They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Edition

Question of the Day

What are your favorite instances of a director taking acting jobs (e.g. Sidney Lumet in various films) or an actor directing (e.g. Night of the Hunter)?

Cassavetes

/philm/ thought of the day —

Heaven and earth are heartless
Treating creatures like straw dogs
Heartless is the sage
Treating people like straw dogs
Between heaven and earth
How like bellows
Empty but inexhaustible
Each movement produces more
Talking only wastes it
Better to keep it inside

Note for westerners - straw dogs are the eastern equivalent of a Christmas tree so think of the poem in that context.
We bring it in, display it, dress it up, admire it. And then throw it away. Not because we dislike it or no longer like it but because that is only the natural progression of things.

Things rise, develop and reach their end. This is their order.

Woody Allen is probably the best director-actor, Charles Laughton is probably the best actor-director even though it was literally just one film.

Monteiro, Pialat, Gallo.

Lately watched Lux Æterna starring her. What an awful movie. Haven't been severely annoyed by a film like that for ages.

Despite loving a lot of Zappa's music, I have to reveal the fact that I'm more of a Beefheart enthusiast at the end of the day. I find him to be a more rewarding artist overall, despite his discography being (comparatively) way more compact. I even enjoy the sell-out "Tragic Band" records.

Same. I still am, but same.

Haven't been severely annoyed by a film like that for ages.

I presume you haven't seen Noe's Love?
Lux is definitely one of his weaker joints, but it stars Gainsbourg AND Dalle, so I'm contractually not allowed to criticize it too much.

Based, prefer Beefheart too.

NTA. Beefheart mogs pretty much every artist except maybe King Crimson.

so I'm contractually not allowed to criticize it too much.

But i can criticise flickering lights and annoying high sinus tones.

I fucking love Taylor Swift and slam death metal.

Despite loving a lot of Zappa's music, I have to reveal the fact that I'm more of a Beefheart enthusiast

Watermelon in Easter hay
Solo in What’s new in Baltimore
And solo in Yo Mama

I feel as though this puts Zappa a cut above the norm. These are all god tier.

I fucking love Joanna Newsom and Death Grips

There's a guy on Anon Babble who pretty much only listens to Carly Rae Jepsen, Taylor Swift and black metal, lol, cool guy, gave him some bm recs a few times.

Those three wouldn't even be in my top 5 Zappa, which is a testament to how many amazing solos the guy's recorded.

What solos do you think are better?

Inb4 Chungas revenge

I stay noided

Despite loving a lot of Zappa's music, I have to reveal the fact that I'm more of a Beefheart enthusiast at the end of the day.

I can respect that. I haven't heard Safe as Milk or Trout Mask Replica in a long time so I'll give them a relisten. If you had to choose, what are your top 3 Beefheart albums?

Reddit is that way --->

Yes, Taylor and slam are so Reddit. What do you listen to, anon?

Not him but Taylor Swift is reddit as fuck.

Saying something is Reddit is Reddit as fuck. I listen to whatever the fuck I want.

Pardon me, I was having a long conversation with somebody.

Introvert autistic yes. Borderline shy, I can throw myself into social interactions with strangers if it's necessary or if they seem receptive to interaction. I don't consider myself a loser, I don't measure my value by level of participation in normie rituals.

I do this and do look at the ground often. I would prefer a car that is actively trying to kill me (Dodge Viper) or any new Rolls-Royce. Can play a little electric guitar. More girlfriends but they've all been online. If e-sex counts it's closer to fourty hookups.

Well done *pat on the back*

Sorry anon e-sex doesn’t count or else we’re all in the hundreds here.

Out of Beefheart's catalog I like Mirror Man the most. That and TMR are the only records I've heard in their entirety. Ice Cream for Crow is pretty kewl 2, especially "Semi-Multicoloured Caucasian." I didn't expect a jolly piece like that from him, I liked it.
Guh sex would be awesomesauce, and I do have sex appeal (online)
The best place to find sex would probably be a bar, but the dealbreaker with that is having to interact with people who go to bars.
I've had real sexy time with just one person. It was a valuable experience because it gave me a frame of reference for beating off. I get more immersed and splurt harder when I know how the things happening on screen feel on the weeny.

