As a white kid who grew up in a working class neighborhood in Philly I have to say that Hey Arnold by far encapsulated the experience of growing up in a city better than any other cartoon I’ve ever seen. You really get a feeling of that crumbling dark dirty city life from it. I watched a couple episodes of “The Casagrandes” the other day and it took place in “a big city” and everything was clean and happy and all the people were safe, smiling, and fake. Hey Arnold understood that baseline rudeness of real people in the city and was especially great at capturing it. They accurately portrayed the type of “neighborhood characters” that really do exist in those neighborhoods. Like pigeon weirdos and rude stoop kids
