Is it worth engaging with any of the old Star Wars Legends material? Or is it just depressing because Disney killed it all
Is it worth engaging with any of the old Star Wars Legends material...
Dunno.
engaging with the material
just say reading, fuckhead
Worthwhile if your mind compartmentalizes well. I can tell by brain to forget EVERYTHING made past 1983 if I wish. Heck, lately I've been ordering it to recall just Star Wars (1977), so if you can do that or approach it that way if even just a bit, it will probably still be worthwhile to you.
*Note I have not seen any Disney Wars slop since 2019, so your miles may vary.
Yes. No matter how retarded it can be, it's still way better than nuwars. A lot of nuwars lore is actually reworked material from the EU. George was going to use a red, tattooed female Sith Twi'lek from Legends comics as Maul's apprentice in the sequel trilogy before he sold to Disney.
they wouldn't have started publishing it again if it wasn't
Old EU is vastly superior to Disney sequel slop and there is always a chance they do a time-travel alternate timeline retcon to reinstate it.
Listen, Heir to the Empire may be "non-canon" post-Disney, but Thrawn is peak hyperstrategic Chiss brilliance, an S-tier tactician whose 4D hyperspace chess outmaneuvers midichlorian-saturated plotlines. Zahn's trilogy retcons galactic geopolitics with proto-Imperial remnant realism. It's essential Expanded Universe lore—Legends-tier metanarrative—pre-Mouse retcon. Read it, nerf-herder.
engaging with any of the old Star Wars Legends material
this is zoomy blog speak i refuse to engage with you HA
You're not missing out on much bro
Yeah if you can ignore all the new slop
What a cute little doggy.
these are like force supressing lizards right? ysalami or something?
just play dark forces 2: jedi knight(light), dark forces 2: mysteries of the sith(light), jedi outcast, and then jedi academy(dark).
Basically all pre-Phantom Menace is untouched. Even High Republic stuff doesn't retcon anything.
A good book is a good book.
Jedi Academy... with mods
Disney Wars has been mostly awful but they've made some good books. And terrible ones.
post RoTJ
just stick with the Thrawn and Jedi acedemy shit, anything after that is just retarded (granted not as bad as nuwars shit but thats not a really high bar)
No. 99% of it is putrid shit.
havent read the book, but why are his fingers light sabers?
I've read the Thrawn trilogy, should I read something else before reading The Hand of Thrawn Duology?
I marathoned this book in 4 months. Off and on.
It's a stylized depiction of force lightning.
Read the KOTOR comics
Thrawn trilogy is not without problems, but it is a fun read.
Or is it just depressing because Disney killed it all
It happened, so it's as real as you want it to be.
It's depressing but it's still much better than everything that comes after.
I used to bitch and moan about the Yuuzhan Vong storyline, New Jedi Order, but I read it again recently after Disneyshit and it was so much goddamn better that it's not even funny.
The Darth Bane books need to be switched. Path Of Destruction > Dynasty of Evil
all this nu-trek shit
Fuck off forever faggot, preferably off a cliff.
It's a real mixed bag, sometimes brilliant, sometimes dogshit.
There's some genuine gems worth checking out, Zahn,Luceno, stackpole - all good fun. X-wing series was my favourite for enjoyable guff.
Outside of a few hard rules like you can't kill off character x and y, Lucas was fairly open to just letting writers do their thing.
Years ago I heard someone talk fondly of a general grevios comic book origin story
I have no idea what the tiers mean, which one is the best tier?
How far are they at this point? Installed it 3 years ago and a lot of stuff wasn't included yet.
Why do you think it would matter whether or not some novels from thirty years ago are in line with stuff being made now?
Phasma had a whole book setting up the character. some people liked it
Rian gives her 5 seconds of screen time
classic.
I bet you were expecting her to matter..
expectations subverted!
I wish so fucking bad that Halo had a legends / Canon distinction but for Bungie era / 343 era.
The forerunner's will always be human, the amount of lore rape 343 committed is so much worse than with star wars because the old lore has basically been lost to time outside of hard copies like specific books, the wiki though assumes all modern "lore". Like tears in rain.
No. The books are mediocre at their absolute best. Lame mary sues like mara jade are considered fan favorites. It's unironically slop.
Someone post the nuwars fart orgy pages.
