Haven't watched S8 since probably 2015 and after rewatching episodes 1-5 it's so much better than I remember. Capaldi was awesome during his first season and felt really unique, stern, etc. What the hell happened in S9/S10 that they decided to make him so fucking goofy?

And even then, only got through to him because he caught RTD in a huge god-damn lie where the agent contacted friends he had at Disney and confirmed the show was still in limbo with Disney not wanting to re-up for a third season, directly contradicting RTD who was lying his ass off about season three being on the brink of renewal to gaslight Gatwa into not taking any new gigs.

Heaven Sent is peak television, and Hell Bent is a great end to the character arc

RTD and Chinball hate Collin Baker's run and Peri is a casualty of that hate. Same thing with Romana. RTD and his crew despise the character, to the point of basically putting a blanket ban on her ever showing up in the series. Same with Rani, though Gatwa personally kicked up a storm to force RTD to use Rani once it became apparent that RTD was never going to have Gatwa face any of the Big Three Who villains (Master, Daleks, Cybermen).

Rings of Akhaten feels really cloying to me; the set design is great and Smith gives a hell of a performance, but the leaf conclusion really doesn't sit right with me and I don't find the antagonists at all compelling. To be honest, I think it might have fit better towards the end of the season, after we've explored Clara's character a bit more - might make the conclusion feel more earned.

Also the music is bad, forgot to mention.

And in the end Gatwa didn't even fight the Rani, just chatted for a minute before her plans became undone on their own.

I have long been of the view that it is over, with the highlights of what has happened over the last episode and years in general I am even more convinced of that.

Father's Day and Dalek both basically just have one point and lots of little mistakes in that, bit tedious. Heaven Sent we've already discussed how bad and nonsensical it is.

They deliver on their premise exceedingly well. Eccleston's rage over the Dalek, and the Dalek itself being unstoppable by everything aside itself is great. Rose struggling with her family in Father's Day and Pete sacrificing himself is very compelling. As for Heaven Sent, there are some holes in it, but you can really feel 12's grief and the breaking the wall scene is one of the few times that Moffat's speeches really work in his episodes.

It's tanked by the end of the episode. Like when I first watched it I was crazy about it but over time I've soured on Bad Wolf, and of course the real reason for Eccleston regenerating.

God I wish JMS would oversee a few seasons. He's not the same JMS that had the significant input of Ellison in writing Babylon 5 (the animated special was rather disappointing, not gonna lie), but he knows how to run a sci-fi show without ridiculous bullshit and how to work around significant production issues, and doesn't seem to have degraded quite as much as RTD.

The Series 1 episodes are great but those two both have flaws in being too simple; Dalek is all just set in a few rooms not really progressing much beyond the halfway point and becoming incredibly predictable with the Doctor sort of turning evil. Father's Day similarly does some excellent stuff but also has little else to think about so, besides the sentimentality, isn't great. Heaven Sent is shit.

I don't mind the episodes being simple because it's a simple thing executed very well. For example, with Dalek you can tell it's most likely going to end with the Doctor learning some kind of lesson after wanting to kill it, but the pure hatred 9 has during the episode and his dynamic with the Dalek makes it great. It's also an episode where if the show never brought Daleks back again, it would have been a good end for them.

I agree that it's the best finale. I suppose based on the tier list my top 3 would be Parting of the Ways, Doomsday, and The Doctor Falls, in no particular order. Sounds probably right even if all of the "This is day I die" stuff from Doomsday is shit.

Not always, but sometimes I find that one part of a two parter can make the other one feel worse than it was, because it's still part of the same story and feels worse from association. Time of the Angels could have led to a better second part and I would have ranked it higher.

Hard reboot. Get rid of all of the lore, Big Finish will satisfy those who crave it (the occasional cameo can be explained away if needed). Throw everything away other than a mad humanoid alien time traveling in a bigger-on-the-inside box with people that happened to tag along on the journey. Classic villains are fine, but they will have no relation to the original ones. Then as long as you don't center the existence of the whole universe solely on the Doctor it might just work out fine.

Ncuti is extremely fit and it was only 8 episodes, if anything i could see the promotional schedule being a lot. when you take on the role you become the face of the franchise and have to do lots of interviews, PR, photoshoots, etc. shooting the show itself is almost miniscule in comparison. i also don't think he enjoyed having to be a role model, not being allowed to swear in public was something he complained about.

you don't do it in one shoot, you often have to re-shoot scenes over and over again. "running down a hallway" can involve doing it all day because they need multiple angles.
