AI won
AI won
All told, there were 1,819 television writing jobs last season, a 42 percent decline from the 2022-23 season. Last season’s numbers are far fewer than even the COVID season of 2019-20, which employed 2,722 writers.
Cord-cutters and corporate greed are to blame, the WGA says.
“With an industry in transition — cable TV subscriptions and cable programming declining, a massive run-up and then pullback in streaming series as Wall Street demands quicker streaming platform profits— the number of TV jobs has declined,” the WGA’s latest jobs report reads.

TV sucks now, ChatGPT could probably write better stories

they should strike for more jobs in 2026

The 'deal' they signed ending the writer's strike was always going to result in this.
It made large writing teams stupidly expensive and incentivised studios getting around this but hiring a "team" of of high profile writers who were exempt from the minimum room sizes. Increasing residuals just meant a select few got massive pay increases and it discouraged risk taking with unestablished writers.
I remember after the deal was signed and you had all these places talking about how the writers "got everything they wanted", ignoring loopholes large enough to drive a bus through.
Yes, I felt their strike deal was self-defeating. Min writing teams was entirely designed to sneak in as many useless idiot writers as possible, the fattest, blackest, most useless braindead useless eaters you can imagine. They actively wanted writing to get worse, not better, while maximizing their own.
Why not push for more spec scripts? Oh that takes talent. They were hoping to just coast on cable and streaming forever with easy jobs. The lack of spec scripts has pretty much doomed hollywood. Something like a minimum amount of spec scripts a year might save it.
It sounds like it didn't fix any underlying problem, and if anything utterly accelerated them. Is Hollywood doomed? Why can Hollywood and tv look at this and say it's okay? Are they seriously thinking of coasting on the same IPs from the 70's to 00's forever in sequel-reboot-prequel franchise shit where writers are just fill in the blank types rather than creatives?
You need stories and characters and IPs. They have to come from somewhere and it's not magic. They should be using their $$$ to fund the new generation and a back to basics approach. It seems everything from the university education to the corporations are fundamentally broken and flawed and seem to actively want to create the worst shit possible that's doomed to failure.
They're mostly anti-white.
The thing is, they did these stupid minimum writing room sizes (shades of the jobs banks that ruined the US auto industry) and then agreed to a condition where the minimum room size doesn't apply if you hire an established writing pair.
"I can hire a experience writers who know how to play ball and who'll only hire 2-3 writers or I can take a risk with nobodies and have to fill a room with 10 writers, diluting any artistic vision a show may have and adding an extra 5-6 people to get paid royalties"
Voice actors' union is now making batshit requirements too. Basically, if you hire any union actors, your whole production must now only be union actors. It fucks over non-American voice actors hard. These conditions are illegal in the UK (and I imagine a bunch of other countries) so they now couldn't work on Union shows even if they wanted to as it would block their ability to work in their home country.
Luckily a load of games aren't giving into that shit (most notably MiHoyo).
People who are pro-AI are anti-humanity
Based retard getting upset at the genie for being out of the bottle instead of making wishes
Thanks to residuals and sky high fees, there's no incentive to take a risk with new concepts with untested writers.
adapt or die.
People were saying the same about computers, steam engines and written words. Neo-luddites are just old men shouting at clouds.
make it massively more expensive to hire people
fewer people get hired
why can't they understand how this seesaw works
Do you have some kind of intellectual disability?
Nobody here is talking about "neo-luddites" or about "old men" and they have nothing to do with this argument - get a grip.
Humans have consistently proven themselves to be awful
MORE Hollywood writers should be losing their jobs.
There's always novels. There's a LOT of stories out there. Barely scratched the surface in a lot of genres.
I tried to have AI LLMs analyze my screenplay but they could only read it partially and gave me an erroneous analysis.
You lost.
Maybe you're not communicating effectively
They have EVERYTHING to do with this argument and you are being intellectually dishonest.
Why should I care about the people that call me an incel chud and say I don't matter to society anyway? Remind me how those people being rendered redundant to that same society is supposed to be anything other than a win for me?
