I have switched careers a few times now, and I am currently in an office environment where people complain about how cold the AC is and how low-quality the cafeteria food is. The coworkers I get along with the best used to work in construction and auto repair, and these guys equally appreciate how nice it is to not sweat your ass off from dawn the dusk and have access to complementary food whenever they want.

At least most of the work isn't, it depends specifically what you're doing and who you're working for. The thing about construction is that the majority of people are unreliable fuckups and tweakers, so if you're the kind of person who just shows up and does your job and doesn't cause problems, you'll get promoted very fast.

I went from digging ditches and schlepping debris to managing job sites within 4 years. Once you're that guy, you honestly don't even have to get out of your truck.

I've worked construction and I've had 9-5 office jobs. There's a sense of reward and accomplishment from construction that you don't don't get with office jobs. You can visibly see the result of your efforts in construction. You will also sleep like a baby after a days physical work, I never found this true of office work. For some people those two things are enough for them to choose construction work. Of course it's nice to sit on a comfy chair in an air conditioned office as opposed to being exposed to the elements.

That job does wear down the body after a few years, which is why my office job has been much better for me, but office jobs turn into all encompassing slavery where they expect you to work 50 plus hours a week, and want you to log in remotely when you are at home, and answer e-mails at all hours of the day. So each job has it's pluses and minuses, but physical jobs really become impossible after your 40's unless you stay in really great shape.

True, that's why you need to make a point to go to the gym a few days a week or you'll end up as a soft pile of crap office worker.Still it's better than going to a physical job that works you to near death to the point you have to take painkillers every day just to make it through your shift. I saw some guys in their 50's the other day climbing ladders to do roof work on a house next to a Wendy's. They looked like they were one step away from dropping dead from exhaustion. It's not really a job I can "quiet quit" because 80% of the job is proactive consultation. I'd basically be fired pretty quick. Being pushing 40 w/o insurance and not having a stable job in this current political and economical is a dangerous gamble.

Compared to driving around with the broworker in the company truck for 4-6 hours of the 10 hour shift making fun of all the daywalkers we see in the streets and taking a dozen breaks at whatever gas station we feel like. This was one of the few ups of my last job, as long as you didn't get paired up with the yapper or the boomer who would chainsmoke with the windows rolled up

Working outside with your bros on a nice day kicks ass. Working with a shit crew in sleet and wind is misery. If you ever end up with an office job watch the little sissies whine about the thermostat.

Working with a lot of women in the office is like being back in high school. That's the level of their behaviour. They are women first and employee second in the sense that only rules of conduct they feel like following will be followed.
