Suddenly curious if AI can redraw the whole thing to look more seamless.
is george lucas literally retarded?
Yes, but at the time the special edition was seen as just a good excuse to re-release the films theatrically. And as someone who was born the year Jedi came out, an entire generation had only ever seen these movies in 4:3 pan and scan on your 25" standard definition television on a VHS that was worn the fuck out from being replayed a million times.
It was cool to see it in theaters, and even if most of the new additions were pretty unnecessary no one was that worried because lucas hadn't revealed that the original negatives were "destroyed" in the process of making the special edition, making it the only official version going forward.
He also couldn't leave shit well enough alone and continued to fuck with the special edition for years.
Especially when his explicit intention behind the THX remaster in the early 90's was that the original print of ANH was rotting and falling apart so he wanted to remaster all three movies in THX quality to preserve them for the future.
The prequels being dumb shitty movies isn't what made a lot of people turn on lucas, it was how he treated the movies and the fans of the movies that established his empire in the first place that soured a lot of people.
a lot of the minor tweeks and space stuff still look fine, granted those were touched up again on the dvd. only the textures on some of the creatures come off as super dated. but the original effects still held up great though
Nope, the original movie was super dated and the original creator made a superior version of them, actual artists never stop fixing their work
What's the worst special edition change? For me it's the Jabba Palace song, that's unforgivable.
They Also changed the song during the jabbas lair shit in 6 to go from a really catchy nice song that could be sci fi to a beyond generic shit song that could be 90s earth
Musicmind
It's really frustrating because while the song is godawful, I don't really mind some of the new bandmates.
actual artists never stop fixing their work
actual artists don't make consumerist slop like Star Wars
FPBP
What do you mean Lucas, the author of the work, reserves the right to make a new draft of his novel?! He forgot to ask ME, I'm the real author of Star Wars if I paid for a ticket!
The SEs weren’t just about “updating the visuals.” They were about erasing history. After the divorce, George was bitter. Marcia had edited the original into a cultural landmark and he couldn’t stand that her fingerprints were still all over it. So he rewrote the past and recut the film way in a clumsy, pathetic manner just to undo her work.
Also, in the original script Han never shot greedo. In fact he was scared of him and nearly cried when they met. Marcia suggested that Han not be such a wimp and told lucas to make him seem like a cool badass cowboy and just shoot greedo. Lucas agreed. 20 years later when the special editions came out Lucas hated the fact everyone loved Marcias idea so much he edited it to make greedo shoot first.
The whole thing was just done to spite Marcia. Worst of all, he destroyed the original negatives. You can’t watch the real, unaltered Star Wars anymore, not legally. He made sure of that. He LITERALLY destroyed Star Wars.
Kek you are unironically citing lies from a retarded feminist dyke youtuber

Chud in every single other instance when something is changed in film/tv:
b...but this contradicts THE ESTABLISHED LORE! THE SACRED LORERINO! THIS IS WHITE GENOCIDE NOOOOOOO
chuds when George Lucas destroys SW:
he fucking based auteur... I wish he would change it even more to trigger the boomer libs hehe...
get a load of mr "actual artist" over here, lmao
Serious answer: blame CRT TVs. That is chiefly that George Lucas used to review CGI. And now that we have modern TVs, we are seeing details that he never noticed.
I am a pot and boy is this kettle black
How can I make this about politics?
It always was about politics. Chuds only pretend to like the prequels as a contrarian reaction against the sequels, and they only hate the sequels because they consider them to be leftist (due to the presence of a woman and a black person in the main cast). Every opinion that chuds have depends on US politics crap.
No, blame George Lucas. He said that if something is only in the film for 2 seconds, he will spend exactly 2 seconds deciding if it looks fine.
Marcia's strongest editorial influence in ANH is felt in the end battle sequence, which she was very involved in (though conceived and finalized by George, who was lead editor on the film as with all his films).
She was only on the film for a few months, and made few creative contributions. One was convincing George to go through with killing Obi-Wan.
She fought for the inclusion of ANH's Jabba sequence and opening Anchorhead sequence.
Marcia debunks the idea that she was the heart of Star Wars, while Lucas was the head.
Marcia divorced George after becoming involved with another man and took half of his money, leading to the end of their creative partnership. Contrary to what many think, George did not make the special editions to take away royalties from her, as she is still a credited editor on the movies.
He said that if something is only in the film for 2 seconds, he will spend exactly 2 seconds deciding if it looks fine.
Source? Not saying that he outright didn't say it because he IS a massive hypocrite, but source please.
You underestimate the CRT problem, doughever. Even today some fan editors are still using them to their own detriment. CRTs have their place (like in classic gaming), but they have no place anymore in film restoration.
Marcia's strongest editorial influence in ANH
She had no editorial influence on SW by 1981. By that time is was entirely his editorial call.
Honestly I was mostly fine with it until he put NOOOOOO in RotJ with the blu ray release
George, who was lead editor on the film
that's just made up. is this an AI post?
Marcia was the lead editor. She saved SW, which the academy recognized when they gave her an oscar. Meanwhile George still has zero, lmao.

