I think they tried it too early in 4 with Renner. It was offputting at the time so I'm glad they didn't anymore. I like this dynamic and don't want some stupid hat transition like in Indy 4.

Because the first one was probably the worst "well-made" movie I've ever seen. Outside of the action scenes it was a complete farce. And this is a Part 2 of it. They also killed Ilsa which is the only reason people watch these movies.

short answer, it became too repetitive, the plot too convoluted and the final villains, the evil AI and gabriel, are terrible so people moved on.
more detailed, the cast got too big, it kills the pacing whenever the MI group is not onscreen, ethan became someone very close to a gary stu, everyone praising him, talking about him as if he was the best agent in the world, always kept winning and never had to overcome failure, even his fight scenes got too easy for him. tom cruise's stunts became detrimental to the movie, because they go on for too long, they don't fit in the direction of the movie, since they need to be filmed using different equipment and non traditional angles, and ultimately nothing of consequence happens to him, so it comes off more as a complete vanity project than as an actual movie.
