As promised, I just watched this after watching Prometheus for the first time a couple days ago and dang. I know some people didn't like Prometheus very much either, but this one felt like a huge downgrade. It's not like Prometheus was the best movie I've ever seen or anything but Covenant made me appreciate it a lot more now that I see how much worse it can get. All the ambiguity and interesting themes thrown out the window in favor of a generic action movie and "the robot is just straight up evil now."
Between this and TLJ, I see 2017 was a pretty bad year for "movies that shat on the fans of the previous one."

Alien is a much more grown up franchise and doesn’t hold your hand through the movies as much as capeshit. I think if we had gotten the third movie with David, he’d be up there with movie villains like Darth Vader.
The human characters were so breathtakingly stupid in this it felt parodic, as if I was watching Scary Movie or something

yes, Prometheus actually had an old and rickety Giger working with them (there is a three hour making of that is pretty cool although looks like it was filmed on a potato) and everybody gave it their 100%
Covenant is horrendous, Scott got put into a corner and pressured to making a "real alien omg" movie
I couldn't finish "The Last Duel" even though I loved the premise, seemed to unite the worst part of some budget hallmark movie with low effort cgi
I'm pretty sure Dan O'Bannon made it, Ridley was just put there to hold the room together

Weird. I liked Covenant and hated Prometheus. They were both dogshit, though, and Prometheus was such a let down whereas I went into Covenant expecting nothing. I still enjoyed the viewing experience twice as much as Prometheus though, the movie was more of a fun Alien slop sequel like Resurrection which saved it for me.
Yep this shit was offensively bad, to the point that I didn't even pirate Romulus because fuck it at this point.
There are some cool comics that are miles better than any of the sequels. I recommend labyrinth.

I at least heard that Romulus is way better than Covenant, but I'm gonna let it percolate a bit before I try it. And it turned out to be one of the first Alien movies in years to not bomb hard and then they're making the show for FX so we can't escape Alien at this point, they're just gonna keep making them forever.

That was literally always the case. I didnt feel like the David we got in this movie was anything more than a natural progression from the one in the previous movie.
The setting has nothing to do with why I didn't watch it.
The best compliment I heard about Romulus is that it isn't AS bad as Covenant, but no one ever said it was even remotely good save for maybe a couple scenes.

i thought it was pretty solid just as a sci-fi movie. yea the crew acted pretty dumb (taking off their helmets, running in a straight line) but that's just standard horror/movie stuff. it added a lot to the Alien lore. it wasn't just a straight re-tread like everything after Aliens. it didn't cram in the same tired Alien tropes for the xth time (another chestburster scene. another skinny girl in a tank top depressuring a xeno out into space. Andy saying "get away from her you bitch" out of character because Ripley said it, except now he's saying it first.) it was very tense and scary at times.
i don't get the hate. i thought it was clearly one of the better Alien movies, and a pretty good sci-fi movie besides that.
except some campy quotes from Alien/Aliens and the final meme-monster and the male zoomers acting, Romulus is pretty solid

I don't hate Prometheus. I do, however, dislike that it felt the need to elucidate what Engineers are and thus removing the mystery.
Also, it's essentially just a remake of Alien; just like every movie after Alien: Resurrection.
I didn't think the running was even that bad in the context of the movie, everyone says "why didn't they run to the side" except Noomi Rapace's character literally did roll to the side and the thing still fell sideways on her, literally defeating the whole purpose of the criticism. She only survived by dumb luck because she coincidentally happened to be in the tiny crevice that didn't get smashed.

I used to consider this movie my dead last pick until I read a quote by either Giger or Scott, that one major intention of Alien was to make males specifically afraid by forcing them to experience rape, something they typically don't have to fear.
After rewatching covenant I realized this movie does something very similar to fans of the franchise: instead of experiencing the heroes win like they're accustomed, they're forced to experience their absolutely hopeless loss.
