Either way it's still a cop out of a scene given that it is very clearly a reference to the Bernhard Goetz incident in NYC where a Jew shot 4 blacks who tried to assault him on the Subway and ended up as a folk hero amongst the people of New York including the black population despite prosecutors trying to throw the book at him.
To be honest I wouldn't have even cared if they had done the race swap but kept them as low socio economic thugs instead.
It wouldn't have stretched credulity so much, and it would have been a more interesting dynamic to see Gotham's elite feign outrage over the deaths of thugs in order to prevent an outbreak of socail unrest as result of the poor social conditions that they are responsible for.
It also would have made Arthur's vigilantism genuinely controversial, which to be fair maybe wasn't the story beat they wanted at that moment in the movie. But I think it would have been far more interesting and made the film far more rewatchable. Instead the whole stockbroker scenario just feels cheap and lacks nuance and only gets worse everytime you see it.

Scenes like this are always weird for me because I've never once been mugged, robbed, harrassed or seriously bothered by strangers in any way in public. I'm not a particularly imposing person, I'm a skinny white guy, and I'm out and about constantly in all kinds of dodgy and weird area; my city is famous for being crime-ridden, all my friends have been mugged at least once, but never once for me. I feel like I must be unbelievably lucky. Is being harrassed by strangers a common experience for you anons? (homeless schizos on public transport making weird noises or asking for money doesn't count)

Sounds like you should give your parents a big hug next time you see them for doing there best to keep you out of the line of fire growing up. I’m from Philly and my parents had to bend over backwards trying to keep me and my sibling from being victimized, catholic schools, white neighborhood etc, and I’ve still had guns pointed at me at least a dozen times and had to fight race wars for the right to exist in my own neighborhood during my teenage years.

My city is fairly safe but I have never been harassed in public despite also being out in weird places alone at all times of night.
I think, at least in my case, it just comes down to looking like a bit of a bum. I don't look like someone who carries anything valuable which means I'm a pretty low target for a mugging, and I don't look like someone who thinks I'm hot shit or is going through life with lots of success with money or women or whatever, which means I'm not likely to trigger some insecure loser who hates their own life and feels the need to take it out on people they percieve as more fortunate or arrogant or overly cocky.
The only people I know who have been harassed in public are people who are more confident and successful than me and also more physically intimidating. I think that tends to just invite more trouble than being a skinny loser who looks like he just wants to mind his own business.

When I was a teenager I would go out to weird fucking parts of the city to meet relatively dodgy women and I'd always wear these weird fucked up cargo trousers, old boots and this old beat up 80s bomber jacket. My neighborhood is/was a white working class catholic neighborhood. If you start going south or west you immediately will find yourself in a black neighborhood. White people take very nice care of their neighborhoods and they are always clean and safe. Black people see this and decide to spend their time in these nice white areas instead of their horrible black areas. They come up on busses and use OUR playgrounds, public pools, basketball courts, and go to our restaurants. They even trick or treat in PIR neighborhoods. I can’t find a parking spot anywhere in my own home on Halloween because invaders come every year to take advantage of us.

All of this is annoying as an adult. As a teenager it is often fatal. Their teenagers come up and want to take over all of the above mentioned places and we have to fight them off. It’s a generational war that’s been going on forever.

The movie makes much more sense if you imagine this scene went down as it did in real life. Murray stops being some arrogant media personality looking for ratings and starts to resemble Bill Maher or John Oliver trying to shill and apologise for scholars and joggers.
