Would they really hire somebody who was way overqualified for the job in the early 2000's?

Would they really hire somebody who was way overqualified for the job in the early 2000's?

Because they had no open positions that required high qualifications.

Can't say for sure. I'd lost my first job at around 20 after working for 2 years, and then I applied at a car wash just to get some cash coming in.
Manager was nice enough to sit me down in his office and basically tell me

I get money to hire kids fresh out of HS and guys on parole and probation, you're overqualified and I'm not hiring you, sorry.

But fast food is probably different, idk.

In the year 2000 people were shocked that a 42 year old man would work in fast food

Nowadays every single restaurant has at least one guy in his 40s working there

Man, the world really went to shit.

why did gen x hate cushy office jobs so much?

man in his 40s

and

white college-educated man in his 40s with a wife and kids

are not the same thing.

because there are too many vacancies already. People just don't want to work anymore, so they take whoever comes by. Have you noticed how every restaurant you eat at has a sign saying: "We're hiring for positions x,y, and z"?

When I was 18 I remember applying to at least 20 different wagie jobs such as McDonalds and supermarket without success. I altered my education so it looked like I failed the uk 18yo exams and said something like I was looking for something to do while I considered what I wanted to do no next.

Literally the first time I did it I got the job, and when I told the manager I did better than expected and would be going to uni he got stroppy and said he wouldn't have hired me if he knew. They definitely filter out the people who are more likely to move on e.g. good education or history of good jobs.

People just don't want to work anymore

boomer lies

I have a 15 years of work in IT. I wanted a second cleaning job to earn some more cash for 6 months. It was so fucking hard getting an interview, imagine being a cleaning supervisor, reading a CV where the first job is about designing computer networks.

Zoomers are dedicated to working at not working.

boomer shithead tells you about his privileged scam and you think he was being "nice"

kek.

In truth it's the opposite. So many people are working that there's no one to work the shit jobs.

there's no one to work the shit jobs.

well immigrants will gladly work the shit jobs but then you guys get mad at them for doing so

It was a different time, you were most likely still a gleam in daddy's eye.

bc the economy is so fucked everyone has to work now

Only people who have never had one themselves say this

we cant hire you because youre overqualified

What? Is this an actual thing?

nah you're just one of those slightly older millennials who eats up every ounce of horseshit that boomers drop, probably a late 80's birth. my first girlfriend was like that and now she has a half brown baby.

Yes. I got denied from a vocational education program because I have a university degree. The retired teacher boomer running it literally asked me "what are you doing here?" when I was being interviewed, because he is living in 20 years ago land where any dumb degree guaranteed you a decent white collar job.

I ultimately ended up getting the decent white collar job, but it took fuckloads of effort beyond just having the piece of paper.

Congrats on your wife's daughter.

Yes. For a bottom-rung wageslave mcjob they want someone who they can push around because the threat of losing the meager pay would substantially fuck up their life.
If you’ve built a career and know what you’re worth and have assets and other skills to fall back on they know you won’t take nearly as much crap as a teenager or felon. You’ll start putting conditions on what they can task you with and your schedule and they can’t have that. They literally just want a warm body who can carry shit, perform basic customer service, and do everything their supervisor says.

Yes. You're not even allowed to be above-average intelligence to be a police officer.

Not for service crap like fast food, retail or cashiers, but it definitely exists for white collar work

Doesnt this give you grounds to sue? Or is there a law that explicitly says you can reject an interviewee for being overqualified?

Doesnt this give you grounds to sue?

Did you miss that the policeman in that instance literally did sue and was unsuccessful?

Nope, because muh private business has the right to hire fire and conduct business how they see fit blah blah blah.

Freedom of association says I don't have to hire someone who's going to leave in 2 months

They use that excuse all the time. It happened to me when I was being interviewed for my first job at Panera years ago. I was pursuing an IR degree and already had some foreign language shit under my belt at the time, so she said I seemed overqualified for the role.

We don't have freedom of association I'm America

It's pretty obvious why they don't want police officers to be too intelligent, because they need them to obediently follow orders, and people with high IQ aren't going to follow stupid orders, they're actually going to think for themselves, which isn't allowed.

Do they just think you’ll eventually request more money that you’re worth or what? I don’t get the “overqualified” shit

No, they think the unemployed nuclear engineer is going to leave the moment he gets a call back for a real job and they'll have to go through the hiring and training process again.

Yeah no shit they want to hire someone who might stay for 5yrs. It's a pain in the ass finding good workers and at those jobs they get trained on the job which means you're paying them for nothing until they learn and get good which could be 6months or more so of course you don't want the smart well presented dude to fuck off back to college

These faggots are just being dramatic

welcome to flippy dippy, can i take your order?

yeah... i'll take the wungo burger with marathon flippy fries

Do americans really?

Sadly yes.

Hollywood always shows adults working at fast food restaurants working the fries or making the sandwiches during the day. In real life, adults would be working the night shift then helping out with closing the store doing stuff like filtering the fryers, cleaning the ventilation stuff above the broiler, breaking down the broiler so the dishwasher can wash the parts while the guy cleans the broiler, dumping soapy water on the floor, then brushing the floors, then mopping the floor, etc.

If they want some comedy, they can show the closer messing up and getting some hot oil from the fryers on him, giving him 1st degree burns or accidentally spilling the fryer oil onto the floor, or falling off a ladder as he tries to clean the ventilation thing above the broiler.

Oh wait, to answer your question, they would probably hire him as a manager after they put him through working as a food handler first. Basically as a manager or assistant manager, he would be doing stuff like taking the temperature of the meat and logging in the records, counting the bags of fries used, the number of burger patties, recording the waste accumulated, entering numbers on a computer, testing the sanitation water with those strips of chemical paper, stuff like that. Also training the new hires.

I have no idea. But there was the one scene in Mad Men where some guy in the office was riding around in a golf car or something and then he ran over some coworker's feet, injuring him in the process. Must be hell working in a office. Upside to working in fast food is the repetition makes the job easy, eventually.

Fast food jobs can be part time jobs for college students and high school students. Just work on the weekends while you go to school during the week.

It's a bullshit excuse that means they don't trust you or like you

Not for service crap like fast food, retail or cashiers

Been out of work since January and have given up and tried for these positions. I have been getting a few of the "You're overqualified sorry" which I started hitting back with "So you're saying I'm the best candidate and despite willing to work under the agreed upon conditions and salary it's a problem because?" and they've all pussied out and either hung up or tried some bull shit "well I guess you sure know better and should have no problem finding something better" but one bitch kinda got me with a "if you can't accept no and have that kinda attitude you definitely don't have the capacity to work here" which I replied with "yeah sounds like you need a brainless slave with no self worth". I'm thinking I might've had my email black listed or some shit because of this. I can't even get the lowest of the low to give me the time of day.
