People always say that, but I grew up in the 2000s, and all I ever had to do to know basically everything I'd ever need to know about the 70s, 80s, and 90s was watch those VH1 "I Love the (Decade)" shows, and I never had any trouble with MST3K references.
They're especially heavy with specific 70s things when they watch shit from the 70s, but it was all there in I Love the 70s, Billy Beer, streaking, disco duck, Donny Osmond, whatever, I got basically everything they made jokes about.

The closest I've ever heard to there being drama between them was at the height of their solo projects, Mike suggested a playful "RiffTrax vs. Cinematic Titanic" rivalry to rile up the fans (in a joking way) and stir up publicity for them both, but Joel wasn't interested. Note that this was years before the RiffTrax MST3K Reunion Live Show, so they all seem fine with each other.

I think it was Shout Factory that bought the rights from him finally, and then sort of handed the reins to Joel, but I think it's way apparent now that while Joel was the guy who originally came up with the idea, it's guys like Kevin, Trace, and especially Mike who made it what people loved.

You just haven't watched the right ones. There's some that are dull enough that even the jokes can't save it, I'll admit that, but those also aren't the episodes that I recommend to people. I always tell people to start with the later seasons, particularly stuff like "Space Mutiny", "Werewolf", or "Hobgoblins". Those movies are goofy enough that it's funny even without the jokes, and they're good "entry level" episodes. If you think those are boring episodes, I don't know what to tell you but this show just isn't for you.

This is not a show that you start from the beginning on, because the first couple of seasons are really rough, and even the creators would tell you that.
