Why aren’t mecha popular in Western media?
Why aren’t mecha popular in Western media?
No idea, everyone thinks they’re cool but nobody really tried aside from Robot Jox (shitty title + low budget) and Pacific Rim (shitty title + came out at the wrong time).
How does one get into mecha anime/manga? I have only seen Evangelion.
the faggot from Sweet Tooth is doing the liveaction for Legendary Pictures.
Because white people understand physics. There is no way these 20 meter tall robots could punch someone or fight with laser swords without wrecking themselves.
My personal issue with mechas is that they’re completely impractical. The human form is not remotely optimal for combat.
because westerners preferred fantasy.
Japanese fantasy is cool too, but it is probably too proximate to their current culture ( we literally had to nuke their old culture out of them) so it doesn't feel as interesting
original gundam and original macross
Not even japs care about mecha anymore outside of the x generation age group.
Why aren’t mecha popular in Western media?
Because jap versions do not always translate well to normies and the people in charge are retards who do not instead adapt a western version of the genre.
Because it's dumb, retarded trash
There's no way they could even walk.
They would sink into any surface they stood on.
It's too authentic for the ironic minded west
I remember the same complaints from my friend when Pacific Rim came out. We grew up watching mecha anime, but he wouldn't accept a live action giant mech movie. I had received tickets for an advanced IMAX screening and he refused to come lol
You have to legitimately be autistic to enjoy real robots.
Super robot shows like Evangelion, Gurren Lagann and Code Geass were popular for a reason.
Gundam and Macross or whatever will always be niche because you have to be autistic to enjoy them
bested by superior technology
creates giant machine fantasies where they're fighting larger forces and winning
Jap mecha anime was power fantasy cope for their entire country ending up cucked by the Allies after WW2.
why are giant robots too unrealistic, westerners can suspend disbelief for all sorts of thimgs but draw the line at giant robots?
Japanese cultural autism combined with toy/model manufacturing industry. American business is mostly importer-resellers, with very few creators driven to pursue mecha gate-kept by a risk averse investment atmosphere. US distributors can just license pre-existing franchises that already have an ecosystem of products.
As an aspiring creator obsessed with mecha in the US my options are submit myself to the Disney slave pits or be an obscure indie operation. In Japan there is a pipeline that supports a large pool of indie creators like a minor leagues and a history of model/toy manufacturers willing to speculate on them as part of a lively national industry that exports most of the worlds related product. The closest thing the US has to that is the prolifetatiin of streaming shows, but that industdy operates as a Jewish money laundering scheme that farms subscriptions.
Mecha insists upon itself.
It will be soon

god i just know l the live action movie is gonna suck
Gundam is to soulfull and optimistic to be adapted into an mainstream hollywood movie
Even though the original trilogy got pretty dark at times it always had an hopefull undertone to it all
The oyw felt like just an temporay setback and soon humanity will ultimately progess into space and advance the human race and whatnot
Could anyone in hollywood really make an optimistic movie about future space travel?
there just gonna focus on the most supeficial stuff and make it dark and gritty to get teens into it

god i just know l the live action movie is gonna suck
They already had to fire the first director because he tried to big league Tomino, so that tells you how much respect for the series they're going into this production with
Yup, it counts.
I am stupid
what does “tried to big league” mean?
Ignored him and acted like he was too good to even pretend to listen to whatever he wanted to say, which got Tomino to shit on him in a nip interview.
Is Tomino still alive? Why is he even on the project?
live action gundam
Oh cool can't wait for the action, neat effects, and political intr
it's bankrolled by Legendary
Never mind
Is Tomino still alive?
Yes
Why is he even on the project?
He's not, but a Hollywood live action Gundam was something he was interested in and he wanted to talk to the director about it. And even if you weren't going to bother with a thing he said it's stupid to not at least go "haha alright very nice grandpa"
Delusional. The only interesting mecha has been armored core.
Code Geass
Appleseed
Big O
Gurren Lagann
Not mecha but the ships have grappling arms and fist fight so fuck it:
Outlaw Star
They aren't popular in the east either because all the tech otaku are old. All the popular mecha anime are popular because of everything surrounding the big robot and the storytelling it can enable and people have mostly realized you can do that same thing without 10 story tall robots just look at >geass
people watch this because of politics, hot bitches and lelouch's magic eye
appleseed

Because americans have to pay $200 tariffs when they try to buy a gundam toy.
So Batman beating Superman, Flash or any other high tier is fine but a giant robot is what breaks you?
Clearly you're wrong. On multiple fronts.
Pacific Rim was going to start it. But then Pacific rim 2 happened.
what
there are plenty of hobby shops in the states that are selling imported gunpla for cheap besides the obviously more expensive ones
