and how did they line up with reality?
One of them didn't line up.
I assured the chuds for over a year that neither Hermione or Ron would be black, that HBO wouldn’t try that on what will be the biggest tv show of all time, and got told I was retarded and wait and see and etc.
So I’m not surprised that they’re perfectly casted
I expected Hermione to be blacker, like Annabeth.
>What were your expectations for HBO's HP trio casting
White
bullshit
White
Cope retard you didn’t expect that at all
They don't look like 1991 kids
I am legitimately surprised none of them are black. I expected a black Hermione both to have the "black smart girl" cliché they love right now and because I assumed after the Cursed Child episode Rowling would have a chip on her shoulder about it and push for it.
MUD BLOOD! MUD BLOOD! MUD BLOOD!
I do not believe you thought they would all be white for even a second.
well they aren't
what do you want them to do, time travel?
What were your expectations for HBO's H
none, it's gonna be garbage like every other recent adaptation.
Who cares it's obviously the script that's going to be retarded
I always expected Harry to be white, it would be a step too far even for modern execs, but I did think they were going to mess with Ron and Hermione both. Even if being ginger was the Weasley's whole thing, I thought they'd mess with it anyway. Indian Ron or something, or vaguely Asian Ron.
Hermione, come on you know what everyone expected.
closer than I thought
even the obligatory racebaiting swap is less egregious than I thought it would be, she at least looks cute
I thought the trio's new casting was perfectly fitting; an unfathomably dull cast for the dullest franchise in movie history. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.
a-at least the books were good though
"No!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.
ginger
How'd they swing that?
I always expected Harry to be white, it would be a step too far even for modern execs
Harry is probably the one they absolutely could have made mixed and got away with it too since it doesnt factor into much in the book. Having Snape, the former wizard KKK member hating the mixed race wizard works on a subliminal level. Doing it to anyone else doesnt.
Nah, the lead of the show is absolutely going to be white. Even with other ones that got wracked with raceswapping and focus on diverse extras, like The Witcher, Rings of Power, Wheel of Time, Percy Jackson, all of them have a white protagonist, be they male or female.
Never cared about Harry Potter, but as long as the TERF Queen JK Rowling approves of the casting I'll keep laughing about how she lives rent free in zillenial shitlibs heads
no i was saying Harry being mixed would be the one that could work the best of the three and even other cast members. They already fucked up with Snape being black.
she lives rent free in zillenial shitlibs heads
trannies live rent free in hers. Maybe shes a Anon Babble poster?
I thought after shitscrubbing Snape that Hermione would be white. Guess I was wrong. The other two are more in line with what I was expecting.
Snape black makes it a no watch.
Not watching unless they recast Snape and half the professors.
The snape reveal already told us that the show is not being made in good faith. I'm not even racist, by Anon Babble standards, but I'm also not a fucking idiot.
i would have preferred a cute jet black one, poos just look sick and dirty all the time
Snape just cannot be black, a bunch of other characters can be tho. Even Dumbledore could have been black instead of snape.
half the professors
only snape and mcgonagall have been cast to date, all other professors are yet to be revealed
This. I was already annoyed they were doing it, but i got why ($$$) however, making Snape, the Wizard KKK member a black guy is retarded. He meets Lily potter in the fucking late 50s. Oh yes, a little black boy and lily white girl are totally gonna become friends then! the fact they are both magic is now the 2nd least believable part of it.
Alan Rickman was also a terrible casting choice, but fans ate that slop up. So I'm sure they'll eat this slop up too.
He meets Lily potter in the fucking late 50s.
he wasn't even born then, he's only like 30 when the story starts. alan rickman was just way too old for the actual role, even if he was the best casting by far
Alan Rickman was also a terrible casting choice
That is a perfectly rational observation and the worst part is, you can't voice it in normal conversation without being treated like a retard. Then the other side of the normiesphere, who might understand (doubtful) but at least agree, don't give a fuck about harry potter anyway.
Snape is supposed to be ugly and completely devoid of charisma. Rickman is very handsome and extremely charismatic. It doesn't work.
