lived a miserable boring wageslave life
literally cleaning toilets every morning at 6 am
had no wife or children or family
small shitty 1-room studio apartment
zero future prospects
Why was he so happy?
lived a miserable boring wageslave life
literally cleaning toilets every morning at 6 am
had no wife or children or family
small shitty 1-room studio apartment
zero future prospects
Why was he so happy?
he lived in a country that respects itself and its citizens
communism is the final form of civilization
he didn't look so happy in the final scene
What’s wrong with that
normal happy people often start sobbing uncontrollably, true
Let me guess you need more?
What other movies that follow people doing mundane thing? something relaxing and comfy about it.
thats chinks mentality they are like robots with no emotions
spends all day in women's bathroom sniffing the seats
seems pretty obvious
t. have not watched the movie
You can call this bugman anything you want, but he did not lack emotions.
Sounds like a Sisyphean thing.
Is that that Soljienitzhyn book?
he was happy because he lived in japan
are you guys forgetting about japan's super high suicide rates and how everyone is depressed and lonely?
what is even the point of dumb racist Americans to watch foreign movies especially art house ones???
cleaning toilets in japan affords you a better life than being an engineer in most of the world
boohoo I don't have le wife and le keedz
yes they are doing that.
You wouldn’t get it, it’s very zen.
There is no gulag in the movie so I'm assuming no.
zero future prospects
what are your future prospects OP?
don't worry they'll get culturally enriched soon enough
The two people who actually watched the movie
I watched the movie and I know he wasn't really perfectly happy but I still wish I was him. I wish I could make a living doing tangible work. I need to escape computers.
Why was he so happy?
it was a fake happiness, couldn't you see it?
what do you do then
nooooooooo you have to slave for goldberg and climb the corporate ladder that constantly keeps you under its thumb to be happy!!
The scene with his sister implies that he was from a rich and successful family with good jobs. Why did he leave all that to clean toilets?
Because he wanted to insulate himself from reality by doing a job with no real responsibility. Its the kind of thing that would occur to you if you watched the movie without your phone in your hand.
It's supposed to be ambiguous. He could be crying in joy at reuniting with his family, however brief.
No need to be a downer it's an open question. This movie really seems to have hit a deep nerve with you and you hate this character and what he does so you interpret everything he does in that way. You are a hateful sad person.
I thought the father was an abuser or some shit, his sister says something along the lines of
He doesn't act that way anymore
But yeah escapism and enjoying the little things in life.
I'm not a hateful sad person but i'm perplexed by how almost everyone who sees this movie thinks its sincerely advocating some kind of zen minimalist lifestyle when its doing the exact opposite. Drives me mad honestly. Didn't mean to take it out on you.
He was experiencing a wide range of emotions.
It’s saying you should find happiness in small, simple things in life that enable you to feel joy and peace. Not chase after money and status. Cleaning toilets isn’t prestigious work but to him it is performing a humble function that he can feel pride about when he does it well because it is a service to all the people who use the bathroom. His simple life is how he can enjoy things unlike in his old life.
Once japan goes that's literally it for higher civilization
you could literally go and get a job laying bricks today and be paid well
But its 100% cope. Civilians sneer at him and he smiles like it doesn't bother him. He listens to happy music to remain in a fictional world all day. He's too scared to pursue a relationship with a woman he likes. The film couldn't be any clearer on this, it even shows his hazy dark dreams to indicate he's not sleeping well.
his hazy dark dreams to indicate he's not sleeping well.
dreams of light filtering through trees, his favorite thing
He's too scared to pursue a relationship with a woman he likes.
this is not implied anywhere since we never see him speak to anyone, its not expected that he should be in any relationship
Because it's not a real movie.
i dont think its even that he just is free of the obligations placed upon him
It was an attempt by a specific tribe to promote the ideal that being a wage slave golem cattle and having no family or wealth is a good honnerable thing gaijin goy. You will own nothing, but they strangely still will, and you will be happy.
The girl on the bench or Mama in the bar.
I want to pay to see this film
The perfect boomer fantasy
How do you explain Wenders making a whole trilogy plus Paris, Texas to illustrate the joys of raising children then retard
But its 100% cope.
You may interpret it that way but nothing
Civilians sneer at him and he smiles like it doesn't bother him.
Because it doesn’t. He doesn’t seek compliments or wish customers to smile at him. That is immaterial and irrelevant. He finds satisfaction in doing his work well and providing useful service to everyone using the bathrooms by maintaining them impeccably. That is the reward in itself.
He listens to happy music to remain in a fictional world all day.
He enjoys music because it is a source of joy. Like everything else in his life it is a simple pleasure. Music moves him and that is why it is a constant aspect of his daily life.
He's too scared to pursue a relationship with a woman he likes.
Your misreading his relationship with the bar mama-san completely.
The film couldn't be any clearer on this, it even shows his hazy dark dreams to indicate he's not sleeping well.
The dreams are about the trees he loves.
