it’s not an import tax, the GST is a sales tax that applies to all goods regardless of origin, even domestic ones. I think food is exempt. We probably do also have some tariffs but they aren’t universal and are deicided on country by country and per product basis.

There is no manufacturing base in the US, there's a reason everyone goes to China for this, they have a shitload of expertise that barely exists here. It could be built but there's going to be something like a decade or more down time where nothing will happen and the economy will be boned because we are cut off from Chinese manufacturing.

This would be mildly intelligent if the administration were slowly weaning the country off China with predictably escalating long term tariffs (or other mechanisms) while simultaneously investing to build domestic manufacturing expertise and facilities, but Trump is at best a retard and at worst a foreign asset deliberately sabotaging the US, so all that's happening is shock therapy tariffs that are going to demolish the economic health of the country while driving China to just export elsewhere while ALSO alienating the entire world which will make it easier for China to adjust and less likely that other countries will co-operate with anything we want to do.
