There really were people who came to us with proposals of: ‘Okay, it's Half-Life 1, and there are horses, and it's a cavalry charge, and it's high-tech carbon armor on the horses,' and we were like, ‘What the fuck are you talking about? Have you even played this?'"
Gabe Newell refused Half-Life movie from Hollywood
creators should follow the source material closely
Toxic oldfag
Fuck off Anon Babbleermin
timetraveler bringing us the news from 2013
is it just expected that every adaptation is just a subversive and incredibly loose "re-imagining" now?
Only a Sith deals in absolutes
This is the mentality of a man who became a billionaire pretty much from nothing. He understands brand. He understands how easy it is to FUCK UP a brand.
Was the problem the lack of carbon hats on the horses?
I would guess (havent listened to the podcast cus the link is dead) that they were proposing some sort of nature vs technology angle that is not in the games and he shot it down. For example in the last star wars movie they did a cavalry charge on horses presumably for the same reason. But that has nothing to do with half life.
There is not following source material too closely and then there is a fucking horse cavalry in a half life movie you fucking fag.
That sounds based is he retarded?
and we were like, ‘What the fuck are you talking about? Have you even played this?'"
Based and boomer-pilled! Can't Jew-ell the Newell!
Make Half Life gay again
Hes turning into Moses too with that beard look
hi-tech carbon armored horses
gordon throwin quips non-stop
final boss is shadow gordon instead of alien fetus
the kino we missed.
For example in the last star wars movie they did a cavalry charge on horses
they fucking WHAT
yeah they actually did the cavalry charge on the hull of spaceship that was in combat in space. he really undersold it
It would be impossible for Hollywood to make a movie in which the protagonist literally never speaks, where are they gonna find an actor who would agree to a gig like that?
Just have him talk.
me. I would agee to that.
youtu.be
They’re not in space, they’re in the atmosphere of a planet, you have clouds around
Not everything needs to be ruined with adaptations into every single medium possible.
Would it, though?
Link will talk in the Zelda movie, Gordon can talks in a movie
Resonance Cascade occurs and Black Mesa begins to descend into hell
Gordon: "Well, THAT just happened!"
It's a movie they're discussing cringelord hall monitor
, calls someone "toxic"
Hello feminazi!
Gordon doesn't need to actually be a mute, that always felt like a quirk of the game. He shouldn't be played by someone like Chris Pratt and constantly quipping about all the dead people and aliens, but he could at least speak in full sentences to people. Just make him laconic so you still have an aspect of mystery around him
holy shit its even stupider than I imagined
Its kind of a defining feature of the games storytelling, if you took it out it wouldn't be half life
I saw a nice cage movie like that, some fnaf type horror. Was alright
this bait got too many replies

He is already outside with his agent sir!
It feels odd how much yet how little has changed in 12-ish years since the article.
Despite vidya massively outdoing hollywood in revenue and hollywood being in an undeniable slump and identity crisis, they're still massively snobby towards games.
Even now that there's a couple somewhat semi-competent series like fallout or arcane.
Probably because the same boomers who ran shit in 2013 run shit in 2025 and will not allow any new blood that's not directly related to them anywhere near LA until they die.
almost 20 years since HL2
Yes, he's extremely retarded. They made Alyx to undo the retarded writing and they still have no idea what to do with the story.
That film was so kino
Retard, do you think Gordon Freeman is a literal mute in-universe and no one comments on it or finds it weird? He’s obviously talking. His muteness as non-diagetic as the background music
Because most games turned into a movie have been failures. There’s little incentive. Additionally the gameplay, which is high on the core appeal, cannot translate to a movie experience so you have to rely on the story to do it for you, which is difficult because most games usually don’t have that great of a story that doesn’t involve tons of exposition so it would require tons of rewriting to make it work as a 90-120 minute feature. Plus most video game adaptations require high budgets.
Also the success of TV adaptations is a relatively new occurrence and development deals take years to complete so it’s a slow process and any potential flops in the genre disincentives moving forward with other adaptations.
Bhahaha.
SW is unsalvageable.
spend all of that time and money making TWO HL VR games
but can't spend time and money to make HL3
What did Mr. Gaben mean by this?
The made 1 HL VR game and 3 is in dev according to this Valve artist:
videogamer.com
and there are horses
he must have mistook it for source film maker
I thought they were making a second VR game. Anyway, why couldn't they put the time and effort into HL3 instead of retreading HL2 in VR?
When games and movies are so fundamentally different, I still don't understand why adaptations are such a big fucking deal everyone wants and everyone is asking for.
Maybe it's justified in fallout or arcane cause it's more stories from the setting people like, I guess, but It's especially pointless in games that are just movies by hacks who were bullied out of hollywood two decades ago and had to shamefully settle for making videogames like tlou. Just play the fucking game.
This shit is why i don't get the avatar live action series or whatever the fuck disney's doing. I dont wanna watch lilo and stitch with awkward acting and bad cgi. I want to watch the movie people with actual souls in their bodies made.
why couldn't they put the time and effort into HL3 instead of retreading HL2 in VR?
They are the only reason VR is still breathing. It was projected that by now 80% of gamers would count with a VR set in their home, we all know how it went
still breathing
Alyx was 5 years ago and it is pretty much the single big budget major studio vr title. I don't think there's ever been a single vr game, like, not even a tech demo or indie or a port in two or so years. It's as dead as the dreamcast.
A half-life movie would never work simply because the people who played those games are in their 40s and 50s now and have better shit to do with their time than watch a shitty movie about a game they half remember from 25 years ago.
it's already out, it's called The Eternaut
Welcome to Netflix, sir!
That's the pre-2016 days. Today they'd come with proposals to center the movie around Alyx with Gordon turned into the villain of his own story. For all the chest-beating about creativity and imagination Hollywood types like to do they're nothing if not predictable.
40s and 50s now and have better shit to do with their time
Millenials are the lamest generation ever to hit middle age cause half of them are embarrassingly living as if they're 23 years old, going clubbing and doing some non-job like fucking surfing instructor (male) or meme artist on instagram (female) while the ones that didn't have the generational wealth to pull it off work 70 hours a week for near minimum wage and are stuck on a necessity marriage with some slut who 'settled down'
Ai post.
It sounds kinda based but it's also not Half-Life at all lol
Based AI
it's Half-Life 1, and there are horses, and it's a cavalry charge
Didn’t one of the writers for HL make a fanfic killing off Gourmand Friedland or am I misremembering
