There's plenty of crime in rural areas. Buddy is a Sherriff for Oceola County (large rural area outside Orlando). He gets calls for a wide variety of crimes: Break in's are common in rural areas solely because they are so isolated, vehicle theft, domestic disputes, trespassing aren't unusual. Ironically to your claim, he finds that those who live in rural areas are far more paranoid than anyone in the city (he lives in Orlando city proper).

That is most certainly not true. My aunt lives in a tiny, more or less abandoned mill town in central Oregon on a 585 acre property (she married into it). I visit her 3 or 4 times a year and stay the day and overnightnight before heading back home in the morning. Each time I visit, she will often recieve 8 to 10 house calls each visit from neighbors, even those who live a few miles away. When we go to the little diner in town the morning I leave, everyone there knows her and over time have come to know me as well.

The difference between both there is the levels of socialization at play, in terms of paranoia. Suburb dwellers are conditioned to drown out the buzzing of everything around them while setting a lower bar for their community’s safety. There’s aren’t “no crime” rural areas like that person is implying, but it is certainly a higher level of trust in my small rural area than anything I ever experienced in the suburbs of Chicago. Where I live, you don’t have neighbors directly, you just see the same people at community events and at the Meijer two towns over. Community events that don’t happen in the suburbs because it doesn’t feel like a community.

I know we're getting down to personal experience and that can be a slippery slope. So while I do agree that in rural area's there is something of a higher level of trust in the community, that doesn't mean there aren't the same crimes and problems you'd find in the city.

This wasn't my experience growing up at least. I grew up outside Seattle in the suburbs and we had community fairs, parades festivals all throughout the year that were heavily attended. However, that was then. Now though? I don't live in Seattle anymore, so I don't know if there is still the same sense of civic pride. But I would wager to guess that there is not, especially as the city has become more political. Sure when I grew up there it was a Democratic run city , but they weren't absolutely out of their mind insane like they are now: They believed in God, family, strong community, etc. You could be a Republican in Seattle and express conservative views and no one would bat an eye or care. Doubt that's the case anymore. In fact I'm certain it isn't.
