For more than a decade, scientists have chased the idea of reviving extinct species, a process sometimes called de-extinction. Now, a company called Colossal Biosciences appears to have done it, or something close, with the dire wolf, a giant, extinct species made famous by the television series “Game of Thrones.”

In 2021, a separate team of scientists managed to retrieve DNA from the fossils of dire wolves, which went extinct about 13,000 years ago. With the discovery of additional DNA, the Colossal researchers have now edited 20 genes of gray wolves to imbue the animals with key features of dire wolves. They then created embryos from the edited gray-wolf cells, implanted them in surrogate dog mothers and waited for them to give birth.

The result is three healthy wolves — two males that are 6 months old and one female that is 2 months old, named Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi — that have some traits of dire wolves.

They are big, for one thing, and have dense, pale coats not found in gray wolves. Colossal, which was valued at $10 billion in January, is keeping the wolves on a private 2,000-acre facility at an undisclosed location in the northern United States.

Yes anon we know. The problem is it's much more straight forward to clone something that we still have intact tissue of. It's a whole other animal to try and clone something that only exists in fossilised form, DNA very much not intact and with no similar relative alive on this planet.
But sure, you might get a Pleistocene Park maybe 50 years from now whenever they discover a way to recreate Woolly Mammoths.

Movies arent real

Thats all you had to say

Mammoths when?

DNA has a half-life of 521, even if stored at absolute 0 no dinosaur DNA could have made it into the modern day

when will a grown up one star in a movie

a new era of cave man movies begins now

just wait until they find a way to clone sabre tooths

Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi

Khaleesi

fucking faggot ass science nerds just have to go and make it incredibly fucking gay and lame, god I want to bash those fucking stupid nerds

has a half life!

Good thing every organism has 5 trillion copies of it to sift through to get a full picture
Good thing 99.99999999999% of it is boilerplate coding that can be copied/compared to any other organism on the planet

khaleesi

Why’d they name it after lady dragon Hitler who was killed by her nephew husband after genociding Gaza I mean kings landing? I hope Romulus and Remus eat that one

because CGI dire wolves are in game of thrones

How many IT guys did they hire? Also Pleistocene is gay, Age of Mammals is gay.

What does Daenerys have to do with direwolves? Could have named it Nymeria, lady, or summer

naming it Khaleesi instead of Nymeria, Ghost, Grey Wind, Summer, Shaggydog, or Lady

fucking WHY

the Colossal researchers have now edited 20 genes of gray wolves to imbue the animals with key features of dire wolves

I.e. they’re not direwolves.

didn't read. I already know its fake because I've seen hundreds of fake articles about "muh de-extinction" over the years.

AAAAAAAAGGGH IM BEING RAPED!

IMG_6750.jpg - 1204x844, 769.33K

I want the Dodo brought back but apparently cloning birds is extremely complicated.

Hey look, it's Jason Mamoa, star of the recent hit Minecraft!

I love you now, my rapist

No it is, if you read it you'll see they used the Dire genome. It's on the front of TIME magazine.

I don't think cloning is real. Consider the only animal they ever "cloned" - a sheep. Can you really tell the difference between two sheep?

The mammoth's gotta be next considering every time one is found it's been pretty well-preserved because of the cold

Never gonna happen. The company that was supposed to clone them gave up and did wolly mice instead. I am not kidding.

it's the same company that did these wolves, and the mice were an experiment to test an idea they had on an easier subject than elephants

De-extinction is essentially cloning. You're using the genes of a birth mother, genetically engineering the egg to revert back to certain ancestral DNA attributes and then adding the genome of the extinct animal you wish to re-create.

