I am not some massive Adric apologist, but he was far better suited with Fourth then Fifth. I think it is a mixture of Fourth clearly being pissed off with Adric, but both still attempting to educate him and be firm enough with him that comes across as a teacher or father. With Fifth, as the show itself gets at, the Doctor is barely giving him any attention and, what I think is a failure of Fifth's characterisation in general with his companions, the Fifth Doctor comes across as a substitute teacher who cannot control his class. Like Fifth getting annoyed with his companions is all well and good but, it is a passive-aggressive and bitchy annoyance he gets rather than being firm with them. People say Fifth is the nice Doctor, but really he is just passive.

It is not just historical companions, you could have non-Human or future companions as well - Zoe, Leela (who is a double future but effective cavewoman so past), Romana, Adric, Nyssa, Turlough. For all that can be said about Classic companions being static, the issue with NuWho companions is more than them being contemporary. The issue is is for whatever character stuff we can point to, 1) you have the tendency to make them the most superduper friend or important person to the Doctor; and 2) beyond what is really just a lot of superficialness, they are all cut from the same cloth in ultimate personality and outlook. You can maybe make the argument that Classic was running into girl from Earth from contemporary year with Tegan-Peri-Mel-Ace but, 1) Tegan got introduced with 2 aliens, then was there with another alien, 2) Peri was non-British, and Ace is clearly different two Tegan-Peri-Mel.