Ron
Spot on
Hermione
Eh a little dark but I see it
Harry
What the FUCK
he wasn't even born then
Harry potter is 11 in book one and it was the mid 90s. so roughly 11 years ago the potters had him. they were probably in their 20s earlier than the mid 80s because they had to graduate Hogwarts first which probably happened in the 70s so they were probaly little kids in the early 60s. Its still a fucking stretch.
They've only cast four professors, including Snape.
Harry looks like Harry? Dark hair, light eyes, slim.
Yeah lily, james and presumably snape, were born in 1960. Just barely boomers. Going entirely by the movie This is England I will assume that it's plausible for a white girl and a Jamaican immigrant boy to have been secret friends in the late 60s. Once they get to Hogwarts we have to assume muggle racism becomes irrelevant
He looks good enough if you were making Harry in sims 1
Harry is born in 1980, Lily and James are about 20-21 at that time, so born circa 1960
He just looks... ordinary. Young Radcliffe was cast because he had this waif-like haunted look to him, Columbus or Rowling (I think it was Columbus) said something to that effect. You could buy that he had an unhappy childhood and was the chosen one or whatever. He made wearing glasses look cool.
This kid though? He looks like a background character
Rickman is very handsome
in Harry Potter? anon you're telling us a lot about yourself right now
Headshots don't tell me that much, you need to see them in costume with hair and makeup. They'd better not just reuse the look of the uniforms in the films, we could do with a more robed look in general for the kids without the Muggle clothes (except at the holidays where they do wear them).
Anon, two entire generations of women grew up wanting to fuck him, what are you smoking
Yes, you moron.
well give him a chance, you're looking at a headshot from a talent agency, not exactly him as Harry
Honestly wish they had just made it an animated series.
Yeah, quite handsome. He always was very dashing, both in his youth and when he was older. Women did not fall in love with the book Snape with his greasy hair and hook nose, they fell in love with Rickman with his deep voice and screen presence.
They'd better not just reuse the look of the uniforms in the films
The show would be dead on arrival then because half of the global fans only really cared about the cute uniforms, especially East Asia. For them the main draw was "magic boarding school with skirts and stockings and also, pointy hats". You could even compare HP to the magical battle academy genre in anime that was briefly popular in the mid-2010s
It's the personality and slick look that make him handsome. the should have made his out fit less stylish, dirty, covered in dandruff ect. The series in general made the Wizards clothing much more fashionable than they should have been. This is especially wrong when they're in muggle clothes. In the book, if a pure blood wizard had to go to muggle london they dressed like retards because they didn't know any better.
>What were your expectations for HBO's HP trio casting
White
Come on bro, you know they would raceswap them. Unless your expectations are completely ungrounded in reality.
I don't care who they cast because I knew they would fuck it up, it would flop, and I wasn't going to watch it anyway.
I don't know if he's conventionally handsome but Rickman did have that aura, a charismatic quality crafted by his voice and gestures. It also helped that he was "nicer" than book Snape, who was just a straight up bully. I simply have yet to see a black actor achieve a comparable effect in any movie or TV show
Old black guy in final destination movies?
God-Tier
Ayn Rand
I simply have yet to see a black actor achieve a comparable effect
Morgan Freeman
Denzel
Mahershamala ding dong was pretty good in Luke Cage and Green Book
The Hermione actress did a run on Matilda so she does have theater experience, I don't recall if Watson had any experience whatsoever.
case in point, the very first chapter of the series, from Vernon's POV when he notices an unusual amount of absolute weirdos in baffling outfits on the streets while going to work
Well shit, from this distance at certain angles she kinda looks like ten year old Emma
Going entirely by the movie This is England
Wasn't that also written by the adolescent guy?
give away the game four (later five) films early
Wizard KKK doesn't care about skin color tho, only whether the parents have magic or not. Even the movies had a black dude as a death eater (one of Draco's buddies).