Loved the X-Wing novels. I remember being so excited when they announced Rogue One thinking it would be about Rogue Squadron/Wedge Anitilles, then being disappointed when I found out it was just about a bunch of terrorists.
Stackpole's stuff was always good
Is it worth engaging with any of the old Star Wars Legends material? Or is it just depressing because Disney killed it all
It's worth it. The Disney buy-out had a silver lining: there's a clear cut-off date.
Heir to the Empire trilogy, Star Wars: KOTOR, the X-wing series, the new Jedi Order, Star Wars Legacy, etc.
You'll find plenty to love in the original EU
I like the 70's Han Solo books
They manage to get his character down pretty even though most of it is just based on ANH and fells very Indiana Jones esque in the despite most coming out before Raiders
The forerunner's will always be human
Bungie wasn't even consistent on whether or not the humans were Forerunners.
I tried reading this trilogy a few years ago and couldn't finish reading the first one because every single fucking scene with Luke, Han, and Leia had a bunch of repeated dialogue from the movies. Just as much memberberries as Disney shoves in their stuff.
No. The books are mediocre at their absolute best. Lame mary sues like mara jade are considered fan favorites. It's unironically slop.
Bullshit.
The Vong were the logical continuation of star wars because Lucas made the galaxy extremely small and completely known. Any new enemy had to come from outside if it wasn't gonna be an ass-pull somehow never being seen, had to be immune to the force, and had to have some distinctive way to be scary. Something like the Vong was inevitable
They were though. The only contradiction is in the few H3 terminals written by frank o conner the man who ruined halo. That's literally it, besides those terminals it's completely consistent though both design and story that forerunners are human
It actually makes me happy that it's dead, because it means Disney can't actually ruin it with more of their own brand of continuations.
books
The eu was never good
Dark Empire comic is cool
Empire at War videogame us the EU that is canon
Dark Forces and Shadows of the Empire era is great
Disney shit is easily ignored because their scope is tiny, there's not a lot, and what is there is really shit.
It's best to leave it behind as a part of your childhood.
Why? This is what I feared I should do but I couldn't articulate why
Play these games
Bullshit. There are millions if not trillions of planets. Just as much people and cultures. There's also unknown regions. Discount Warhammer 40k aliens extragalactic invasion bullshit is so utterly asinine, I can't even wrap my mind around it. And if the best you could come up with to challenge the Jedi is to literally challenge their established powers, i.e. force immunity and lightsaber resistant armor, then you don't really have anything interesting to tell, and the stakes are inflated entirely artificially. And for what? "Unite against bigger threat" cliché story? This is when EU started fellating and whitewashing the Empire hard. Which ended in disgraceful Legacy of the Force and Legacy comics. Shameful slop that is anti-star wars to its core.
They're children's stories. Your time is better spent on more adult things
This. The books are dogshit compared to the movies.
There is not millions nor trillions in Lucas' galaxy. It's the size of a small city and always has been. You don't get to pretend it's in any way realistic or has anything to do with a real galaxy, fucking retard.
more adult things
like what
Cmon, we had Kevin J Anderson and the yuzan vong in the eu. It was pretty shit most the time. Like the asteroid, and like girlfriend of the trilogy/ book.
Thrawn trilogy is memeshit, unironically. It's considered the best of the EU which is an incredibly low bar. The only interesting thing was C'baoth using battle meditation to command fleets of fighters in battle.
Profit for your boss.
That's literally it, besides those terminals it's completely consistent though both design and story that forerunners are human
If humans are Forerunners, that makes the Prophets complete idiots for knowing this, and still killing them because "religion = bad." It makes no sense to call humans "reclaimers" if they're just Forerunners. Halo 2/3 are already terribly written, but making Forerunners humans just makes everything worse.
It works better for the entire storyline if they are separate species, which 343 even decided to retcon humans and Forerunners to coming from the same original species to appease the older fans.
The only contradiction is in the few H3 terminals written by frank o conner the man who ruined halo.
Bungie still included those terminals. So, they either didn't give a shit, condoned the information, or they weren't smart enough to catch that contradiction in their massive AAA game.
nuke disney for licensing out to these subhumans
Just as much people and cultures. There's also unknown regions. Discount Warhammer 40k aliens extragalactic invasion bullshit is so utterly asinine
"There are a bunch of unknown planets and culture! But the culture of the Yuuzhan-vong is bullshit because....shut up!"