Lucas ballwashers think that his laziness is a based philosophy of design so there are tons of articles and videos about his genius 3-second rule
Its insane that chudcels defend this.
Has Disney released a fixed version on bluray yet?
She did not save my film. Get a life, loser.
I didn't say she was involved with the re-release, I'm saying that if Lucas wanted to erase her footprint he should have fucked with the end battle, not Han and Greedo.
He did erase much of her footprint by creating a new edit called A NEW HOPE. It isn't just the title he changed in 1981. More to come. Soon.
saving a film is when you're only involved in a production for a couple of months, only alter 4 minutes of footage and leave
I think most of the changes are really whatever, but Jabba appearing in ANH makes his reveal in ROTJ considerably less impactful
Jabba appearing in ANH
He's also too small by at least half. That may have been intentional so as to keep two characters on screen, but there you have it.
I mean he was inserted over a scene they shot with a regular actor, so they had to play around that
They could have done a better job, but again, they were using CRT TVs. That's part of the reason why they redid Jabba in 2004 and again in 2008. They upgraded their monitors and crapped their pantaloons.
Sure but what I mean is that there's a part where Han quite literally circles around Jabba so the size of the CGI character had to be similar to the human actor
Many of the changes are good, like the cantina, Death Star attack, and the location shots on Tattooine. It's a shame about the bad ones.
Lol no. They "punched up" Ford digitally. They could have done the same thing no matter Jabba's size, but at a certain point they would have had to alter Ford's limbs to make it look like he climbed over Jabba. I am of the mind that Jabba would not be ok with either, but Lucas doesn't care on that point, this we know.
Death Star attack
Get a better TV, then come back with your opinion. The CGI material has aged like milk. Now the original? Solid as iron.
They "punched up" Ford digitally.
Exactly, and is non-sensical and looks terrible, they would had to do some extremely janky editing to make Ford walk a bigger circle. Though naturally the sensible option would be to not include the scene all together because even if you manage to make it look good it detracts from Jabba as a character

Ja. They even call attention to the fact that he was originally human in the dialogue.
The special edition were what I grew up with. I watched them on TV mostly. Nowerdays I would say the various "original version" are better. But I recently stumbled apon the "final cut" versions. These are basically the special editions without the bad and unnecessary parts. This leaves us with the "good" changes of the special edition and also adds some new elements, like a changes Imperator Hologramm, or an aged up Hayden at the end of ROTJ.
youtube.com
Aged-up Hayden is even worse and makes even less sense than the alteration. Original is always better.
The special edition were what I grew up with
This makes me profoundly sad.
It was all Marcia!!!
Fuck off Mike.
If George Lucas were still active today, he'd be trying to throw AI at everything he could. He's not just retarded, he's spiritually Indian.
the "good" changes of the special edition
Hayden at the end of ROTJ
Commit suicide
actual artists never stop fixing their work
Literally the opposite, any professional artist will tell you that overcorrection and trying to perfect your work is a recipe for disaster
Tim Allen at the end
lol
Literally the opposite
No it's not.
This is why tons of different cuts exist for most movies.
Coppola, Kubrick, Scott and the list goes on.
Nta, but all revisions suck compared to the originals, no exceptions.
The Star Wars special editions are definitely an expection because they are better than the outdated og cuts