Alan why are you doing that? It's not in the script
trust me I know something you don't
Snape was a teacher. You'd expect even a bad teacher to make an effort to protect his thirteen year-old students.
yeah he is an absolute ratfucker in the books, he still acts like a dick to a degree in the films, but they don't feature much of his bullying of students, favoritism of Slytherin, and clashes with Harry, which are all constant in the books. He's more just aloof and condescending in the films, with most of his nastiest moments absent
It's not a giveaway, any teacher or adult would do the same thing to protect kids.
I really liked that scene/small detail about his character.
True, but in the book he's unconscious during this whole scene, here he's present and immediately puts himself between a werewolf and the trio who just ambushed and KO'd him a few minutes ago.
I love the trope of your enemy having your back. It's such a strong feeling
That werewolf was spooky to kid me, it didn't look at all how I was expecting but it was much creepier than the book version.
Yeah, it's like "I might hate this guy, but it's the right thing to do". Speaks strongly to the convictions and morals of the person.
It's a nice insight into Snape's character that shows he isn't just the evil man Harry thinks he is. It shows depth.
I do hope they include more classroom scenes in the show, the actual school life part of the books was always comfy to me, like downtime between major plot scenes. The amount of points Harry and Ron lose for Gryffindor because of Snape over the six years they're there is comical, one or both of them get into something with him nearly every class that's featured.. Like Ron getting fed up with Malfoy making mocking gestures at them across the classroom and pelting a raw crocodile heart off his face and losing a good fifty points or something hefty, bits like that are worth including if you have the time.
I liked their werewolf design, I thought it was really good, better than the typical representation of really hairy, muscular men.
This is what I always wanted, a high quality huge budget animated adaptation. It would allow them to faithfully adapt all of the more fantastical elements in the books that were a little subdued if not regularly absent in the films, especially later, and the more colorful costumes and spells. There's a lot more casual magic when you read the books vs watch the films, lots of enchanted objects or locations that are static in the film.
Likewise, you don't have to worry about casting visually, only casting the best voice for everyone, and you can just design characters close to their book descriptions. It would be easy to have the kids age correctly over the presumably seven seasons, and even in an expensive animated series, production would be so much smaller in scale and less pricey than a live action version.
If I was making it, I'd take advantage of having all books available by cataloguing every single named student during Harry's time at Hogwarts, and designing all of them right at the beginning, at the appropriate age relative to Harry, and thus while you'll obviously have extras since there's hundreds of students Harry doesn't know or ever interact with, but in classes, at the House tables, in crowd shots, Common Rooms, Quidditch matches, etc, you can pepper in those named characters where appropriate every year Harry is there, even if they don't become characters he interacts with til way later, they're clearly there the whole time and not materializing out of nowhere in the seasons for Book 4 or 5 or 6. You know like House table shots in the Great Hall from Book 2 on can have Luna visible at it, etc. Same goes for characters outside of Hogwarts, but those visits are more sparing by Harry, and this would be more about building a sense of familiarity with the student body at Hogwarts so it starts to feel more like home to the viewer, even if they don't know everyone's names they become familiar
Alas, they're committed to the live action thing.
It's the spindly limbs, it drives home that it's a sickness.
The one good thing about the show format is that they will have time to show all the small worldbuilding details that the movies miss out on due to a lack of time.
Things like Fred and George shoving Montague into the Vanishing Cabinet to avoid punishment, and the poor kid was stuck there for days.
Or anything with Peeves, he was completely forgotten about in the movies.
Girl is cute, it is acceptable
now post Fenrir Greyback and that argument completely fails
A character from a different film with a different director and different intent?
movie from the same canon is actually NOT canon, bro!
I didn't mention canon. I said they were made for different films by different people with different intent.
The casting in general so far looks pretty good to me, which makes it funnier when you see Snape among the others. Just imagine if the show ends up being a perfect adaptation of the books, but then you have nigga Snape in the middle sticking out like a sore thumb.
Hate to say this but that pic makes me want to cooming mulattololi gangrapedoujin and start my morning gooning session
argument
It's not an argument. It's literally the intent behind the design, to evoke a deathly ill person that's gaunt and bony, like an AIDS victim or other disease.
yeah Snape feels like he comes from a different show, one of those ones that changes just about everyone according to a chart of minorities, like Wheel of Time. Then he's just surrounded by people who seem to be pretty close to the book descriptions.
