Yeah it was shit, too bad because it had some potential with how it's set kind of in the middle of three cultures, two of them being amalgamates of several different but related cultures, but then it didn't do anything with it and just shat itself trying to be suspenseful. Also NIGGA NIGGA NIGGA.

I didn't like how it started off as a celebration of different ethnic cultures, but they totally forgot about white culture in the big dance scene near the start. They have chinese dancing when they show up on screen, and all sorts of black culture stuff, but they didn't show any white stuff like opera or ballet when Hailee was on screen dancing, really made me feel like my history is being erased. I can usually brush it off , but this one actually stung.

The final scene is literally a heroic strong black man with big muscles mowing down 30 KKK racists who came to kill the people at the dance.
Maybe that has some cathartic effect on African-Americans, some dumb revenge story about the racism and slavery, but it's still heavy handled and dumb.

"Why was an unnecessary element included in the story that ultimately added nothing?" is legitimate criticism you can put on several aspects of the movie.
The gunfight at the end, for example, was totally tacked-on and unnecessary after the climax had already occurred with the defeat of the vampires.

This movie spent so much time in the buildup to the juke joint party thing and then the vampire seige then just breezed through it in an unsatisfying way. From Dusk Til Dawn made you really feel the length of the night and the endgoal of sunrise but this movie just blew its load and padded runtime with extremely cliche interpersonal shit and coolguy gangsta dialogue that sounded retarded
