But the birth of Youtube kind of marks the end of that tradition of just making things and putting them on the internet for free, or even paying your own money to do so. Artists and Webmasters were the last gasp of that culture as far as I saw. People were just putting their stuff up on the internet or paying their own money for webhosting for a surprising amount of time.