DUDE CLONE LUKE LMAO
dropped hard
That's what makes it kino, the covenant are waging a holy war against their own gods. You're completely wrong, halo's story only makes a lick of sense if the forerunners are human
"Wow, these movies respect logic so well that these two characters aren't in a vacuum sealed environment with just oxygen masks."
What other Halo books are worth reading? I read pic related in elementary school.
the covenant are waging a holy war against their own gods
It makes ZERO sense. Especially if the Prophets KNOW that humans are connected somehow to their Gods. And the Prophets go back and forth regarding believing that the Halos will lead them to Godhood and believing that Halos will kill everyone. And don't blame that on Halo 3, because we had Halo 2 where Truth tells Tartarus to activate Delta Halo on the way to Earth which could have easily killed everyone if he succeeded.
all of Eric Nylunds books are really good, same with Contact Harvest
Read Contact Harvest which is by Joe Staten who also wrote the stories for all the games. In it it is revealed that:
A Covenant ship used it's Luminary to scan the human colony of Harvest and they discovered hundreds of thousands of Forerunner artifacts. In response to this, two Prophets entered the Dreadnought in High Charity to consult with the Oracle (the Forerunner AI, Mendicant Bias), who reveals that the artifacts are in fact the human inhabitants, who he calls the Reclaimers and declares them to be his 'makers'.
The two Prophets are horrified by this revelation, as the existence of Forerunners that were left behind would mean that the Great Journey failed, and that the Rings will not lead to believers ascending to Godhood. Alongside another Prophet, these two would become the new leaders of the Covenant (Truth, Mercy and Regret) and declare war on humanity, hoping to keep the truth under wraps.
Well done sir. Hollywood will keep making their slop, but we don't have to recognize it. I myself don't believe Indiana Jones had any sequels after Last Crusade, or that Star Trek continued after TNG ended with all good things.
Read Contact Harvest which is by Joe Staten who also wrote the stories for all the games. In it it is revealed that:
Oh, so I have to read expanded universe books to make sense of the games, which Bungie said was lesser canon? Isn't that the exact same thing 343 did?
The two Prophets are horrified by this revelation, as the existence of Forerunners that were left behind would mean that the Great Journey failed....Alongside another Prophet, these two would become the new leaders of the Covenant (Truth, Mercy and Regret) and declare war on humanity, hoping to keep the truth under wraps.
How? If you discover that your Gods (if you believe in them) are connected to a new different species, it would be heresy to keep killing them. Then, it would be for secular reasons, not religious ones, defeating the whole purpose of the "Covenant religion = bad". Not to mention that Halo 3 already showcases that Truth believes in the promise of ascendency while also acknowledging that apparently humans (who they have deemed worthy of killing) are the only ones capable of activating their tech, and apparently aren't afraid of telling that fact to literally anyone as was the case with Tartarus, the human prisoners, or the multiple broadcasts across Halo 3.
Do you think Lucas would have sold out to disney if Q had shown him the sequel trilogy?
Actually he probably would have. They made the prequels look like masterpieces by comparison.
Truth in Halo 3 is dumbed down from Halo 2, as he should know firing the rings will kill everyone so yeah it just seems crazy, but I think his plan was hiding on the Ark since it's beyond the galaxy so out of range of the Halo Rings. I agree though that Halo 3 is pretty ambiguous and stupid at points like when Miranda is killed
Legends
If you call it that you suck mouse cock and should kill yourself
Truth in Halo 3 is dumbed down from Halo 2
No, he's just as stupid when he knows that humans are the only ones to activate the rings and never addresses it. Don't even get me started on the idiocy of committing genocide against the Elites at the same time because they "didn't believe hard enough" even though they literally gave up power and still obeyed the Prophets.
but I think his plan was hiding on the Ark since it's beyond the galaxy so out of range of the Halo Rings
So, Truth DID know that the Great Journey was a lie while also believing that he'd become a God. And this isn't even getting into the stupidity of having Guilty Spark who apparently never told him about the rings despite telling the Heretic leader. And there's no reason to activate them to kill the humans when they're already steam-rolling over all of them. Truth literally believes that the activation of the Halo rings will make him a God (in spite of the safety of the Ark) when the Ark is already filled with Flood.