Beefheart, Can, Crimson are my go-to trifecta when it comes to the late 60s/early 70s rock music. Magma, early Floyd, Sabbath, Robert Wyatt/Soft Machine, Zappa are the honorable mentions.

Don wasn't a guitarist, and his albums seldom featuring flashy soloing, but I find him to be a way better vocalist, with a more intuitive sense of melody and songwriting than Frank. The experimentalism in his music also wasn't a consequence of him attempting to be provocative or develop a hostile relationship with the audience, but just an extension of his own artistic sensibilities.

Those two records you cited, especially the mono version of Milk, are the obvious "classics" in his discography. For his more accessible side - which is still pretty 'gonzo' but fairly melodic and blues-oriented - I recommend Clear Spot (arguably his first attempt at making something commercial), and The Mirror Man Sessions, which consists of improvised jams recorded around the same time as SaM (not that this is a bad thing per se, but they might appeal to you due to featuring a considerable amount of instrumental noodling).

For his decidedly avant-garde material, his late period recordings, "Shiny Beast" and "Doc at the Radar Station", are both tremendous, and show him experimenting not just with composition, but with arrangements. They very much feel like proto-Tom Waits at points but better, no disrespect to Tom.

I also think it's cute that you have a set of specific reaction images featuring Harper. I unfortunately lack the patience to rewatch Gainsbourg's filmography and take screenshots, maybe I'm a bad waifuposter...

late 60s/early 70s rock music

How about Gentle Giant? I haven't listened to a lot of them, but I was amazed by their debut album.

Soft Machine

Allan Holdsworth's solo work has solidified him as my favorite guitarist.

Giallo gotta be the worst genre of all time. A billion movies and maybe a handful of them are good.

feature flashy soloing*
Bongo Fury being the exception, of course.

I didn't expect a jolly piece like that from him, I liked it.

Heh, he has a lot of jolly tunes.
youtu.be/Im9Y7o-0HjQ
This could almost pass for a Fleetwood Mac cut, save for his chronic smoker vocals.

Gentle Giant

Haven't listened to them enough, but they're very good. I appreciate the polyphonic medieval funk aesthetic they had going on in the mid 70s, with the "Power and the Glory" album. I also have to do a deep dive on Peter Hammill & Van der Graaf Generator at some point.

Allan Holdsworth's solo work has solidified him as my favorite guitarist.

Barring Eric Clapton, I presume, based on that picture and filename.

EPIC RAP BATTLES OF Anon Babble HISTORY
BOBBY BRESSON
VS
MICHAEL HANEKEEEE
BEGIN!

BRESSON:
I’m the Notorious B.O.B., drop silence like bombs,
While you out here with your cruelty and awkward-ass moms.
I birthed that cold frame, that deadpan gaze,
You just jacked my swag and added Austrian haze.
You make folks squirm—I make ‘em reflect,
You push buttons—I reject the effect.
You love pain, but I mastered restraint,
I paint with the quiet—boy, you just ain’t.

So sip your wine, read your script full of dread,
I did more with a door than you did with the dead.
You ain’t deep, you just grim with a glare—
I left marks with stillness... and you just stare.

HANEKE:
Oh word, Bresson? You want smoke with Haneke?
You walked so I could march—now get off my canopy.
You say I jacked style? Please, that’s tired,
You just filmed blank faces and called it inspired.
Yeah, you paved roads—but I built the maze,
Turned the volume down, then trapped ‘em for days.
You were stiff with the camera, stiff in your themes,
And by the end, bro, you looked like an unkempt grandma in jeans.

I peel skin with silence, you folded like cloth,
I give ‘em trauma—you gave 'em ennui and broth.
So respect the upgrade, I evolved the mode—
Now slide back quiet... like your dialogue code.

WHO WON?
WHO'S NEXT
(you) DECIDE!

I think Haneke moped the floor with Bobby B, sadly. These shitposts are kinda impressive, are they gen'd or OG written?

I like your style choletbro. I would talk to you (and harperbro) in private like I've done with some of our other nanocelebrities here. (RIP Kinskibro)
I didn't respect Clapton until I heard some Cream songs. I like his sounds, but he wouldn't be a first choice for a top blues guitarists list. He also uses curse words, and an artist should never do that.