Chasing after money and status will not make you happy. He was a slave to his status and wealth and it made him hollow inside, incapable of being happy.
dude isn't the whole point of the movie him being a retard incel cost him his life, as illustrated by him losing his shit as soon as his comfy routine is interrupted and being confronted with the fact he's an old lonely idiot who's not brave enough to ask his waifu out?
The "next time is next time, now is now" scene is portrayed as nice zen attitude at first glance, but then you realize he's just scared of taking a 2 hour train to the beach with his niece because it's too far removed from his comfortable little world.
I guess the most positive thing you can get out of it is that you can still enjoy a simple life, but all choices entail a sacrifice.
you are arguing like a hormone riddled woman, there's no expectation that he enjoys relationships, he tolerates his co-worker and niece and barely speaks to the guys at the bar on sunday, this is not america where you are expected to ask everyone in a dress out like some sex starved addict, oh woe is me my life is falling apart because i can't consoom on my soulless date, i need to buy her dinner flowers, a diamond and the ultimate relationship consumption price, a 500k mortgage, whatever shall i do?
Whats the next movie in the trilogy going to be about, a man happily pilots a ship as it delivers hordes of brown skinned fighting age sharia males onto the beaches of Japan and he reflects on his privilege?

read camus
More like CamASS
which book
He's autistic. Simple as. You can't judge him by human rules.
You just don't want to judge him because you're a weeb you transparent faggot
this is not america where you are expected to ask everyone in a dress out like some sex starved addict
Good for you? I'm not American. I don't know where you live where being afraid to talk to a woman is some kind of positive. Sorry if it offends you that he's a incel but that his fault so be mad at him.
the myth of sisyphus
Didn't deny being a hormone riddled woman. How curious.
sorry that the film about incels lives rent free in your head
good gaijan, scrybbo my shittu
Oh I takuuu picturooo very happy gaijian san
*Bows*
He’s reflecting on his conversation with the terminally ill salary man. Because he’s about the same age. He knows that, just like the salary man, he has only so many days left. Yet it doesn’t make him throw his hands up and give up. The scarcity imbues his remaining days with meaning. In spite of his troubled family past, his mundane life, his uncertain future, it’s a new dawn. It’s a new day. And he’s feeling good
lived a miserable boring wageslave life
That still allowed him to live independently and have free time for hobbies.
literally cleaning toilets every morning at 6 am
He finished early with plenty of time to read, go to bars, listen to music, fo his photography
had no wife or children or family
Good. No leaches taking up his time and money.
small shitty 1-room studio apartment
More than you can get in most other developed nations right now.
zero future prospects
Just like most Americans, then,
I wish I could live on my own in some nice little apartment with a low-effort wage job and just relax on the weekend with my hobbies, but all the sub-human jeets being imported as cheap labor by the jews have made that impossible.
Hidden backstory is that he was rich before, but he had a meltdown and decided to fuck off and live a simple life. That's why he has no problem with his newfound frugality -- he's already had it all before, and there's no indication he won't go back to his previous life.
Anon Babble posters really can't analyse film at all. Everything has to be filtered through some political lens with you lot.
just find a 99% white nordic countries?
so he scrubs shitters and the hos give him zero pussy sounds like a moral lesson is in here somewhere
All Nordic countries are pozzed to hell and back.
Most of the time these faggots here see art as some subliminal instruction to do something and nothing else. Legit autistic mindset necessitating complete alignment with their own values; otherwise, it's either jew propaganda or a cautionary tale.
Why did his niece film the girl walking into the bathroom? A girl walks into a bathroom, gives a disgusted look at Hirayama, then walks in after he leaves it. It’s a quick scene but it confused the fuck out of me. I guess to show her mom what he is doing for a job?
Anyway I liked it. I thought maybe he autistically took pictures to help his memory since his dad had dementia.
Rice slop
NOOO HE NEEDS TO BE SLAVING FOR MONEY AND LIVE A MATERIALISTIC LIFE!!!
Americans really can't imagine someone living a life that's not just about social status and materialistic things?
He doesn’t even know what Spotify is, what a weirdo!
Cleaning toilets is an honest job that provides a useful service
Yes, it's also basic labor that could be done by anyone with a pulse. A job meant for teenagers to pay for their gas.
he has time for hobbies
Like what? It's not like he has to slave away because he's a struggling artist.
A man who doesn't want to challenge himself, physically and intelectually, is a man who has no self respect.
but he's le happy XD
Yeah, so are actual retards. You faggots would pick a lobotomy over doing any actual work to improve your lives.
He is slaving, one of the worst possible jobs too
Office jobs that make most jobs of the world right now can all be replaced by jeets or AI. Being a cleaner is unironically more useful and demanding than being an office drone
What is a "real" job then?
