In some genres, video games surpassed movies as a medium decades ago. Action. Horror. Adventure. Games are far more exciting than movies in these genres. Movies are still a better storytelling medium. So drama, comedy, tragedy, romance, genres like this are better served by a movie.

Some genres like sci fi and historical I don't know. I'd say movies and games are equally good at representing those genres, depending on the goal of the artist.

You can tell amazing stories in videogames, the interactivety allows you to do some pretty unique things and to also put the player in a story and make them directly responsible for things that happen, it can make a story much more impactful. Sadly barely any devs really know or care how to truly utilise the potential of the medium for art and storytelling. Just having a lot of cutscenes and section where you walk slow and characters start talking is very far from using the full power of the medium but people nowadays seem to think that is enough to make a videogame story serious and artistic. It is not, just make a fucking TV show if that is what you're doing.

But yeah if you really start to think about what it truly is and what it represents, it is completely shallow and insincere, but actually watching it is very very far from a miserable experience.