With an industry in transition
lol the industry has been transitioning for 15 years now for Christ's sake
They seriously thinking of coasting on the same IPs from the 70's to 00's
Yes, and don't tell me this list doesn't get you depression

calm down pradeep, no one with a real education gives two fucks about muh AI. that's why it's only a big deal in your shithole country
Maybe you should use some AI because you are flatline braindead retard.
Where did all the money for writers go
Oh
There seems to be a limit on how much of a long PDF that LLMs like Gemini can parse.
That bitch has always been ugly but god damn she looks terrible in that picture
AI may have won, but the audiences will keep losing. Just because incompetent retards and demented social activists are losing their cushy jobs doesn't mean writing quality will increase. Corpos have merely calculated that they can keep shitting out the same propaganda slop at a fraction of the cost.
Thanks to residuals and sky high fees, there's no incentive to take a risk with new concepts with untested writers.
Correct, that's just a recipe for Hollywood to continue it's now 15 year death cycle. Korea, China, and the rest of the world is gonna eat our skins.
Guess what? What's stopping Korea from just hiring a bunch of Americans and calling it an American production? Would anyone stop and even notice Soeul isn't an American city? That's the end-game I think. They just make their own productions with outsiders for whatever market they're going for in that language. You can't produce fuck-all in Hollywood anymore that isn't just Algo driven streaming slop that no one watches, or Franchise remix shit.
Fiction isn't copper or gold. you can't take no risks and get a steady suppy you need to change and innovate. hollywood is growing incredibly stagnant and pretty soon it's gonna be DEAD.
no one with a real education gives two fucks about muh AI
Then why are you communist trannies literally crying about it 24/7?
good, pedowood btfo
The 'deal' they signed ending the writer's strike was always going to result in this.
Anon Babble knew long ago that more writers and higher salaries would = less films/shows being made. The writer's guild are the stupidest fucks on the planet earth.
The streaming services are shitting out more series than ever, they just all suck.
You sure about that?
It's not a coincidence a shitload of production has left Hollywood. Did the studio tours when I was in LA and it was notable just how few of their sets and soundstages were getting used. They're getting all their money from very long running shows that basically take up residence in a small number of sets whereas before you constantly had loads of productions fighting over use of the sets.
pro end-times
Korea, China, and the rest of the world is gonna eat our skins.
That's already happening in the gaming sector. More difficult to pull off in tv & film i imagine.
I tried to give that Paramount Plus Dennis Quaid serial killer show a chance, and it was like a lifetime movie where they say fuck. Shit's embarrassing, the whole town needs to be reset.
oh no
anyway...
I'm anti-AI but I'm anti-"contemporary Hollywood writers" even more. They deserve to be replaced.
The writing in Bongland has also taken a nosedive so it can't just be Hollywood union busting politics. There is an additional cultural problem at work, mainly homosexuals and Jews refusing to hire anyone who isn't a pants on head tranny. Social media probably ruined Hollywood writing more than post strike incentives.
It's so weird that we're in an apparant cultura, political, social, and entertainment, doom spiral and many either can't see it, and no one can do anything about it. It's plain as day that Hollywood is on life support and only has years left before they pull the plug. Mega-corps are richer than ever, and you'd THINK that this would mean these resources could be used for long term planning and reform? Nope. they're either doing nothing or contributing to doom spiral with short term thinking. Writers? More short term thinking.
Holy fuck why is this so impossible to fix? Just make something watchable. You guys were doing it for like 100 years! The idea that you make stories that are entertaining and that there's an audience which is your costomers is just so wild and out there right now.
This. Whenever I see a garbage show I look at the list of writers and immediately know why it's so bad.
It's impossible to fix because it's illegal to tell faggots, women, and shitskins that they suck.
