Who was in the wrong here?
Whiplash (2008)
Is this the thread?
Yes I love watching my movies with a piss yellow filter on them
why to everyone censors the words die and kill nowadays
Who remembers a drummer? Does anyone know Flea's real name without looking it up?
Is posting the wrong year a meme im not aware of?
acts smug and rude to people who care about him
wants people he'll never meet to remember him
acts smug and rude to people who care about him
It's reciprocal, you shithead.
Is the word "die" bannable?
for muh algomorithm. not on here but someone most likely saved this image from a different website where those words make your post less visible.
He was wrong for talking big before making it, because he would be neither famous nor rich.
I remember Neil Peart but he was also the soul behind Rush.
NPCs on other sites don't say "bad" words out of fear of the algo gods punishing them.
It's a sad state of affairs.
NEIL PERT... DO THE DRUM SOLO OF LIFE!
Flea plays bass.
99% of movies look like this nowadays. How the fuck could the family even see the food they were eating with it being that dark?
most bs edgy teenager take there is. I'd rather be fishing at 45
Movie is shit btw
I keep thinking this is the roller derby movie with the cute chick from Juno
This is what kids all say. Then they hit 34 and suddenly it doesn't seem such a cool idea.
I want to die at 90, with a funeral where children and grandchildren argue over who loved me most.
Name one Metallica? I'll start, Lars
You won't be remembered. You will never feel what he described. How the fuck do you know it's a bad idea?
Bass is just drums with strings
This guy party's hard!
I know my own mind
I don't want to be remembered as some drunken musician who killed himself before middle age
You won't be remembered
Who gives a fuck?
people with souls
This desu.
Why would i care what people think of me after im dead? or rather how would I be able to?
How up your own arse do you have to be to say you'd rather be dead than not be famous.
I remember Eric Carr.
Table
In metal, drummers are considered as important as guitarists. Any metalhead could easily name you a million drummers. Same goes for prog rock. I couldn't name any jazz drummers though
You know the whole story JK Simmons tells him is complete bullshit, right?
The entire point of the movie goes right down the drain because the teacher had a fetish for abusing children.
They were being rude and dismissive of his passion
More attentionfags
Sounds like deathcope to me. Both the person talked about and the one forgotten rot in the ground just the same and disappear. You don't continue to be alive because you're mentioned and to deny this denies one's mortality.
Now, if you want to go make something great, go ahead, but don't think it makes your death not a reality.
people are slowly waking up to the fact that this movie isnt an "overcome hardship" story and more of a "neurotic insecure tard fucking up his life due to being permanently unfullfilled" type of story
The actor and director say as much in interviews that Neiman will be dead in his 30's burning out.
That's the reddit take, what would you rather do? Live a cowardly and meek life or just go for it? Kys in the process yes or whatever but better than being a wageslave for sure
people are slowly waking up to the fact that this movie isnt an "overcome hardship" story
No one but the lowest Anon Babble autists thought this for one second you subhuman sperg.
BEING AN ALCOHOLIC THAT DAYS IN HIS 30S WILL MAKE ME CREATE LE MASTERPIECE THAT WILL BE REMEMBERED FOREVER
No. You don't need to "die at 30 homeless and a crackhead" to "go for it". In fact you'll probably just die a 30 year old alcoholic and still not have created anything of value or be remembered lmao
The sad thing is there are a lot of people who die drunk and broke at 34, and still nobody remembers them because they grossly overestimated their talent.
How about a long fulfilling life where I work to build wealth and security for the children I raise and the children they will raise?
no, not actually better. are you genuinely retarded or 12 years old?
in what world is being a drugged-out loser who ODs something to aspire you?
if being remembered is all you care about go write a cringe manifesto and shoot up a school in minecraft.
Mike B the Flea baby
he's a bassist though
John Bonham died of alcoholism at 32 and he's a legend now
totally bro I don't wanna repeatedly impregnate pic related for the rest of my life, what I want is faggot art students of the future knowing my name.
That was obvious from the outset, the movie even specifically makes it about something as niche as Jazz drumming to make a point about how autistically focused he is to the detriment of literally every other aspect of his life. At best, the audience sees Fletcher as the villain and enjoys seeing Neimann be the only person to defy him in any way, but the takeaway of "Wow he finally achieved his dream, he's so happy" shouldn't cross the mind of anyone with an ounce of critical thinking
I literally can't name or picture one drummer.
It’s not either, it’s just the reality that to be at all significant as an artist or to produce any actual art you have to sacrifice everything for it. Your art or whatever is just going to suck ass unless you autistically and passionately do it as much as you can whenever you can. You genuinely need to be an obsessive psycho freak with drive to make something worth being recognized. And this is true hence why this movie resonates
I always say this when this movie is brought up: I am truly, deeply envious of anyone with this kind of passion. I literally can’t remember caring deep,y about anything. The only thing I look forward to is my nap in my car after work.
