Why isn't Payne talked about more here? His movies are great
What are his other movies about? Holdovers was terrific
Downsizing sent him to obscurity
It cannot be overstated exactly how true this is
Easily his worst movie
And at a time when he needed a comeback win, hopefully it's not too late to start with Holdovers
Election is great
So far as I've seen, they all follow similar theming and even some motifs that stick out. Sideways was the first I watched and I was pretty shocked by how similar it was to the Holdovers. Nebraska is similar in some ways also but focuses on different themes.
That's one I haven't watched yet because it had a very low rating compared to his other movies and I recall the trailers for it looking pretty shit back when it released.
There's a few "I'm watching Sideways again" threads a week. Sideways is so fucking good.
Her pussy gets so wet you wouldn't believe it
He got #metoo'd by Rose McGowan a few years back. The weird thing is she complimented him on how big his dick was even though she said it was statutory rape.
Ok cool. Ill bookmark them
His movies are great

descendants was a nice little contemplative movie.
It's the worst out of a great set of movies. Downsizing is the only one I would call an even mediocre movie.
Praising his diq size is a weird way to out a pdf
Still need to dig into Election. Have no interest in him (looks like milquetoast whining) except Holdovers, which is obviously firing on all cylinders.
Clooney's smugness permeates everything. His feeling of setback blah blah just seem like a lady of means asking for her smelling salts before she faints on the chaise lounge.
The weird thing is she complimented him on how big his dick was
It's how compulsive liars make their stories more convincing. The mentality is "I can't be lying because I admitted he had a big dick, if I was lying to hurt him I'd obviously say it was small!"
In reality the project she was hired to work on with him literally required her to be 18 and happened in the 90s when she was an adult. She picked a real encounter and deliberately "misremembered" the important detail of her age so that if she ended up with her back to the wall caught in the lie she could just blame it all on faulty memory. Yet another trait of the pathologically dishonest. McGowan tried to make the metoo thing entirely about herself at every opportunity because she has a laundry list of personality disorders.
I agree, Clooney really brought down the movie's tone. It feels like the studio pushed him to cast a big name actor
You left me on a street corner
Sounds more like she was pissed he pumped and dumped than anything else.
Bingo. She seethed about it for 30 years and decided to take the opportunity to exploit the political climate to get him back for hurting her feelings by casually trying to ruin his entire life. This is the type of thing that seems totally reasonable if you're operating on enough levels of BPD.
Why isn't Payne talked about more here?
For a very talented writer/director he took massive hiatuses when his career should've been in full flight. He took a seven year break between Sideways and Descendants and then another four years between Descendants and Downsizing, the latter of which was a terrible disappointment. Then the statutory rape allegation from Rose McGowan came so he seemingly took that as another opportunity to take a hiatus and then it was another six years between Downsizing and Holdovers.
Only 4 films over a 19 year period off the back of a string of modern classics is an almost glacial output. I guess in his favour is that aside from Downsizing he has a virtually flawless filmography with every movie being good or great.
You would think she would realise how easy it was to disprove her allegations, which Payne did when he addressed them, but I guess literally no repercussions happened to her so might as well throw as many accusations as you want out there because you're not going to get punished for them and if your career is already over they're not risking losing anything.
I'd rather a director put out great films sparsely than a bunch of movies of varying quality. What the fuck happened with Downsizing, anyway?
Literally the only good movie made in the last decade.
Correct
I'd rather a director put out great films sparsely than a bunch of movies of varying quality.
I agree and as I said it works in his favour but I also think he's the kind of talent that could've consistently put out high quality movies during that time. It seems strange to me that he was just content to do nothing. Taking a seven year break after your biggest hit is a risky career move.
Why would you rank 6 of only 8 films?
Sideways is a true 10/10

He's a kino machine. His Great Plains sensibilities make him better than most of those LA jews.
What was his fucking problem?
Marrying the wrong woman. If you go into a bachelor weekend asking if you should marry your fiance, you shouldn't. The point of the movie (so far as I can tell) was that you have to let others make their mistakes and that you can only recognize them as mistakes in retrospect (the same way you need to look at wine sideways in a glass, hence the title).
Marrying the wrong woman
More like being the wrong man. Stephanie would have done nothing for him in the long run
Jack was basically a rabid dog chasing cars
I've only seen Sideways, so I have no interest in any of his other movies
Kino comment
Marrying the wrong woman
He has absolutely no real hesitations about marrying Stephanie. The moment he realises how much he's fucked up and is at risk of losing her he's hysterical.
I love Sideways, but Holdovers was a disappointment for me. The main character is so fucking annoying, and Paul Giamotti felt cliche as the grumpy schoolmaster
hits different if you went to boarding school in new england and stayed in the dorms over a christmas break
i'll tell the whole world i was already whoring at 15 and that he's got a big dick, that'll ruin him
