They don't make kinos like this anymore.
They don't make kinos like this anymore
What's with chuds glorifying war and violence so much?
isnt this the book that compares warfare to politics
Lmao imagine wasting money on this while Rakesh could make this with a fraction of that.
They've never experienced any violence or hardship in real life.
That road is obviously made with wide-tire offroad vehicles.
Ok this may sound stupid but why did they just line up unarmored men in cloth uniforms to stand there and just take the bullets straight to the face or lungs? Why did nobody thought of equipping the front line with a row of metal shields?
That's literally what ancient arbalests did during a siege, they wore pavises (huge ass shields) on their back which they turned to the enemy while they were reloading their crossbows.
It's ok when white people do it but when blacks and browns do it le society is collapsing !
Childish power fantasies of finally stepping up to their bullies.
THERE'S 40 SHILLINGS ON THE DRUM
metal shields
Canon balls
Cannister shot
Explosive canon balls
Grenades
line with a row of metal shields?
They would just dig trenches.
war
looting a dollar store and a Foot Locker
how do you expect 45kg men to carry 40kgs of metal
I get cannonballs, but they'd still repel bullets from their muskets.
I'm talking about the open field engagements where two armies would literally just walk up towards each other and gunning the others down. It's so fucking weird to me. Even ancient bowmen knew to move around the battlefield to avoid getting pelted by arrows.
War is the continuation of policy with other means
The only way this 7 hour movie series could/did get made was because of massive Soviet government and army investment, guided by the very gifted director Sergei Bondarchuk
It's definitely one of the best epics ever made, and because it cost so many resources it seems unthinkable that they'll ever be able to redo it without a government regime allocating massive resources just for a movie
It doesn't really glorify war/violence, if anything it shows the horrors of war as the napeolonic forces decimate the russian forces, find an empty victory, and then hemorrhage forces on their return. There is respect and appreciation among the soldiers, that they're basically just two sides of the same coin
It ends with the message:
"If evil men are linked with one another and are thereby made strong, then honest men, too, must do likewise. It’s as simple as that."
massive Soviet government and army investment
Isn't that the same for Waterloo? They loved funding war movies I guess
3–5 mm of steel would reliably stop an 18th-century musket ball (e.g., .50–.75 caliber, ~1,000–1,500 J energy). Thinner wrought iron (~4–6 mm) could also work but might dent.
Historical wooden pavises weighed 10–15 kg.
A 3 mm shield would weigh ~22 kg (more manageable but riskier vs. musket balls).
Apparently heavy oak shield would've also been effective to stop musket bullets.
Same reason they love playing female characters in video games. They love what they lack, in the context of war it's the guts to fight.
In a field battle a sheild large and thick enough to protect from bullets would be impractically heavy to carry in a fight. As well, infantry during this time were expected to carry all their gear and march between battles. Keep in mind infantry during this time were armed with swords and bayonets in addition to guns and could defeat a sheildman with those weapons. There are more reasons...
AI slop
friendly reminder that arbalests still had much higher casualty rates than regular troops, and that was against arrows. how do you think they would fare against bullets?
the odds of you getting hit in a napoleonic infantry line were still pretty low because guns were notoriously inaccurate, they had to shoot in lines of dozens of men to literally hit anything. speed, shot repetition and movement were more important to win a battle than increasing the individual survivability of soldiers. strapping a 100+ pound shield on everyones back wouldve made those infantrymen useless, and it doesnt even protect against artillery (the real battlefield killer, you had to outmaneuver before they could fire at you)
Yeah that's true. Both these movies just feel huge. I think this War and Peace movie seems mostly forgotten to time, but it's one of the best epics I've ever seen.
You really feel the size and the scale of the production, but whereas Waterloo is mainly battlefield porno, I think war and peace is more interesting because it has more interesting character developments set against the historic backdrop of the napoleonic

repel bullets from their muskets
yeah a 500 grain .69 caliber musket ball is going to go through you hammered iron armor and probably your body and the similarly armored guy behind you. you would need at least 1/4" thick steel to have any chance of stopping it. Try picking up some 1/4" steel plate and imagine wearing enough to cover the entire front of you. that's why they didn't wear armor.
same reason they didn't wear armor in ww2, except it would need to be 1/2" plate. no point
I'm not talking about armour, just shields. And as you can read here They wouldn't even have been that heavy to stop a musket bullet.
The only armies that continued using shields in the firearms era were in Japan, and that was mostly because arrows remained in common usage for a long time. They were as heavy as a man could carry on his back and deployed as fixed cover. They gradually fell out of use because they still weren't that effective, and canons/gattling guns penetrated them completely.
all the seething nigcels and browns itt
