The movies had to fit seven novels, that each take two-five days of near constant reading to finish, into eight two hour long films. Lot of things that made the books so enjoyable got cut in the movies. The show is supposedly going to rectify this. I doubt that it will, but that's the main reason for making it, more breathing room to explore the world and story that the movies couldn't do. They are also going to "fill in" some of the stories of the side characters, so the show writers get to "leave their mark" or "make it their own" or whatever.

they already made it a way bigger thing in the movie, in the book she doesn't even know what it means and Ron has to explain it to her and Harry.
In the movie she's almost in tears as if she has been persecuted and called a mudblood her entire life which doesn't even make sense since she had no interaction with the magic world until starting school and there's no indication of her or any other muggle born students getting bullied prior to that. Plus by year 2 Harry still hasn't even heard that word before so it can't be getting used much.
