I won't answer any questions about Hollywood scandals or any TMZ like gossip. I'd love to chat with real film makers. Also, anything you can easily google I won't answer either.

What's a good vhs-c camera

do you watch the movies you've worked on

I know this is more on the actor side of things, but I'm sure it applies to crews as well. Is the gross vs net income production budget scam as big of a deal as the internet makes it out to be? if it is a big deal how pervasive is it?

I do yes, I enjoy seeing the final result.

Can you be more specific in regards to the scam you're speaking out?

in your fifteen years what do you think is the largest change in the industry that has happened since you started vs how it is now?

I know it sounds dumb but the answer is the internet and the birth of the digital cinema camera. We never went back and I doubt there will be an era before these two movements again. The way we do everything goe streamlined over a hand full of years.

Okay the 'scam' I'm talking about is when the budgeters for a film and actor/crew casting will sign someone on a contract to earn a percentage of NET earnings on a film instead of GROSS earnings. they will ask for an incredibly high budget, and spend a crazy amount of that budget on random and frivolous production stuff like paper cups and random decorations (these are a bit of dumb examples but you get the gist) instead of the actual film, or even an unnecessary amount on the film splitting hairs and adding random shit. Basically money funnels. then when the movie hits theaters, it comes out as a "flop" because the earnings can't match the incredibly unnecessarily large budget the film had and production basically tells the actors and crew "Well after deductions of the budget compared to the profit. you get jack shit because we had to account for how much was spent compared to how much the movie made."
The producers and execs have their contracts with GROSS earnings before the deductions from the bloated budget and make bank from the movie, and then the cast and crew get the NET earnings after the bloated budget cuts into their percentage.

that's how some studios can keep making 'financial flops' on paper/numberswise and still make a profit.
I'm a bit of a plebian and I probably could have put it in better terms, but
TL;DR: budget contract fuckery makes paying people less easy

You are correct. One situation not many people talk about but is very real is an "insurance day."

One of the larger features I worked on I had a producer come to my boss and us and told us there may be a point in time where they don't like what they shot, or they might want to scrap the day for whatever reason.

They told us when that happens, we erase all of the footage and tell the insurance companies we don't know what happened. They get their day back via insurance and we don't get fired. Did that happen? Maybe.

The film industry is a very dark and seedy place, especially when it comes to tossing around money. It isn't anyone's indivudal money, it just happens to be there, may as well grab it.

Yeah but that is taking from
insurance companies (morally correct thing to do).
The whole gross v net thing is directly paying cast/crew less, which is shitty. Is there anything you do personally to avoid that kind of shit besides just reading your contracts carefully and working with one of the unions?
also for someone looking to possibly get into the industry, do you have any tips for navigating the seedier side of things that other spaces online/courses won't tell people about?
t. 22y naive short film/music video director/producer

And people wonder why premiums go up. This applies to all industries btw. Fuck these parasitic frauds.

You don't even realize how this hurts everyone else which is sad.

Do you know anything about compromat schemes or porn stars being blackmailed.

Favorite porn genre?

Twas a joke.
It was either do that or OP was going to lose his job. rock and a hard place, obviously don't go out of your way to commit insurance fraud.

The unions do a lot to ensure we get x amount of pay and often will hold a large bond at the beginning of a project before prep begins. If we have any discrepencies, the union will pay us through the bond and deal with the paperwork later.

When it comes to dealing with technician shit, say my cart is worth 80-90k... Over the course of months, production could technically buy that cart for me to use, fuck that I want the rental - Why did I spend so much money on gear if it wasn't going to make me money? So the more I work the less I should get?

That's how the industry works, you're just a line item. If it makes financial sense it doesn't matter what happens.

Do you know anything about compromat schemes or porn stars being blackmailed.

I do not

You're a real sicko, you know that?

I'll always say this. Anon Babble has the greatest minds on the planet, this is the place where we can be de-generates at the same time. The world doesn't usually allow us to have both, so this place exists.

I agree with this. I've come across some extremely intelligent people here. But because anyone can post anonymously it does require critical thinking to filter out the retards. Which isn't easy for probably a majority of people if we're being honest.

I enjoy that fact. It's almost an IQ test.

Yes, it can happen. I have no ties to the industry. Sure I'm a tech pleb but it is possible. Nepo babies get looked down upon in this industry... We know you know we know.
