I think this has to do with the fall of "quippy" humor which was very millennial. People don't like MCU-esque Whedon-esque humor anymore. They don't want every line to have a sarcastic response afterwards anymore.

I rewatched ZSJL recently and that’s basically the exact vibe DC needs to aim for. A serious story with a hopeful undertone and very sparse well placed organic jokes that don’t feel the need be in every scene.

Maybe it's just not the right tone for a Superman movie? Just like a Batman movie full of quips won't work. The DC audience seems to be work better with a more serious tone, I think early on we got this divide, if you want comedy/action go to Marvel, if you want serious capeshit watch DC. Their comedy movies (Catwoman, Green Lantern, The Suicide Squad) failed miserable at the box office while serious shit like Joker, Nolan Trilogy, The Batman etc works much better.

It's just a theory tho, maybe people are just tired of action/comedy movies full of quips as a whole, movies work on trends and honestly I can't see what will be the next when capeshit dies.

DC has always been dark and serious. Just think about all the animated stuff, then the games, and finally live action movies themselves. The campiness and quip stuff is what led to Superman 3/4 and Batman & Robin. The idea that Superman is supposed to be utter campiness is very misplaced especially when the character acts like he has a dildo up his ass half the time. Gunn’s ironic style only works with ludicrous subgroups like the gotg and the suicide squad. Like you wouldn’t ever see Gunn direct the Avengers.

Literally been bitching about gunns humor since the beginning so this is good news to me. But the bad part is gunns awful humor is baked into his dialogue. It’s not really situational so just removing jokes might not help as much.

But that what a lot of people (me included) said when he was hired to be the head of the new DCU. Gunn can only make the same kind of movie over and over again, his Superman is full of B and C-list characters and tons of dumb jokes and obscure references just like GotG and TSS. You can't apply this formula for A-tier characters like Superman, Batman, etc. That's seems pretty obvious to everyone in the world except Warner's executives.

Just match the tone of the animated dc universe. That’s all you need to do. Everyone that worked on that show is still around but Gunn is too egotistical to let anyone else in because he thinks he knows best.

You are right and this can go for a lot of DC characters, they have this "bigger than life" feel that push them to be better than regular people. It was abysmal to watch Green Lantern making quips, specially Hal Jordan since he's basically Superman with a power ring.