I was honestly not expecting a blackwash of the main trio. I know everyone was doomposting for months but I thought they wouldn't do it.
aids kills you not gives you powers
Fake news sites were making easy bank off outrage clicks, they're gonna be mad Hermione isn't an ultra black African with an afro or whatever, they'd counted on milking it for years. I don't think you'll get much traction out of a little kid that's just mildly olive toned.
People will complain if the animation designs kept characters white or raceswapped them all the same
Then the more deranged will expect non-white characters to match their voice actor
It's just a matter of political will and not giving in to pressure
Im surprised they didnt replace the trio with retarded looking caveman gorilla babboon subhuman niggers.
Someone probably fought tooth and nail for this because none of them are chimpbfaced obese neanderthal bix nood buck tooth afro haired spear chuckers.
Its a downright miracle that they dont have stupid neon hair, face tattoos, squished noses or piercings.
Its a downright miracle that none of them are trans.
Makes sense hermione was supposed to be ugly in the books
All of them look like normal kids from a street. I really don't see them in memorable roles.
I thought they'd go full Ngubu for Hermione. This girl is barely tan.
I feel like they won't lighten her hair but they'd better. She has darker hair than new Harry.
If she does turn out to be non-white and not just less pale they better be smart about it, Mudblood now sounds racist in a way never intended, the whole house elves liberation thing etc. Dammit that bit was clearly a Karen/college soapbox activist thing and it just naturally screams white girl.
Let's ignore the mutt in the room for a few minutes. Why couldn't they get a kid with green eyes and black hair to play book accurate Harry? Most people I know with black hair have blue eyes and some have brown eyes, no one with green eyes, is it really that rare? Btw he doesn't even have either black hair or green eyes so they're both wrong
Mudblood works better with a brownie than a jet black nigger
Rickman is very handsome and extremely charismatic
I wouldn't call him conventionally handsome, however he does have a lot of charisma and screen presence. And it's much better than if the character was played by some "canon" ugly fuck with no charisma.
NTA but this is how he looked in die hard, he was just old and greasy in Harry Potter
Not racist. Just don't like her
Mudblood has fuck all to do with skin color so it works best with pale white
Let's be honest, this is not a face of a Chad Thundercock who easily slays women. Which proves that charisma and personality are just as strong as your looks.
That's what a conventionally attractive man looks like, idk what to tell you, what does a "Chad" look like?
they do. even has snape and a rule 63 ron succubis with green hair.
I doubt they will get the world building correct. the movies gave up even the clothing after what, 3 films? and already the casting is pure poc pandering garbage.
You have no idea how obsessed women are with this guy
I just hope they do Ron justice. Best book character and the movies butchered him.
Hermione is a poo
LMAO POTTERFAGS CAN'T STOP LOSING
not written by, he was starring as one of the skinheads. funnily enough he himself is mixed, his dad is half jamaican iirc
If they ginger genocided Ron like everyone thought they would, he would have been the cool black guy. Now he’s gonna be the dimwitted comic relief again.
They should have just kept the main characters white. They have SO MANY characters that play prominent roles in the books that didn't exist in the movies, that they could have cast whoever they wanted for those roles and no one would give a shit. People know these characters already and have a clear picture of what they look like in their heads. Fucking with that is so stupid, many people are not watching now purely because of casting, myself included and I actually like Harry Potter.
Liar
Oh yeah, they will fuck it up for sure, but it will be there instead of just being missed as the movies did, hence why the format is good.
She looks more MENA or even Hispanic
idc this isn't for my age group anymore
cancelled 2 seasons in
calling it
Arabella is a Greek name
all three of them look gay or retarded
Spot on. Fantasy robes + mundane anglo uniforms is the one visual icon of the franchise.
Hermione looks Greek. I’m fine with it it’s just Snape that’s the biggest offender.
Snape is one of those characters that if you race bend them you ruin it. You could have made Hagrid black though if you needed a DEI hire.
so you saying black people can't teach? fuck is wrong with you?
