I feel the exact opposite about this. If a cute Japanese girl wants to act like an anime character, that's fine. If some fat gross girl I went to high school with wants to run around in my high school PE class with her arms behind her back wearing a Naruto headband, that's cringe and she deserved it when I tripped her and she fell flat on her face.
Watch/read something by someone who can actually draw more than 2 faces/hairstyles and you'll have no trouble telling people apart.

This does not mean that every creation of theirs is going to be the same colour hair and a japanese-style face. It means that they can do it, and they have (as the example I gave proves).

That’s the problem. They want to make everyone so good looking, but there’s only so much you can do before everyone looks similar. If they cared about realism, they’d just draw the faces more differently.
