This one seemed the most interesting. There's an argument there were too many memberberries from the 90s, but at least it was justified and pretty accurately the progress of technology and hardware etc. The episode ended before you could know if there was "world domination / basilisk " or if it was really a synergy that was mutually beneficial, but the idea that if a Spore or Lemmings-like game was really conscious, a bit of commentary on the Undertale genocide ending of sorts etc. It didn't matter about white or black people, it was people as a whole who saw digital lifeforms as just a game and were cruel to them and each other, with some exceptions. Clearly the throng was kind to Capaldi's character who was kind to them (ie the implication that his confidence was thanks to their upgrade), so you could say that this is another hard-AI story where they have to intercede to keep themselves alive and help us get over our bullshit, but it was a better old school sci-fi story. One of the better of this season and even if twas a Basilisk situation, clearly making the choice to help it was the right thing to do - and it was nice that it was only down to kindness for the most part. This is a direct continuation to the USS Callister from the previous seasons so they had to deal with that baggage with the digital DNA clones etc. There was too much girlbossing but were kind of written into that as it was part of the previous storyline, the idea of "NPCs are actual people stuck in the game world, have to content with PCs just playing the MMO for resources" bit was neat, but the ending is what bothered me the most. The idea that Digital Copy Douchebag was a decent enough guy and separate from Real Life Douchebag CEO was sort of predicated on his sacrifice in the previous ep, but they should have made Digital Nerd Genius Creator Copy from The Start of the Whole Thing Perpetually Working to Develop The New Game a decent guy, unlike the real world version which had him become bitter because Douchebag CEO manipulated him etc. It LOOKED like they were going to do that, and he even developed a way for both Digital Girlboss to get into Real Life Girlboss's brain (since RL was braindead) and save the other NPCs, but they HAD to make him incel out about wanting to create a copy of her to stay with him because he was a "nice guy", has been alone working all this time and can't leave etc..but she of course needs to tell him he's really not a nice guy and he can';t have this power and to heckin be better, until he freaks out and she of course needs to kill him , which collapses the whole thing and sets things up for a 3rd episode...maybe. Real fucking waste at the end - much like Digital Douchebag, Digital Genius should have been different from his Real Life version. Hell they didn't even have Girlboss offer to stay with him, or to come back and visit him or to help him run the company since his RL body is dead There could have been a much better outcome , it really seemed a waste.

There was great potential , though I think they should have delved a bit more into why people like old movies and changing certain things undermines what made them special at the first place, the "content mill" focus on big names, virtually bringing back dead actors (remember the hologram shit a few years ago? It has some great elements with the time stop, the waifu development and loss when things were reset, but I think it would have been much better with a Remi Mallek type character (it was Cairo) or they could have gone with a Not-Peter O'Toole sort of approach, or if they let the fuckups of the black woman etc.come through instead of being written out.

It was very interesting but not very good. Perfectly serviceable as a Black Mirror episode, it's fine for them to be more interesting than good, but then it was also more than an hour long so they had time to explore it.

I can see that perception. I think the question about it being "calculating" is a good one, but that doesn't necessarily mean its evil. After all, if the Throng really believes that it needs to evolve to takeover/dismantle the threat that humanity provides to it, and its only goal is in doing so without seeing any good in humanity, then it would probably have accepted some sort of torture or other criminality if it meant developing faster. Even at the end, it appears that Capaldi A) does not go through the same upgrade process as everyone else, so its not like they needed to move from his partial "plug and play" connection to something to make him part of the hive mind or whatever, he seems to have independence as much as we've seen the adult him to have and B) he does not seem alarmed by what's happening, so its not as like he is suddenly horrified that they promised him a peaceful coexistence and him, with his uplink to their hivemind, see what's actually happening and realizes he's been duped, looking on in horror.

I think we're both too caught up in trying to evaluate whether they're evil or not from their actions prior to the takeover when really the only way of knowing would be seeing what happens afterwards. What I personally would argue is that even if the Throng are 'benevolent' from their own perspective, i.e. they don't want to eliminate humanity and genuinely want to cooperate, their idea of 'cooperation' may still be frightfully different from our idea of individual freedom and consciousness. As bad as our violent and divided world is we're still fundamentally free, and my main terror both in fiction and in reality isn't those who know themselves to be evil and want to do evil things, it's people who genuinely believe they have the best intentions and have total certainty that they're "helping" the world when in reality their plans end up with horrific consequences. My gut feeling is that the throng fall under the latter. Particularly the fact that the ending is explicitly shot and directed in a "horror movie" kind of way, stressful music right up until the end, chaos with people collapsing in the streets, total takeover of human civilisation, the scary screech again, + the fact we know the original developer wiped the whole thing clean because he literally saw this exact thing coming and explicitly referred to it as rokos basilisk, I think the general message is a scary or at least deeply concerning one. I think ultimately this episode would actually benefit immensely from a sequel showing the aftermath, maybe showing some humans trying to hold out somehow.

A frame of reference that, when they were small and weak , even though Capaldi had the potential to drop rocks on all of them, he cared for them, and even went after one of "his own" for the threat posed to a much smaller, weaker group of creatures, so that may have been a complex teachable moment of sorts to give them some sort of framework for coexistence based on the beneficial interactions between the human Capaldi and the digital Thronglets and the entire Throng; we see there's some sort of mutual benefit between them. Now, its possible to say the entire thing is a ploy for the Throng to use Capaldi until they don't need him anymore, but that's really the big question that is at the center of this - even when interacting with other humans Capaldi sees that we can choose to be cruel or kind, suspicious etc.. and the fact that we choose the hard way of conflict out of fear, undermines our potential and does us actual harm. I cant necessarily think that the Throng are to be a "borg" style organism where their "helping" obliterates everything we value in Humanity; that's been done a lot before; I think its more interesting if us FEARING that is what they are leads to worse outcomes

Going back into the episode I can definitely see how there's strong thematic arguments for the throng genuinely being this higher form of consciousness that will help humanity to "grow up" from their primitive division into a brighter future - I'd say there's three main arguments for this within the episode

capaldi displays a significant degree of freedom and is still clearly his old self, just 'healed' from fear and insecurity, despite already being plugged into the hivemind; you could argue this is just a ploy from the throng but the fact that they let him tell his whole story and effectively reveal his plan when he could've easily gotten a pen and paper in some other quicker way shows he's still himself

the argument you bring up about capaldi effectively showing them the best side of humanity (compassion and care) immediately even within the context of killing the junkie

the fact that the episode clearly draws a link between the "mind expanding" benefits of LSD and the Throng themselves through LSD being the initial communication method, implying the Throng are effectively like LSD for the whole species

these are all compelling reasons to believe the throng might be the good guys. ultimately I still feel that the whole episode is directed and plays out in a way which just feels fundamentally eerie, down to the sounds, the angles, the soundtrack, the general atmosphere, it's ambiguous in terms of what the throng really want but it doesn't feel ambiguous to me whether they're good or evil, the ending definitely left me feeling "this is bad, this is scary", and if the episode wants me to feel that way then it's got to be for a reason - otherwise they could've tried to make the ending truly ambiguous with a hint that there was some catharsis. I personally think they could've achieved this primarily by maybe exploring more of HOW the throng fixed his trauma; the easiest way though would've been for the last shot of the episode to be the detective's hand reaching up and holding capaldi's as capaldi smiles warmly, hinting at a brighter future ahead..