The kid for being a faggot
It's not complete bullshit, but it wasn't as dramatic. Parker probably didn't give a shit about fucking up on a jam session, he was a drunk junkie
John Bonham rocks
because normies are limp-wristed overweight hormonal faggots and can't handle anything more vulgar than the average Bluey episode without going into a meltdown
I want to say the kid
I'm believe that anyone is allowed to choose how they want to live so if this guy wants to off himself at 30 that's absolutely fine by me. However, I'm also of the mind that strength overrules all and if he can't find a way to pursue his passions and have a fulfilling life then he is simply a weakling. The truly strong and find a way to have it all
So many crabs in a bucket.
No, they're getting older without achieving anything and need copes to feel better about themselves for always taking the path of least resistance.
Yup. This is a take you have in your teens simply because your 30's seem so far away that the statement means nothing, it means no more to you than dying at 50 or 70 or 110. When you are in your 30's and have known a few people that died in their 30's, it doesn't seem like that anymore, it seems like they didn't even get to live half of their intended life.
Legacy means nothing. We will all be forgotten.
But do what you need to keep going and hopefully be happy. If you have to be obsessed with legacy then go for it I guess, if you can just be chill, be rich, and live till your 90 then do that.
Portnoy, obviously
LP from Yellowcard
It's totally okay to harass your students if it means advancing black man jazz - the official music genre for the USofA.
Online derangement, a different flavor from what Anon Babble produces.
9/10 bait
being over 34 now yes he is wrong, there is too much life ahead of you to kill the rest of it just to be remembered, lot of names that are remembered now will be forgotten in a few generations, your lasting legacy also has and expiry date unless you are a hugely significant figure, drummers aren't remembered
I'm 40 and know someone who had a stroke at 35 with lots more people attending his funeral than I could ever imagine attending mine.He had a personality that left an impression on people but he was also so high on his own supply that he was constantly burning bridges because of his own ego and by the end needed one of his last remaining friends to pull some strings to get him a gig at a fucking travel agency.
I'm now married with a family and constantly experiencing things while what's left of him is sitting in an urn, forgotten except whenever a few people bring up what an asshole he was. Never crossed my mind to ever want to trade places with him.
If your motivation is to be remembered, then you're wrong from the get go. I've seen musicians and politicians parrot this a bunch of times: "I like it if people hate me or love me. But the worst is if people are indifferent to my existence. It means you're boring". Such a fucking shit take. It sounds like a cope for criticism.
Jesus hasn't been forgotten in over 2000 years. Neither has Caesar or Alexander the great for an even longer time.
"You're wrong!"
makes no counterargument
Lmao you're just coping with being boring
The counter-argument that it's just a cope disliked people use
Yeah, haha, I'd rather people despise me than not care about me.. Oh god imagine if people didn't care about me I need constant attention from other people I would hang myself like a tranny
The origins should be a passion. A spring or a well from which you draw. If you only want to create art because you want to be remembered, then your art in insincere. At least if you're a musician, rather than a politician. It depends whether you're creating a pyramid or creating a sculpture. Anyways, having people being indifferent to your existence isn't bad. Why would I want people to talk about me when I'm dead? Legacy? What they should talk about is the art you created. Does the creator matter, does it reshape the art when you know the artist?
nobody will talk about a modern jazz drummer
Because social media is all monetized these days and advertisers don't like their products being shown next to racy or objectionable content so the platform owners automatically scan text for nono words that are likely to upset advertisers and don't put ads around them. If they're not running ads the platform isn't making money so they also derank those posts in the display algo. Everyone wants to either be famous for fame's sake, or to leverage their own sponsorships and in either case getting deranked in recommendations is a death sentence for your profile. The only problem is most people are dumb and lazy and can't think of anything of value to post themselves so they just post about accessible salacious topics while masking the words that would get their posts flagged so they can have their cake and eat it too. The monetization of social media was a huge mistake.
I watched a channel yesterday at a friend's house. 'Dad Jokes'. The word 'die' was replaced with 'unalive'. I asked my friend if it was subtitled by AI or if they were taking the piss. 'Dicks' was subtitled as 'diggs'. And there were a bunch of other examples as well.
It's the wisdom a child comes up with. He's young and has no idea the true reality crashing and burning will have or feel like. They idolize self destructive people because they have no actual concept of the realities of it. It's hard to get young people to understand what they're saying is unrealistic and stupid because they literally cannot grasp it.