Ever notice how there's two very distinct types of people on Anon Babble these days, there's people who are mature, often 30+ or 40+, been coming here a long time and it's just a habit they can't really go, have good insights, intelligent, likely lead a successful and full life - and there's these fucking fucks, that come in with like teenage Anon Babble style trolling and memes and nonsense, it's like Pinky and the Brain, except with Pinky being an unlikeable piece of shit. Really there should be a sitcom about it.
I mean has there even been any must watch shows in the past 15 years? Maybe breaking bad but GoT fell off hard, west world was dog shit, no sitcoms anyone even remembers like they do with shit in the 90s or early 2000s
Fuck the writers, let AI try and maybe we'll get something finally memorable
Did we get too soft? I know East-Asia has this very sink or swim mindset. You either sell or you don't and you don't get a second chance. They often over-do it and it's very high pressure and SK especially has a lot of media suicides.
But they also get results. Every god damn bitch I talk to, whether it's here or half-way across the world loves KDramas. No one really careas about American productions anymore post-COVID. It's like the entire industry just shrunk away into nothing.
gotta remember half the people coming here are retards and indians, the fact that they can even use an electronic device at all is a large feat for them
there should be a sitcom about it.
Sorry, no writers left
If i wanted to see 40 IQ morons id take a trip down to walmart
I would say Mad Men and ZeroZeroZero. Yellowstone had a huge impact too, but it changed too much after season 2. Modern Family was comfygood.
Key thing to remember is that AI fundamentally CNANOt write. It's remixing and predicting based on past works - which means everything will seem familliar.
Sitcoms
That's the wildest shit. Why doesn't Steraming have a late nite show and sitcom? Shit like Hot Ones is the closet thing we got. Why is this so impossible today? These were budget productions with a lot of the money going to writers and actors not the production itself. They would spam enough of these until one of them stuck.
This is all some lost art. Writers today seem to just wan to suckle on the teet of big corporations and that's it. Act like parasites, absorb resources, move on. They somehow THINK that their lack of giving a shit will never have consequences. Well they're not being hired, and no one likes anything.
And at the top: no spec scripts. No new ideas. No adaptions. recycling forever. No long series on streaming more than a season so no one gets attached to anything.
Everything is shit; forever.
Asian media like manga and KDrama is still built on a meritocracy. They don’t have diversity quotas like the West. They also don’t view the world through a lens of oppressor versus oppressed.
I know, and they often go too hard in the other direction (the frequent SK suicides aren't for nothing). Isn't there some balance we can hit? It feels like corporate america totally threw away meritocracy.
I'm not the anon you're replying, but I believe Hollywood is suffering from the same problem media in my country is suffering.
Here it's a closed system receiving money from the government, so there is no reason to make anything good because you're getting paid anyway and you can't make anything good because you need the government to approve your script to get paid. The result is something that doesn't need to entertain because no one cares and that can't say much because you need to make some government official happy.
From an outsider, it looks its the free Blackrock money going into tech(streaming)/Hollywood pushing for stuff no one gives a shit.
There's like 3 shows a year I will watch, and three or four movies. It's not nothing I guess. But I finally gave up on the theater experience. It's so shit to go to pay a lot of dollars and sit in uncomfortable seats and watch 40 minutes of pre show ads. It's something I wouldn't do with lottery money. My iptv is too damn good
Sitcoms died because you can’t make fun of anybody anymore. Zoomers watch Friends and screech about sexism and homophobia. Also the streaming model punishes status quo by forcing the plot constantly forward so every episode ends on a forced cliffhanger.
Jumanji 4
There was a third Jumanji?
I enjoyed reacher and terminal list enough. Now enjoying mobland and will give murderbot a watch though hopes are low. Also will watch terminal list season 2.
For movies I will watch mi-9. And a couple others, I forget which they are now. But at home.
Star Wars Mando (2026)
Absolutely not happening.
People who are pro-AI are anti-humanity
Or they are just Indian.

Twitter screeching isn't real for a few major reasons:
1. They're almost nobody, like 1% of 1% of 1% of 1%. You can trend on twitter with 30K interactions, and that's nothing in the world.
