Ahh, honestly, there's not a lot of particularly interesting stories. Like I said, the cast tried their best to endure the miserable shoot by trying to have a good time off set, so there were a lot of parties and nightlife, but nothing really out of norm. Everyone was glad when the shoot was over, but from what I've seen, some very, very solid friendships emerged from it.

The moment to moment stuff was good but overall it didn't do as much for me, I'm not quite sure why. The plotlines and how they overlapped were definitely weaker, but there was also more and more interesting character development across the week than the first two seasons so I don't know. It's a mixed bag.

you're right about the Thailand being a weak point thing. however, it's not boring. it was just underutilized. mike white clearly does not "get" Asia or Thailand, etc. and only has a connection to it through Buddhism. That was the only thing he actually had any insight or accuracy on. All the rest was him trying too hard to be respectful and showcase the "appealing" aspects of Thailand. Any real Thaiboo wouldn't have been afraid to show lady boys, or tim sharky types, or street food or shit like that. These kinds of angry chefs aren't soft spoken and go into sudden screaming fits, you can feel their anger barely under the surface at all times and you can't feel that in the lead actor.
Also there's one or two chaotic nights every season, it's like that every single night in reality. That's why everyone in the industry is crazy. No one is insane or degenerate enough.

I thought that, despite having an incredible cast, this was the weakest of the seasons. It was almost entirely drama without comedy, whereas the other seasons were primarily comedy, as well as having superior drama than this season. Pretty much every funny scene this season was Parker Posey. Furthermore, the themes just weren't as well thought through as before. Consider just the three Italians last seasons - it was a sophisticated take on how differently three different generations of men approach seduction, without being on the nose at all. The most emotional payoff/theme this season was Carrie Coon's, and I didn't even get it until her final dialogue and it didn't feel earned, I was only touched by it because she is a good actress and what she said felt true.

I really hope season 4 is more of a comedy again like season 1 and less of a soap opera with all the “no, I’m your father” stuff. for what it’s worth, mike white specifically said he intends to do something closer to season 1 in the hbo podcast after the episode last night, maybe something like a film festival or other art world type event. but, he also said that season 2 was originally going to be a g7 or davos type summit in europe and he only changed his idea after seeing the hotel they would be shooting at and realized such a summit would never take place there, so who knows what he’ll actually end up writing for season 4. seems like it will be heavily dependent on the location, and not just the country but the specific hotel and the vibe it has.
the criminals have always been the least interesting parts of the show for me. I much prefer watching the guests and staff. although the prosties in 2 and the russians in 3 were fun too.
I just think he needs to scale back on the heaviness a little.

I think this season was still pretty excellent even if it was the worst of the 3. I think it is a thematic thing like you're insinuating, it is very clear that religion is the theme of the season (MW has even said as such) but it was not woven into the fabric of the story as subtly or comprehensively as the themes in previous seasons (sex in S2 for example). It makes Carrie Coon's monologue at the end feel a bit like wtf are you talking about, and it's a bit film school having to explicitly reference your theme in dialogue by referring to things like friendship as a "religion". It's not organic. But she is a fantastic actor so she does sell it and evoke emotion still.
I think the cast were on par overall. Posey was a good replacement for Coolidge. I disagree a lot with the criticism of Isaacs accent and Saxons acting... I think they were both above average at a minimum. The entire family felt pretty believable (maybe Lochy was the worst of the bunch) with even the sister character bringing it home with her final monologue after a weak start to the series. I think Goggins was wildly underused, as was Rockwell... Lou Wood's character was probably the weakest.
Ultimately S2 > S1 > S3 with Armond still far and away being the best character in the series