If you're not trolling you are a sociopath
My dad is actually living a pretty similar life. Sold his business a few years back, was retired for a year but got bored so now he has a cleaner job where he works a couple hours a day and then goes to the beach and surfs for the rest of the day. It's honestly pretty based and he's the happiest he's ever been
The American two party system as irreparably destroyed some peoples' capacity of thinking beyond black and white. He is not entirely happy, he is not entirely depressed. His philosophy is focusing on the now, absorbing and internalizing the beauty (or sorrow) in the present moment. His love for nature reflects and supports this idea, his plants in constant growth, never the same, never eternalized, the purpose being in watching the beauty of them everyday, enjoying it, knowing that tomorrow they will have morphed further never to be the same. The light penetrating through the tree beanches always unique, the sun is not where it was yesterday, the wind blowing harder or softer. He photographs these moments and stores them in a box not in an effort to not let go of the past, but to commemorate and give value to the unique beauty hidden in every moment.
It's not an example of an irresponsible man (he is extremely responsible) who doesn't give a fuck about his future, his legacy or his social status. It's an example of a man who finds happiness where most other don't, making him an outcast. People have difficulty comprehending someone who doesn't value or find joy from the same things, and tipically shun them as a result, thus the looks of disgust and disrespect some people give our character. Ironically (or maybe intentionally) a lot of people who watch the movie treat him with the same disrespect, projecting onto the character their own ideas of happiness and fullfilment, judging him for living a "lie" because no toilet cleaner can be happy. These are the people who throw him looks of disgust.
He is not the happiest person, but he doesn't want to be. He has no secret, no end all be all philosophy for life or the secret for fullfilment. He is just a guy. The problem is people analysing movies through their own lense, instead of the character's.
I literally can't stand movies like this. Makes me SEETHE.
I watched the movie in my work attire
It was a meta experience. And it was interesting because earlier I had watched the boring Dune 2
Movies women will never understand.
when will japan make exciting movies again like battle royale?
AOI UMI MO
So he's a passive observer of "beauty", that's it. That's all he does. He blends in with the other billions of people who'll be forgotten the second they die. A man of zero worth.
wah, wah, racism ;_;
the movie is just a hallucination from his fentanyl suicide attempt he wasnt happy
very insightful post
No, he's an important member of society. A person like him is more scarce, virtuous and necessary than a majority of rich people, which a large portion of the population will automatically assume are important just because of their wealth. It's not the point of the movie though. Is your worth dictated entirely by other people's perception of you? Do you stop having worth when the last person who remembers you dies? Should you dedicate your life to insert yourself into someone else's idea of worth? No one can give you an answer for those questions, and if they say they can, they are a liar. The difference is, the character clearly doesn't give a shit about those same questions, he's not concerned with that. He has his own issues and struggles, as all of us do, but he is not dependant on other people to feel the best life has to offer. That's probably the most one could learn from this movie.
This.
reliable, decent paycheck for low stress easy labor
cozy affordable housing in a safe, clean city
I'd take hookers, and a niece I sometimes see, over a wife/daughter I have to constantly provide for and protect living paycheck to paycheck in niggerville, USA any day.
Was he gay?
reliable, decent paycheck
Was it though? He gave his coworker like 100$ for clubbing (equivalent of that cassette tape he didn't want to pawn of) and acted like he was giving away this month's rent.
It's implied he used to work a great job, but decided to close himself off in a sheltered world where he controls every minor thing. He was so tired of feeling and experiencing life that he started deluding himself with fake happiness. Meeting the salary-man who didn't have anytime left made him realize that closing himself off for how many years he was doing so was a waste of time. He cries because he regrets the time he wasted hiding from the world, but knows now that he wants to live.
cleaning toilets :(
cleaning toilets, japan :O
Being one paycheck away from homelessness won't make you happy either.
Without office buildings, there would be lower demand for cleaners.
guy probably has a trust fund from his rich sister, why does this film trigger the american wagie lmao, it's almost like having a mental block you can't overcome
Why was he so happy?
-He broke down when his sister saw how his life had turned out.
-He broke down again at the end of the movie.
All of this just to cope with the fact that you're a lesser being
Japanese are the kings of down to earth slice of life movies.
Check out Koreeda.
Why did he leave all that to clean toilets?
It doesn't matter.
And if you're tearing your hair out trying to figure it out, you're not going to make it.
This guy actually gets it.
Do you have any idea how expensive it is to rent a place, by yourself, in Koto City, Tokyo?
That would completely ruin the movie. Some rich dude larping as a janitor to feel what it's like to be poor.
guy probably has a trust fund from his rich sister
This doesn't answer the question of why he was so hesitant of give a hundred if couldn't give less of a fuck about about the money.
Holy shit, autismo. I was talking about how much the job pays. Who even brought up US here?
yes, anyone who is responsible would be hesitant to give money for clubbing to an adult
He envied other people's happiness.
Just because he's not obsessed with money and content with less than others doesn't mean he doesn't need, or could use, some of it enough to recognize waste. $100 to do some stupid shit he doesn't appreciate like clubbing. May as well be giving him $10,000 to buy a big gumball or hawk tuah coins; just take the $100 out of his pocket and set it on fire.
