first.

Any cool/fun company crew gifts you got?

Any cool/fun company crew gifts you got?

This is the best question I've received so far. It really depends on the budget and the creatvity of the production. I've had everything from branded Jackets, T-shirts, speakers, battery banks, hats, sweaters, firm handshakes, you name it!

Getting rich would be wonderful, though if I ever actually was successful and made millions, I would just spend most of the money on a pet project of mine that I would love to see adapted into a 24 episode animated format. I’ve already done some short story writing for this aforementioned story - writing scenes and some collaborative storytelling, although lately I’m feeling compelled to finish plotting and write out a four chapter side story. It’s all centered around a world and characters I’m most fond of, but I recognize it would be incredibly niche and I doubt would have much success - though I think it could do gang busters in the Japanese market. Otakus love shit.

The aforementioned script ideas are well thought out ideas that have been nagging me as ripe to see on a screen - though I have been mentally editing that supernatural soldier script to include more esoteric elements in the third act. I’m such a fan of stories where stone cold professionals who think they have it all figured out end up thrust into a situation beyond their understanding of the world. Which is also a solid descriptor for that slasher trilogy, given the third film has a supernatural explanation to the killer and why the cop protagonists can’t stop him.

Cool dude, good luck putting it all together!

OP here,

gonna jet in 30 if you have any other questions

Booze?

When some rando on the street sees and points out your "xyz film crew" shirt, are you, "why yes! I did abcd on it." or, "uhh... no... my friend did and umm, got me a shirt..."

Hungary is the go to location these days. Stop making shit up. You live in your moms basement.

I only wear the swag when I'm working to show off like everyone else.

Look it up retard, Canada tops the producers lists for 2025. Hungary can't shoot multiple formats... Doesn't have enough infrastructure.

If I never make it, I'll be the greatest thing they've ever lost/passed up on. Just wanted to say that.

Any suggestions on which of the three I should put my efforts toward first?

The slasher trilogy is a throwback to those early 2000s comfy vibes that films like Freddy vs Jason had. Slashers are now in the meta again and with films like Terrifier being massive hits, I can imagine that high gore films aren’t untouchable things nowadays. Oh! Each one is a holiday film - the first set on and the week following Halloween, the second set during the week leading up to Christmas, and the final entry being set around Valentine’s Day. It’s also worth noting that the third film ends up being sort of an action movie like Hatchet 3.

The soldier movie started off as an idea that the classic Anon Babble story of J376 would make a great film, but lately I’ve had the idea to merge the third act with another film concept I’d never really fleshed out much; think of that concept like a supernatural and esoteric resident evil style thing. Guns and gore, but a script that definitely has some prime psychologically disturbing moments. Originally through of as something with an arthouse vibe, but now I think could be more mainstream.

The legal thriller is based around a guy who had some cops with a personal vendetta against him. The jist of the story revolves around a lawyer who gets hired and initially assumes his client to be guilty as well as we the audience do, but as the story drags on it becomes clear there’s a web of corruption and a conspiracy to frame his client. Some liberties with the truth taken in order to streamline some events, as well as make it a touch more dramatic, but the first half and the conclusion would remain mostly accurate to the actual events.

Is Channing really an ultimate gay sluthole?

If I never make it, I'll be the greatest thing they've ever lost/passed up on. Just wanted to say that.

Solid words, love the confidence.

Any suggestions on which of the three I should put my efforts toward first?

Whatever feels the most genuine for you. A good script needs an authentic voice.

Is Channing really an ultimate gay sluthole?

I have no idea, what do you think?

1637544475721.jpg - 1022x1024, 112.88K

Trash, unoriginal, and cringe.

Dunno. Go back to sharty? Forever. Kek, it’s kino. How do you respond without getting mad?

Well I heard he basically made career by sleeping with men in high places and apparently being exceedingly good at it.

Idk, when you put it that way, it makes me think I should go back the one idea I had a while ago. It was a script idea I’d fleshed out and written some scenes for as a way to cope with a relationship that had just crumbled around me and left me devastated. Eventually I just didn’t have it in me to do anything else with it, but I think it was probably the most *true* script idea I’d ever had. Sure, I’m not a hitman like the protagonist is, but that didn’t mean the protagonist wasn’t still ME and it didn’t mean that the love interest wasn’t still HER. It’s a script about a hitman who meets a cop and the two of them fall in love, but there’s no fancy Mr. Right ending - what the two of them do in life simply makes them incompatible, pushing them away from each other.

It’s all in the execution that makes something worthwhile, nothings original until you apply some paint to it that nobody else has yet.

Well I heard he basically made career by sleeping with men in high places and apparently being exceedingly good at it.

Hell, whatever gets you there I guess.

Idk, when you put it that way, it makes me think I should go back the one idea I had a while ago

Whatever you decide to do, the story needs a clear and confident voice. If you have to explain too much and not let the work speak for itsself, it will be hard to read and ultimately hard to share and sell. You don't have to write sell outs, just a clear unique perspective.

What are the odds of writing something good and some studio cocksucker stealing it though? According to Anon Babble that happens aplenty.

You can register scripts and stories.

Yeah, I know, copywrite and all that, but I’ve always heard on here that it happens.

I'm out

godspeed

I (not OP) am a no-name-award-winning feature film writer and short film director with pro PA experience. AMA

What's a DIT

Digital Imaging Technician. From what I've read, they basically organize and manage the digital files for the camera team. Probably an important role, but it's odd to me that the camera department gets all those little roles for all the little tasks while sound often gets told "just do it all urself lmao"

Film is a visual medium, first and foremost. There was no sound when it first came out, they haven't known what to do since.

Not OP, but I'm in some writing circles and know people in a similar position. Seems like the easiest approach is to turn the scripts into films and put them on YouTube and/or submit them to festivals. Easiest way to get writing noticed these days is through completed films. The slush pile is just too big. Kind of silly imo, but it is what it is.

can't remember which, but one of the camera department roles emerged during the transition from film to digital and I guess just never went away.

That's some bullshit. Even most of those "silent" era films were created with the intention of music being played alongside them, and sometimes that even meant a composed score. Only very rarely are films intended to be watched in silence made, and they're usually arthouse fare like Zen for Film or portions of Chelsea Girls.
Film is an audio-visual format.

The role you're thinking of is the one we're referring to.

why did she do that on purpose? another minecraft attention whore?