I think it's the opposite, desu, and I say this as somebody who used to agree with your take. If you're not able to be content within yourself, something's missing, and you're not gonna be able to fill that hole with achievements. It's good to have a passion, but you should take your fulfillment from the act of doing something and doing it well, not from the hope of using it to get some kind of validation from other people that you're not getting in your real relationships and everyday life
The present moment is all there is, and if the present moment fucking sucks, then you should fix that, rather than pouring everything into a future that may never come. That doesn't mean you have to give up whatever your dream is, but maybe change what it means to you
Then maybe it's your job to explain it to them in terms they can understand. If there is something wrong in the communication, the good news is: you can always adjust your own communication. Give them a smack.
In the context of the movie the kid is saying he'd trade 60 years of his life to be a great drummer which is borderline retarded.
exactly, who remembers drummers?
So you prefer longevity? Why not be a bright star? The trade off for burning bright is you have to give up longevity? Is that always so, you can't have one without giving up on the other?
people who care about music
A healthy society would beat the shit out of people who talk like this so they don't destroy their lives and everyone else's chasing a gay dream.
This is a false equivalence. There is no "trade longevity for greatness". You can be great and turn 80. You don't need to be a homeless alcoholic who dies at 30 to become a great drummer. In fact if you go down the path of self destruction the chances of you becoming great are lower than if you live a healthy life.
i too was 14 years old at one point
That's possible. For me, I think creativity and self destruction are closely related. Everyone's got one or two great stories to tell. After that, it's just refinement. Being around for longer provides new insights to yourself, but it doesn't necessarily provide for better communication. All great art is created by younger people. But I might be wrong on that, I'm open to suggestion.
What are you on about?
I didn't say or imply that there's a necessary tradeoff between success and longevity. The kid doesn't, either.
People definitely remember drummers. In fact everybody has their own favorite drummer just like they do with guitarists. Oddly nobody really has a favorite or knows bassists. But the real thing is that Whiplash it was jazz drumming, not rock. There's like a thousand jazz fans in the world and they're all weird fucks.
No one. If that's what he wants out of life, then preventing him from doing it would make him feel forever miserable. Even if it ultimately saved him from exactly the fate he laid out there and maybe even gave him a better life in the sense that society values, he'd constantly regret not taking that path because his mind is driven by that ambition and once people lose the thing that motivates them they start to resent life itself.
However, not everyone gives a shit about being famous, or not to the degree where they would trade a healthy long lifespan for a decade of lived fame and a legacy that will outlast it.
I personally think obsession with achieving "greatness" in the sense Miles is searching for is fucking retarded and myopic (Miles is seriously overplaying how much people give a shit about famous Jazz drummers). But that's okay, he'd think I'm retarded as well for how I live my life.
he doesn't know about Moon the Loon
he's an absolute legend who stood for the holy trinity of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll.
oh so noone who matters?
he'd trade 60 years of his life to be a great drummer which is borderline retarded.
The sentence implies that there is a tradeoff.
Cliff Burton.
I'd rather die on the streets for my corners
Da Vinci was 50 when he drew the Mona Lisa
no one talks about drummers lmao
I'll go for a beer run, but I'll dwell on that for a bit.
No, because the scenarios he's talking about are totally hypothetical. It's not a real trade even in the context of the scene. It's a comment on his values.
Why does this dude take it so seriously. Why not play video games and do normal things?
Ringo I had to look up if he actually was the drummer tho, desu.
Everyone becomes irrelevant and forgotten eventually. The earth is billions of years old and it's going to go on for billions of more. Even people like Hitler, Napoleon, and George Washington will be forgotten eventually.
The truth is there is no meaning to life and everything really is absolutely pointless but you should take comfort in that and just try to live as pleasurably as possible until your time runs out.

Noooo I need to be a hedonist at all times, living a long and fulfilling life is for sheep!
i accept your concession.
That's an exception, no? I'll say that tradesmen get better at their jobs with aging. But art that finds its way to a large audience is mostly made by young people. Then again, the good stand up comedians are probably already 40 when they break through. But they talk about their past experience. And they burn out after two shows, they don't have any more story to tell. The Mona Lisa is probably a good example, because it draws such a large audience and is world famous. But is that because the audience has learned about it? It doesn't really seem instinctive. 'Nevermind' from Nirvana also still draws a large audience. I think that's less artificial.
Who was in the wrong here?
You, for censoring the word "die" like a well trained dog.
I'd be sympathetic to his intention had he picked something that actually matters, jazz drumming is so culturally irrelevant and historically trivial it might as well be juggling knives or competitive chicken wing eating.
Robert Trujillo has been the bassist longer than Newstead and Burton combined
And how many children do you have? Why are you posting on Anon Babble instead of spending time with them?
nta, but dumb argument. You have to spend your downtime being creative? Everything you do has to be in the purpose of bettering yourself and everyone around you? Why aren't you learning how to play the piano, or going to the gym? Be a more productive citizen, faggot.
