the film definitely overdoes it a bit on the language thing but you'd definitely see language get fucked up within the first generation born post-nukes, for a lot of reasons; harsh existence making childrearing harder, widespread malnourishment means babies are born more fucked up and children grow up to be less intelligent bc less calories for their brains to develop, etc etc. You see this irl - children born in ghettos or abject poverty are often barely able to read and write, and often have fucked up dialects too, you'd see the same thing but much worse after a nuclear war devastates the world.

The real thing the film exaggerates is nuclear winter and radiation. Even with the much larger arsenals at the time the film came out the nuclear winter predictions were ridiculously overexaggerated, not to mention the complete pseudoscience about the ozone layer disappearing and everyone being irradiated ten years in the future which is total bullshit; In the present day with the much smaller arsenals not only would you see a significantly smaller initial death toll but you'd also see virtually no radiation threat since it's mostly thermonuclear airbursts nowadays. The film's main success imo is showing how the greatest threat after nuclear war is ultimately the breakdown of government and trade leading to mass anarchy and starvation, which is entirely accurate to real life imo.
Hopeful for this because I love realistic apocalypse kino and even if adolescence was retarded politically speaking the production value was excellent.
