It's because shortly before MoS there was a lawsuit from the estate of the original creators. They managed to essentially crack down on a deal that they were entitled to anything that was introduced in the original Action Comics NO 1 book. Which is why around that time the New 52 and MoS started making major changes to the costume such as body armour/dropping the trunks.
There was also a loophole that if WB had a Superman movie out by the time the deal was finalized, they could maintain any similarities in making sequels in perpetuity to that film. Which is why MoS got rushed out so quickly, why they hire a guy like Zack Snyder who wasn't too concerned by the undercooked script, and why the movie is largely a copy/paste of the plot of Superman 2.

The suit is still janky, but it's almost a guarantee that Martha made it for him out of his blankets from the rocket, so that might explain all the lines and shit; might've already been a part of the blanket design.

If it was made of simple cloth, like Reeves, i'd think so. But the suit is a biker suit made by Chinese in sweatshops. It screams manufacted bullshit made by big corporations. That's the problem with making every superhero suit some bike suit filled with random complicated lines.
It's only thick around the padded bits, which could've been sewn in by an over-protective mother. When you see it up close you can tell it looks cottony or spandexy rather than like leather or something. I could easily see this being stitch job of some lady with her sewing machine. Same as Pfeiffer's Catwoman albeit with different material.