2. It's extremely performative. They need something to complain about and act self-righteousness 24/7 and just pick up causes and events willy-nilly.
3. It's driven by algos
NONE OF IT IS REAL. You can make a lot of shit.
Also the streaming model punishes status quo by forcing the plot constantly forward so every episode ends on a forced cliffhanger.
I get trying to maximize it, but again, old sitcoms do well on streaming. Why not just make new ones? I swear to god, if hte writing was good enough, you could film some theater production that was just an empty stage and some furnature with nothing else and people would watch it.
It's definitely that these corporations got too big so everyone just treats it as a 9-5 job with no passion, and they look for ways to mooch and gimp the system to take advantage of it. It's almost like USSR communist systems in a way - no competition, just drag your feet and see what you can steal without getting into trouble.
They don't commit crimes but they bloat up budges - hire your friends, get the most extensive and expensive catering possible, etc. Not a single care about the end-product so you just go through the motions.
Corps got too big and need to be split up.
West World would have worked if they had stuck to 2 seasons. They tried to stretch it out and have to robuts try to take over earth, when 100% of what people liked was the park itself, not the characters or whatever.
LMAO @ Korea having meritocracy. I can smell the kimchi from here.
Based Al
I swear to god, if hte writing was good enough, you could film some theater production that was just an empty stage and some furnature with nothing else and people would watch it.
That's 90% of classic Star Trek episodes. The writers were able to spin up classic stories under the strictest budget and time constraints. Now studios take the opposite approach by throwing money and time at projects. They think they can buy quality.
They don't commit crimes but they bloat up budges - hire your friends, get the most extensive and expensive catering possible, etc.
Ben Stiller brags that he can get Apple to fork over $20 million per episode of Severance because of his lifelong industry connections. $20 million could fund an entire season of a show from the 2000s.
i agree
and humanity is shit
hence my opinion on ai
I can't speak for their movies and TV shows, but there is meritocracy in manhwas, same as in Japanese mangas.
Successful and popular webnovels get adapted into manhwas. Successful and popular manhwas get adapted into animated series.
In America if you have a successful novel it rarely gets adapted into anything and even when it does, it gets completely butchered by a bunch of people that never even read the source material. Most recent example: Wheel of Time series.
The lack of spec scripts has pretty much doomed hollywood.
there are spec scripts, just no good ones, because everyone is addicted to social media and video games and creativity is too low-dopamine to compete.
push for more spec scripts
this sentence means nothing.
$20 million could fund an entire season of a show from the 2000s.
what is inflation
also even accounting for inflation we're not exactly talking about premium TV for $20 million. The Sopranos cost $7 million per episode by the end, and that's a show set in the real world with minimal production costs.

He says everyone in the Soviet Union knew the system was failing, but no one could imagine any alternative to the status quo, and politicians and citizens alike were resigned to maintaining the pretense of a functioning society.[5] Over time, the mass delusion became a self-fulfilling prophecy, with everyone accepting it as the new norm rather than pretend, an effect Yurchak termed hypernormalisation.
Some of the butchery is because the original author is dead and/or the people who control the IP either care about nothing but money or are corrupted. I don't know why Christopher Tolkien signed off on Shadows of Mordor but he died in 2020 and big surprise that trash like Rings of Power comes out after he's dead.
What's stopping Korea from just hiring a bunch of Americans and calling it an American production?
Doesn't China have a back lot with American looking cities? Seems like the logical thing to do, similar to what WB has done with their lots.
is there an actual reason we ever got up to a whole room of people writing for one project? what's the advantage other than (potential) higher volume of output? is the volume so critical that it's worth sacrificing the art? we don't expect 12 authors on a novel. we don't expect 12 painters on a painting. how can we expect art by committee to be good? why is it this way in screenwriting? asking earnestly, and would like details even if the shorthand answer is jews or women or something.
From what I understand episodic writing is harder to do in the timespan given to writers who have to come up with ideas. Also book writers have editors who may or may not suggest changes that help the book whereas script writers do not.
