It's not a coincidence a shitload of production has left Hollywood. Did the studio tours when I was in LA and it was notable just how few of their sets and soundstages were getting used. They're getting all their money from very long running shows that basically take up residence in a small number of sets whereas before you constantly had loads of productions fighting over use of the sets.

From what I understand episodic writing is harder to do in the timespan given to writers who have to come up with ideas. Also book writers have editors who may or may not suggest changes that help the book whereas script writers do not.
