safe edgy ''big pharma bad'' that is completely toothless and portrays big pharma as a bunch of idiots caught up in a system that does evil things without a single real person being involved or responsible for it, the company itself is the entity that does the bad things and you can't blame any individual

main character goes to a woman to give her the shrooms and grow shrooms with her, so she tries to kill him and decides to hunt him down to get the shrooms....that he tried to give her for her to grow

the entire story only exists because the evil government can't just walk up to the guy and arrest him and confiscate the shrooms and grow them for themselves and decide the price and who uses them, no they have to destroy it and kill this guy in public

DUDE SHROOMS

I had a different experience while watching it. I think it's more of an exploration of how different characters perceive a singular McGuffin:

Marshall thinks the mushroom could be some miracle cure that should be given away for free to people who need it the most (from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs)

Rick sees it as a capitalist miracle product that can be used to create some hellish artificial seasoning that bypasses any sort of regulatory oversight due to technicalities and legal loopholes

Jonas sees it as a threat to the stability of the world, and envisions a future filled with cartels and extreme violence

Frances is somewhere in between Marshall & Rick in the sense that she wants to sell it, but only if it's done ethically and responsibly

Hildy is more interested in the mushroom's rarity and wants the world to know that she was the one who discovered it (more interested in fame than the mushroom's special properties)

It's a lot better than what you're suggesting. I initially found the art style off-putting, but the themes were interesting enough that I stuck with it. Overall, I would strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Utopia (2013) because it has the same kind of conspiratorial vibe.

Muh themes are so distracting to dumb people that they don't even notice that the morality in these shows is more simple and black and white than some old Disney story or Tolkien. They just replaces ''this guy is just pure evil'' with ''uhh...he isn't evil he is just rich!'' Money has become the new evil, and while evil villains of the past had complex motivations these new shows just have the bad guys with no subtlety just go around shooting people.

Old stories had themes too, but the characters had nuance and there was more to these stories.
This one has less nuance than stories where the evil government just wants to steal the tech/substance/alien to use it for war.

I tried to watch this. I gave it six episodes so far and I literally can't stand it. It so quintessentially.. Californian. The quirky woman-tier humor, the characters. Everything about it is just insufferable to me.

The criticism the show has on big pharma is that they will shoot people and kill anyone who comes up with a better drug than them.
The only other criticism is that drugs have side effects, but the side effects are clearly stated and the only shady thing done about side effects is that the drug company CEO tells them to speed up the disclaimer.
They are literally bad only because they kill people with guns.

A big thing about this shitty show that makes it hard to watch is that every single character without a single exception just does things on their own and there is no communication with other characters whatsoever. Every single character.
Not one sentence where another character is clued in on what is happening. All dialogue is just bullshit random shit where the character either acts quirky or tries to act quirky to not raise suspicion on what they are actually doing.
Every single problem in the show would be solved if two characters just spoke to eachother and told them what is happening and what they are doing.

Characters will travel the world hunting someone down or pull out a gun and kill someone before they go ''hey, what's going on?''
Entire storylines are just people not asking questions. The DEA agents could literally just ask Matthew what he is doing.
They have a warrant for his arrest and they can't just take him in for an interrogation.
