The game was definitely a mistake and, even if it made money, was a total failure for the company and franchise. It, and the Last of Us franchise as a whole, has totally tanked Naughty Dogs reputation. Even if people liked TLOU2, the fact they keep remaking and re-releasing the same two games over and over is laughable considering how many quality franchises they could work with. It's also one of the most embarrassing games ever made just because of Druckmann sniffing his own farts about it and creating a self-insert lookalike of himself that fucks the muscular woman up the ass. The ending itself destroys the game entirely. Going across the entire country, killing countless people you never met before to get the person that killed your dad then choosing NOT to kill them because revenge is le bad, then going home and everyone you know moved out so you're alone again. There's no lesson there. It would have worked if she went through with her revenge, killed Abby, then got back and everyone was gone. That would have actually shown the price of seeking revenge. But the way the story is, she doesn't even get her revenge so it means nothing. She kills a ton of people that did nothing to her, spares the one person that DID do something to her, then goes home to no one and plays guitar. Shitty ending and you know Druckmann was cumming and crying while he wrote it thinking this was his magnum opus. Again, embarrassing.

Another issue is Part II took away the ambiguous ending of the first game.
That was a big reason a lot of fans didn't even want a sequel. Maybe if they made a sequel that was universally acclaimed, but it's safe to say Part II was divisive in it's reception.

I think the ending was supposed to be more about Ellie saving Lev than it was about sparing Abby. Lev needed Abby the way Ellie used to need Joel.
So Lev is analogous to Ellie, and Abby is analogous to Joel.
Abby being a ruthless killer, but also a protector
Lev being more kind hearted and less jaded. Lev got Abby to spare Dina.
So in a way Ellie was saving herself by letting Abby live to protect Lev or something.
Not defending it or anything. I think revisiting TLOU as a revenge story was a mistake. Nothing interesting or profound happened at the end of Part II that hasn't been covered in some other revenge story

It's a cautionary revenge story that flips the gamey parts of shooters on its head (killing hundreds of anonymous enemies) and explores what the implications of this would be irl. Also I'm pretty sure because Druckmann is making commentary on the israel palestine conflict in which both sides are constantly radicalizing the other into a death spiral of revenge. Oh and the characters are gay and ethnically ambiguous and female so chuds basically blew a gasket.
