Way i see it SMG is the only one that can play that role (and yes, i´ve seen the original movie). Going with a new slayer is definitely a step in the right direction at the very least. Something like Fray has more chances of working than a hard reboot would have had.
I sincerely hope they find actual good writers that understand why Buffy worked as well as it did and find the right story for the characters. Personally, and i know this may be in bad taste, i would play the Dawn´s death angle. It´s the one thing i could see breaking Buffy for good and render her unable to care for the world anymore.