The Woolly Mammoth is the only thing these companies want to create. But it's a legal and funding nightmare. How the fuck do you encourage an Asian country or a zoo to hand over a rare Asian Elephant so they can encourage it to give birth to a fuzzy, slightly larger version of itself? Every animal welfare group and ecological society is going to be extremely concerned that we're playing God for a species that went extinct BECAUSE there is barely anywhere on Earth where it can logically live. Where do you put such a creature? Will you allow it to breed? The reason this Dire Wolf thing is important is because its proof of concept, it can be done. It just isn't anywhere near done.

When will I get a Neanderthal GF?

Why don't they just go to Africa and catch an Elephant? There's no laws there

Dodobros, we're so back

Where do you put such a creature?

Alaska, Canada, upper Scandinavia

Will you allow it to breed?

Duh.

Because that's an African Elephant. They're different, they're more further distant genetically from Woollys than Asian ones.

How the fuck do you encourage an Asian country or a zoo to hand over a rare Asian Elephant so they can encourage it to give birth to a fuzzy, slightly larger version of itself

Offer them some money? An elephant is around €54,000 in Thailand

See THIS is so much more important.
Why are we bothering with ice age animals when we can bring back Homo fucking Erectus.

went extinct BECAUSE there is barely anywhere on Earth where it can logically live

No

This would be so based... we could all be scientifically accurate racists...

Not even that. I'm so bored of just humans. Humans are boring. Back 100,000 years ago we had TWO types of humans chilling and hanging out. We need that.

wheeze the juice bu-ddy

The Woolly Mammoth is the only thing these companies want to create.

what about other mega fauna like giant sloths, saber tooth tigers and that Australian marsupial wolf that went extinct in the 20th century they are going to have to ban this sort of thing or big companies will create commercial zoo theme parks with exotic extinct animals.

It said in the article in the OP they literally didn’t and just “analyzed” dire wolf DNA then activated certain wolf genes that are similar, same with “wooly mice” they’re not mammoths they’re mice with a fuzzy mod turned on

Colossal Biosciences (the people who brought back the dire wolf) want to bring back:

Woolly Mammoth

Tasmanian Tiger

Northern White Rhino

Dodo bird

This is funny to me because Mike made fun of this idea a year ago.

cloning is based, BASED I TELL YOU

the woolly mice were experiments anon
nobody is going to create a elephant from mice don't be stupid

nobody is going to create a elephant from mice

That’s exactly what I said you dumb guckhead.

oh sorry wait theres more

Castoroides (giant fucking beaver)

Arctodus

Steller's sea cow

Irish elk

great auk

blue buck

ground sloths

moas

saber tooth cats

long horned bison

Columbian mammoth

cave hyena

mastodons

american cheetahs

woolly rhinoceros

This is just cope trying to get more funding and investments. These aren’t Dire Wolves, just designer modern wolves.

dire wolves are nearly 4 feet tall fully grown, anon

Dire Wolves became unextinct before TWOW released

lmao

can we get tazmanian tigers?

kind of sucks devils got super cancer or else they'd be perfect foster moms.

That’s fine. I’ll be walking around with my giant designer wolf and you won’t have anything like a fag

One possibility is just to engineer a herd of hairy olifaunts and set them loose into northern Canada. they can anchor the old Pleistocene ecosystem.
also gives the elephant family as a whole better chances to survive.

we live in a world where these coming back is legitimately feasible with the wonders of genetic science
but I still can't get a job

it's fake bullshit "dire" wolves based on pop-culture perceptions and such an infinitesimal amount of genes that you can't reasonably call these actual direwolves
t. palaeontologist

Well sir, I do need a full-size African elephant and I do need it today. But this just isn't what I'm looking for.

Hmmm. Today I think I will temporarily recreate a bunch of Ice Age savannah fauna, build a temporary zoo for them to promote ICE AGE 6 and then kill them all when it's over.

I hate that we live in a world where I could reasonably see this happening

You should do some sort of telethon-type event where people pay money so you DON'T kill them.

bringing back woolly mammoths from a 4000 year lapse of existence just for fat morons to ride on them in a tacky park somewhere in Alaska for the tourist industry.
