"I adore Frank Capra. He was and still is, in my opinion, the greatest filmmaker that ever lived.
Capra created a feeling of belief in a free country and that there is goodness in bad people; that everyone reaches a limit where they would stop and be sane again because what they really wanted was to have compassion for other people and live in a spirit of friendliness and brotherhood.
I don’t think his films were sentimental or romantic; they were expressions of a practical philosophy. Like him I believe that there cannot be artists who find no room for elemental human behavior and passion.
Idealism is not sentimental; it validates a hope for the future. Capra gave me hope and in turn I wish to extend a sense of hope to my audiences. By affording the spectators a glimpse into ideas that confuse, rock, and disturb them, I offer the mind food for thought.
An aesthetic experience that leaves the spectator vacant is no form of art. At the same time I don’t emulate Capra. The characters in my films display a lack of comfort and find themselves in petty and embarrassing situations, but this is only so because they haven’t yet come to grips with their emotional natures.
I am a tough and deeply cynical person. Capra didn’t care about his cynicism. I wish I could be as independent as him to really express the beautiful ideas he could without feeling perhaps that these ideas were not truthful.
If I had the capacity, the means, and the temperament, I would love to make every one of Capra’s films but so far I’ve never done it."

Its not about the number but the breadth and relevance of the films. I've only seen about 1000 but I basically never watched films or TV before I got into classics and arthouse.

desu I've only seen A Woman Under the Influence and Chinese Bookie. I thought both film were fine, but just kinda overrated. I guess it all comes down to taste, and the type of gritty realism of Cassavetes just isn't my thing. That's it.

I fell in love with John Cassavetes’ work when I saw the 1968 drama Faces in a film class a few years ago. I was excited to find this Criterion Collection set on Blu-Ray. There’s something satisfyingly tactile about physically owning a movie instead of just renting it on iTunes

And to press the point further: A filmmaker doesn't really need historical accuracy to be authentic. You could have the wackiest and most inaccurate western setting and portray an authentic psychological drama.
So Wes Anderson's flick was shown and is confirmed by reviews as mid, now why the fuck did Fremaux think it's a good idea to put it in Main Competition? At least Asteroid City was some full on meta thing that Wes Anderson hasn't really done before, The Phoenician Scheme is confirmed to be Grand Budapest 1.5. It should have been a Cannes Premiere or Out Of Competition if accepted at all to the festival.
But ideas of what constitutes cool are external, arbitrary and temporary

There's a myriad of minute factors contributing to the feeling of authenticity but the key aspects are the most elusive - earnestness and spontaneity, looseness and freedom.
He's ok. He has an entire panel, so not only his choice. Every year he puts slop but also interesting stuff in comp like Pacifiction. Other sections need some good stuff too.

I've been on the fence of watching Last and First Man for a while now because some people seem to hate it and some people seem to really love it, so I decided to watch Jóhann Jóhannsson's earlier short film End of Summer to see if I liked his style or not. after finishing it, I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I've read nothing about it, but my take is that Jóhannsson went to Antarctica, shot some footage, and then composed an album based on the footage he shot there. the main problem with this, is that both the images and the music just weren't all that interesting to me. the footage is just pretty bog standard Antarctica footage but shot on 8mm, and the music just didn't grab my attention. the music did seem to take some inspiration from the footage he shot, for instance one of the songs sounds almost like the sea flowing in and out, another sounds almost like a group of penguins, another sounds like the wind, etc., so that was pretty interesting, but I just don't think his music is my thing. has anyone seen this and Last and First Men? how do they compare?
