Detectorists

Probably one of the best series I've watched in years. I've just finished the second season and it's a bona fide 10/10.

Probably the most intelligent writing I can point to in the current television landscape. Primarily because it never tries to present itself as smart in any capacity, in fact it rather does the opposite. Superb acting especially from Jones. The country music is extremely comfy and sets the scene well. The way they thematically tie metal detecting and relationships together is obvious enough to be impressive and not overt enough to be annoying. It is insane to me that this is Gareth from the Office or Pirates of the Carribean. Yes, Jones definitely deserves all the praise, but how tf has this dude not even been nominated for an acting award here?

I know I sound like I'm sucking this show off, but I'm just blown away. I thought I'd see everything. Why didn't you guys tell me about this?

They're no nuggetnoggin or aquachigger...

pozz status?

The series received praise for its authentic portrayal of "a gentler side to maleness and male bonding"

*3 pointers it into the trash*

I liked it except for the movie special they did after the series. Thought it kind of ruined things. I'd suggest not watching it.

I saw that there was 2 specials? One of them is a Christmas special that aired right after Season 2? And the other is a 2022 one...

I'll probably watch the Christmas special right now and then move on to Season 3. But it's a shame to hear the 2022 movie sucks... I was lowkey hopeful this maybe gonna stay alive.

Oh well, hopefully it concludes well in the last season then.

If you're asking how many black characters are in it, the answer is none. There is one English Indian side character that doesn't speak and gets made fun of for being young. But no, I wouldn't call it "pozzed".

I don't care about there being black people or not. I see the show came out 10 years ago and is mostly the work of 1 person so it escaped the pozzing by committee approach I guess.

It isn't pozzed m8. It's a slow moving country town comedy that unfolds at a very satisfying pace and is well written.

I think im gonna give it a shot anon. Thanks for the recommendation

Detectorists was great! Any other non-pozzed under-the-radar comfy shows like that? Doesn't have to be from the UK, but I think they did have others like Doc Martin for example

you can understand why people have media fatigue/PTSD from all the propaganda we've been force fed.
anons are extra vigilant to not be lead down slop ally

Especially modern UK shows seem to be over the top checking every box. Feel sorry for young UK kino lovers. Maybe they can get their fix on YT or something.

Maybe they can get their fix on YT or something.

I bet you the algorithms are geotargetted and curated as well, by some Quango.
So what you think is a "free internet" is just the Chinese Firewall mixed in with a Clockwork Orange feed.
But your agency feels free!

Just finished the Christmas special and I would consider it essential viewing before Season 3. There's important story info in there actually no idea why it's a special.

I'm gonna finish Season 3 today I reckon since I have the day off, I'll probably watch the 2022 movie and make another thread tomorrow or some other time. I hope it's not terrible like you're insinuating.

Yeah fair enough. Unless the 3rd season is some sharp u-turn, it isn't at all, and in any case I'd just denounce it and just stick to the first 2 seasons which are brilliant

thanks anon for the directions.

4K AI remaster

wtf they better not have ruined the comfyness

The final episode of season 1 is one of the best feeling moments in television history. I also consider it a perfect tv show. It's kind of sad when it ends and yet it lasts the perfect amount of time.

It even has a spooky period with that stranger. No spoilers.

A perfect tv show.

Probably the most intelligent writing I can point to in the current television landscape. Primarily because it never tries to present itself as smart in any capacity, in fact it rather does the opposite.

Oh it's self-deprecation slop. You are clearly one of those schizos who freaks out about "pseuds" and the concept of "film as an art form". You think it's the epitome of heckin intelligence to be self-deprecating about the intellectualism of your show.

No thanks.

What.

The final episode of season 1 is one of the best feeling moments in television history

For me that was the Season 2 finale lol... I didn't cry but I did feel quite overwhelmed with emotion. To me, that entire final sequence before the credits roll is exactly what magic realism actually is... not the drug trippy shit people always peddle nowadays, but more this sustained moment of the universe clicking together that feels totally plausible and equally impossible. Stuff like hearing the horses is kind of bonechilling because it taps into this indescribable feeling that everyone has surely experienced in some form or another when things just miraculously go your way. It was extremely uplifting.

I really liked the moments where the girls sit in the grass and be girly while the fellas keep at it detecting. Such wholesome gender affirming tv.

Nah it's not self-deprecating at all, it's just incredibly humble. Also nah to whatever the second point you were trying to make was... you started an argument with yourself lmao

the way they approached anything even remotely politically sensitive was so refreshing, not that it's remotely a focal point of the show but there's just an open air of honesty about how they treat boys and girls, different working classes, different age groups etc... I love that it's not ironic or meanspirited either, when the characters make fun of each other it always feels like wholesome banter

Watch this next anon!

I actually watched this before finding Detectorists. It is very funny, but not nearly as good imo. They definitely feel like they are from different generations.

The pharmaceuticals, either start or stop

Detectorists is kino of the highest order. A new kind of comedy. More humorous than laugh out loud and the characters are all relatable. Even Andy's gf isn't that bad.
First 2 seasons are the best. 3rd is very good, but they couldn't bring back Sophie for some reason and she was a great character. The first Christmas special takes places after season 2 and it's also very good. But the 2nd Christmas special that takes place after season 3? Putridly bad. Characters act out of character, and the main antagonists that they made up with at the very end of s3 are now the main antagonists again.

It's basically Napoleon Dynamite but the people aren't grotesque.

For me that was the Season 2 finale lol.

I agree. They could have just ended it there. The special after it was more like an epilogue. And season 3 was good, but them making nice with Simon and Garfunkel was pretty great. It was a true happy ending....then the special after that ruined it.

It's basically Napoleon Dynamite but the people aren't grotesque.

?

English people

not grotesque

Oh this just made me realize I might have misremembered season 1 for 2, So yeah season 2. Hears the horses and stuff. Best moment in tv history.

Kind of true in that there are multiple redemption arcs. Kip, napoleon and uncle all winning in some way by the end. Pedro too.

Why didn't you guys tell me about this?

I mentioned it when it was airing several years ago.
It's excellent.

pozz status?

They say the Nazis were bad.

Toby Jones is a little grotesque. That guy is so damn small it is difficult to look at him.

literally never heard of this. how?

EVIL GOLD

I'm not the anti-intellectualist schizo who can't deal with sincerity and needs everything to be self-deprecating about how stupid they are.

No thanks.

Mackenzie Crook seems like he has a talent for that stuff. Slightly spooky English country folklore vibes. My nephew was watching his Worzel Gummidge remake and he even managed to sneak a bit of it in there. I'd love to see him do something properly supernatural or horror.
