Most people fail their tests by not being performative enough or stuff the driver doesn't even think of as mistakes.
If you don't move your head enough to show them that you are actually looking at your rear view mirror they can fail you if everything else is right. Or even worse, people have failed solely from pulling into a crosswalk before a pedestrian has fully cleared it

It has more to do with how transmissions are made than aesthetics or anything else, the reverse gear needs to be on the beginning/end

Euros had standard transitions generally because your cars historically were small in both size and power input. Auto transmissions were always seen as the luxury option. You had stick shift as standard because you are poor, and proud of that I guess.
