picrel was considered a shitty, poorly made movie for retards in 1988
Oldfags really, really didn't know how good they had it.

Oldfags really, really didn't know how good they had it.
All “shitty” movies from the 80s are literally masterpieces compared to truly utter shit being made today.
If you where like 12 years old when you watched this it was one of the coolest movies ever
It's literally everyone's favorite80s movie
Any other Kowloon kino?
Including Trump
It's really true wuth the more old genre/exploitation movies I watch, especially those from the 70s and 80s. They blow movies now that are considered on the same tier as they were back when they were released completely out of the water regardless of genre.
Something in particular that bothers me with nu-stuff is the lack of effort involved. B-movies like Bloodsport or The Warriors always felt remarkably well-crafted and thought-out despite their silly plots and weak characters. They had excellent cinematography and color theory, dynamic and appropriate casting that played simplistic, stylized characters convincingly, and often went the extra mile with original and distinctive soundtracks.
I can't even remember the last time I watched a nu-B-movie action sloppa that had any shots as memorable or well-made as picrel, or any with as memorable characters or fights. And nobody gives a shit in general about OSTs or scores anymore, but this is especially revealing in newer lower-budget stuff.
Crime Story and Crying Freeman are right up your alley. If you're into manga Kowloon Generic Romance is one of the few great nu-manga out there.
it has at least one objective quality, the fantastic OST. Also the tournament idea was rather new (enter the dragon did it but it doesn't really feel like a tournament). and it's time to admit van damme has some charisma and played well in one or two scenes.
but we should also always remember these are popcorn flicks, not "cult classics", otherwise civilization will crumble.
the movie is well put together but the slowmo fighting scenes are frankly embarassing compared to the average hk kino
The 80s and early 90s were the golden age of action. The people who didn't like Bloodsport were uptight boomers who don't have as big of a voice now (Top Gun: Maverick would have been panned if it had come out back then).
Bloodsport and Kickboxer are indistinguishable in my memory.
Same but for me it's Lionheart and Kickboxer. All of them are kino though.
not liking bloodsport
Get the fuck out
The setting of the Kowloon Walled City was also really inspired. Filming there on location and really building the film around the setting gave it an organic, immersive dystopian feeling that's usually hard to get in low-budget movies. I couldn't imagine how much worse it would've been if they stuck to the Bahamas setting from the book.
But I think what made the movie most for me though were all the small details: the janny sneaking the golden tooth that was knocked out of the Arab's mouth and literally slobbering all over it, the fighters all having their own builds and fighting styles (i.e the nigger using monkey technique lmao), Tanaka's actor leaning surprisingly hard into emotional moments early on in the film, and of course all the deliberately cartoony, caricatured characters (I loved Lin in particular).
I was always entertained by all the weird choices made in directing these silly characters.
Top Gun: Maverick would have been panned if it had come out back then
Top Gun itself was panned by Boomers back in the day, it has a 59% on RT despite universally being considered one of the most defining blockbusters of the 80s and all time (it was even entered into the NFR).
the slowmo fighting scenes are frankly embarassing compared to the average hk kino
It's just how non-Rocky American martial arts movies were at the time. It makes for really silly scenes that almost feel deliberate but are often more funny for the fact that they weren't.
Regardless, I much prefer it over the trope of shitty low-framerate slow-mo that plagued 90s and 00s movies.
>not liking bloodsport
Quite the opposite, I LOVED it.
I'm just saying that standards were so much higher back then it was considered a massive pile of shit at release despite being miles better than anything newer and objectively being a great popcorn film.
"Lionheart King of the Jungle ooga-booga bix nood!"
monkey technique
not really, bloodsport has always been considered a high brow of martial arts films
because the guy who directed this worked on godfather 2 and the guy who edited the movie won an oscar
sequels are trash though, and Daniel Bernhardt is a terrible actor
what was his problem?
I don't have much of a relationship with my Dad, but I appreciate that he showed me every Van Damme movie when I was growing up. Kickboxer was my favourite.
Bloodsport shitty?
Next you will say roadhouse wasn't fone cinema.
It was pretty well received and made Van Damme a star.
The brick hit back
Onions protein overdose
It was pretty well received
Critics raped it back in the day.
Definitely made a lot of money and became a defining hit of the era though, and for good reason.
Bloodsport shitty?
Reading comprehension. I loved it and love the big 80s genre movies immensely, I was just noting that it was trashed by critics at the time.
Truth
Daniel Bernhardt is a terrible actor
Which makes him perfect for the Deathstalker reboot
Nobody gave a shit about critics back in the day. Now you retards worship them.
>picrel was considered a shitty, poorly made movie for retards in 1988
My dad used to love this movie. He still does, but he used to, too.
Same.
Funny enough that's the reason I finally ended up watching it.
Now you retards worship them.
Believe me, nobody does now given we've seen the shit they suck off more than anything else.
They were just less astroturfed back in the day and more concerned with the objective quality of the film; which is why movies that became massive with the GA or developed a cult following like Bloodsport were really special in contrast to now where things are more murky.
probably because they have the same composer and the guy who did cinematography for bloodsport directed kickboxer
lol
Kowloon Generic Romance
Should I try manga or anime?
That's not true. Just because guys like Ebert shit on everything back then doesn't mean the masses didn't love this shit to death. You could make the case that there were so many good movies to choose from that not all of them had the luxury of being financially successful. It's like being offered a dozen different gourmet meals, but you don't have the time, money or appetite for all of them.
Manga, the anime isn't bad but it butchers the story and turns it into straight-up sci-fi for some retarded reason when it's done far better and more subtly in the manga.
The manga also has great, distinctive art and sort of attempts to balance Seinen and Josei styles, as the girls are drawn in Seinen styles and the men are drawn in Josei styles and behave accordingly, which to me was very refreshing.
Thanks, anon, I'll definitely check it out. Synopsis kinda intrigued me.
He's just mad he doesn't have 4 arms.

Roadhouse was always gay, and over the years only got more homosexual.
You're welcome anon.
It's one of the very few nu-manga I really love because it not only has an artstyle that draws more from older manga from the 80s and 90s but also has the intelligence and dynamism those had before all the tropes became calcified by genre and demographic.
It's sort of a snapshot into what's been sorely missing in the medium for a couple decades.

I would never join a club that would allow me in it
Are you talking about the Gyllenhall one? The original is a classic.