I agree though that Halo 3 is pretty ambiguous and stupid at points like when Miranda is killed
Man, that was stupid. She literally could have already killed Johnson with that crash-landing, had no other soldiers with her, abandoned her own ship, and had no back-up. She accomplishes nothing and dies like an idiot.
They betrayed the Elites because they were the only part of the covenant that was starting to figure out the truth that the great journey was a lie, as evidenced by the heretic leader and his band of rebels they send the arbiter to kill.
You can just ignore the Disney canon if you want. When I think about Star Wars I only really think about the original trilogy anyways. If you prefer it then the EU canon is more valid than whatever Disney says happened.
boobs in space...
only if you want to be cripplingly depressed about what will never be
Pure pazaak.
all the seething Disniggers coming out of the woodwork to cry about a bunch of books, games and comics that are better than Andor or Ahsoka will ever be
I live for this shit.
KOTOR 1&2 and the Darth Bane trilogy are good starting points. I think the Darth Caedus series is probably worth reading. It's not the most amazing writing ever but I do like Jacen as a character and found it pretty interesting overall. I enjoyed the rogue squadron and wraith squadron books but I haven't read them since I was a kid so I have no idea how they hold up now.
filoniggers will always seethe knowing that cw2003 will always line up with rots better than tcw, terminator grievous and all
I myself don't believe Indiana Jones had any sequels after Last Crusade
My brother.
or that Star Trek continued after TNG ended with all good things
Pretty much. I do watch DS9 and Voyager, but those are in a different spot in my mind. Those aren't "real" Treks, just interesting what ifs.
The biggest mistake they made overall is making part of The Federation evil (Section 9 or something?).
With Indiana Jones I have never even seen Dial Soap sequel and the Skull one was bad enough that I never seem to want to see it ever again. Yes, seeing Marion was cool, but the direction wasn't up to par and the sets looked cheap. Those things alone ruined it for me, and then instead of a dashing hero, we get a broken down old man. Not my bag either, anon.
Is it worth engaging with any of the old Star Wars Legends material?
Plenty. Had George's input and direction, but the authors had lattitude to push things. And it's in continuity. Try the Bounty Hunter tales, Shadow in the Mind's Eye (originally an in-between Empire & ROTJ one-off), the X-Wing series, maybe The Clone Commando/Imperial Commando ones (improves as it goes; Cawkwell did Gears of War 3 game script & novelization).
Lost Star
Dark Lord
Catalyst
Phasma
Shadows Fall
Alphabet
Darth Bane trilogy
above Zahn or Death trooper novel
Trash list
Movie Battles mod was cool, at least a dozen years ago
Thrawn is peak hyperstrategic Chiss brilliance, an S-tier tactician whose 4D hyperspace chess outmaneuvers midichlorian-saturated plotlines. Zahn's trilogy retcons galactic geopolitics with proto-Imperial remnant realism. It's essential Expanded Universe lore—Legends-tier metanarrative—pre-Mouse retcon. Read it, nerf-herder.
Plagueis is retardedly kino.
Listen to the audiobook rather than read the novel. I rarely recommend this but the voice acting is A1 and the sound effects/music makes it feel like you’re listening to a Star Wars movie.
Audible gives you one free credit if you have Prime (just bum it off your mother)
RoS novelization at the top
all novels spawned by Aftermath (Phasma, Alphabet, Inferno Squad etc) in the upper half of the chart
Grim
it feel like you’re listening to a Star Wars movie
Especially when female voices by male.
Although, Sheev actor really tried to stick to "nice Palpatine" From TPM
It's usually best at the top, worst at the bottom.
Wouldn't killing them be heresy?
Yeah but if no one knows, who's gonna stop you? The Covenant mooks are believers but it's pretty convincingly shown that the Prophets are totally full of shit and are only interested in their own power and maintaining their grip on the highest rung in society. Pretty clearly aping the Catholic church in the medieval era.
The Disney buy-out had a silver lining: there's a clear cut-off date.
?
The legends EU is better than anything Disney has ever put out.
The SWTOR lore videos absolutely grabbed my imagination as a kid, I still love listening to them now, it's so cool. The Great Hyperspace War and Exar Kun and all that shit is peak Star Wars
She didn't deserve to die
