Refn signs on to make The Avenging Silence (James Bond x Only God Forgives)

amazon decide they want more original content

between The Neon Demon's Cannes' premiere and high viewrate compared to its budget, and Refn's beloved status due to Drive, amazon decide that he's the sort of crazy auteur who can provide them with original kino

throw a truckload of money at him to walk away from TAS even though preproduction was already basically complete

Refn agrees and writes a series of tangentially connected crime films set in LA

he continues to keep writing and tweaking with these scripts up until the shoot date

amazon don't care because they trust him

Refn's films tend to be very bleak and hopeless. It's funny how people latched onto Drive and never bring up his other projects at all.

It ends the exact way it was supposed to. The only "ending" it could have would be John Hawks' murdering Jesus and all of his henchmen instead of the pedos but that would defeat the point.
For what it's worth, The Avenging Silence is finally back in preproduction. The Hollywood Reporter even claim that he secretly filmed the entire thing at the end of last year (seems unlikely but that is when filming was supposed to start and there's been no update since). So hopefully we'll get that at Cannes next year
