I understand the point of “muh revenge is bad!!!”, but it’s not as interesting of a story as you think it to be, especially not when presented against the backdrop of zombies. It’s a video game. In the game despite her being flawed, is still easy to see why Ellie is well loved. It's no stretch that Dina is in love with her. And you can buy Ellie and Jesse being best friends. But the show makes you wonder why anyone is doing anything to help her. It even makes Joel come off kind of like a creep for saving her.

But the entire arc in the story is her need for vengeance, driven by her guilt over how she treated Joel and the time she lost with him she can now not get back, is turning her into a violent, hateful person, much as it did Abby, and her turning back from the brink at the end of the game allows her to save herself and forgive Joel, even if she already lost pretty much everything she at least has a sliver of hope for her own future. She IS "like them", she is exactly like Abby. It's Abby who grows less vengeful and isolated over the course of the game.

Video games are so far below films and literature in terms of storytelling that even a moderately decent if unoriginal "movie-like" game gets inordinate amounts of praise and propping up as a masterpiece. For me, the best video game stories are ones that could only happen in a video game, the ones just playing at being a movie don't impress me that much unless it's particularly well told, but even then I would rank them below ones that have a great story that could only be told through a video game.
