Its the best looking prequel for this reason but also the story is legitimately intriguing and good. The strange Naboo betrayal plot with this geisha princess and the way Quigon almost jeopardizes everything because of this gifted boy, everything has this mysterious air. It feels like the beginning of an epic story. Episode 2 and 3 have their scope narrowed dramatically when it becomes a romance-gone-wrong story and Palpatine is simply handed power in front of all the jedi.

this essay sums it up perfectly. i think i'd also say it had the best sets and puppets/costumes of the trilogy: i'm not anti-CGI, but it was nice having a real Mos Whatever location. and fully CGI aliens were a groundbreaking new thing, by the second one it was just a given they could have monsters and even 'human' soldiers created in 3D.

plus Duel of the Fates is a 9/10 song, only surpassed by the love theme in Attack of the Clones.
