It's unwise to remake a franchise as an exact copy of the original. It's riskier, but more respectful and creative, to find a new spin on it while retaining the DNA of the source.
This Naked Gun is more likely to lean more into poking fun at action thrillers, as the original Police Squad/Naked Gun already did that perfectly.
Edgy? They only acknowledge OJ's presence in the old series and literally stop short of actually making a joke. OJ's guilt and toxicity hasn't been controversial in decades, it's almost like beating a dead horse at this point.
The UK series A Touch Of Cloth does to modern cop shows what Naked Gun did to those old TV series, it's probably a better spiritual sequel to Naked Gun than this reboot.

It's pretty hard trying to make a coherent movie or series out of a series of gags, ZAZ had a hard time with Top Secret about this too.

For the millionth time, he already did deadpan to perfection in the Extras scene, his set of skills is not the question, more like what the director or the studio/producers wanted out of him. The trailer makes it clear they will play it quite broad. True deadpan will confuse a good part of the audience and they need to dumb it way down to have popular success. Naked Gun already dumbed down the deadpan from Police Squad back in the day.

Everybody is missing their dad's and saying how much they love them, the joke is probably Nordberg did an OJ in the movie so his son isn't that fond of him. But yeah basically OJ murdered his wife so they are not going there, but also knowing Seth I'm sure OJs Brief stint on social media also was part of this joke, despite being dated aswell.The only funny gag in the trailer even though it's dated, really disheartening.

It's not like he's a diver who can only hold his breath for 5 minutes under the water, if they ask him to play deadpan like this for a whole movie, he'll do it. I love Leslie's deadpan too in his early movies, but you're comparing different performances and different scripts.

I'm honestly just glad to see Liam Neeson in something more prominent for a change. I've been working my way through his catalogue of low budget action movies from the last 15 years and have been enjoying all of them, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in a comedy.
Seth McFarlane makes great stuff though. Early Family Guy when he was writing, American Dad, Ted, A Million Ways to Die In The West (another great Liam Neeson role), The Orville, all great.
