You haven't actually experienced Yu-Gi-Oh until you've read the original manga, and even then, Viz's version is pretty shit. But as a full story, it was really shocking to read something that was far more narratively and thematically cohesive than the anime I watched as a kid. It's a shame how it's all downhill after Duelist Kingdom, even with good moments after. The early stuff, especially DEATH-T, is so good, and it has never been done justice in any animated medium.

Reminder that Jonouchi defeated Yugi/Atem in a duel cleanly.
Jonouchi vehemently refused to take back the Red Eyes Black Dragon from Yugi/Atem when they tried to give it to him and he only agreed to accept it if he beat Yugi/Atem in a duel for it. Both Yugi and Atem respected his decision and agreed to hand the card back only if and when Jonouchi defeats them. Jonouchi having the card later proves he beat Yugi/Atem offscreen as he wouldn't have the card back otherwise.
To this day in canonical lore Jonouchi is the only character in the entire franchise besides Yugi himself to have defeated Atem cleanly (Raphael did it in an anime only arc). Kaiba can seethe to the end of time if he wishes, as it's something he'll never achieve.

Yugi is the main character, and Atem only takes over for Battle Shitty due to his popularity while getting his own arc after. Atem is a walking action figure, Yugi is an actual character. He goes from a meek, overlooked boy with a passion for games and a virtuous heart to the greatest duelist. Atem is not just the hypothetical idealized Yugi, he's someone for Yugi to surpass. The final movie Takahashi was involved in, Kaiba spends most of it trying to get one final Duel with Atem. Yugi is simply Atem's vessel, a means to an end. But during his duel with Yugi, he realizes that Yugi was far more skilled than he ever gave him credit for, that he was Atem's vessel for a reason. Even though the duel was interrupted, it was looking like Yugi had won. Kaiba may have had something to pull out of his sleeve to counter his seeming loss, but we don't see it, and by that point Kaiba realizes that Yugi is actually pushing him farther than he ever expected he could, he's having fun because he's being challenged in the same way Atem could challenge him. That's why at the end of it all, he does congratulate him as a fine duelist.
And in this image that Takahashi drew of them, it shows that Kaiba chose to fund Yugi's game idea and plays it with him.

Only time I can think of would be DEATH-T, but even then, it was only Honda who was thought to have been killed saving Yugi in one of Kaiba's death games. Then Yugi is forced to watch as Kaiba forces Yugi's grandpa to duel him using his Solid Vision hologram system where all the monsters attack him, being too much for him and giving him a heart attack. And this is all because dark Yugi put Kaiba through a penalty game in their original duel where he was attacked by hallucinations of the monsters he treated poorly. He liked the fear of the experience so much that he created holograms to exact revenge on Yugi and his family in the same way.

Pegasus. Kaiba kicks ass as a rival but Pegasus's over the top intrigue, malevolence, and cartoonishness was the perfect balance of tone. Add in that he was basically a final boss at the top of a castle forcing you to traverse a new map and defeat endless grunts and mini-bosses while dodging traps to get at him and had secret esoteric magic shit that was basically "the computer is cheating" mixed with "this isn't even my final form" and he's pure, unadulterated kino.
Shame they dropped Miho. I also appreciated how they overtly ship teased Tea and Yugi
True (though I do have a soft spot for the Chunin Exam, Dark Tournament, and a couple World Martial Arts Tournaments) but it's really hard to do Yu-Gi-Oh without a tournament arc. I mean the whole show is just a series of tournament arc. Duelist Kingdom? Battle City? I think the trick is just to mix things up so it's bot just episode after episode of battles and they have things to do in between.
Not to mention he custom created his own archetype that you couldn't attack or even interact with in most instances and constantly stole your cards to use against you
I liked the whole cheapskate angle, or rather how the Millennium Eye slowly corrupted him. He's shown in the past trying to save the one Egyptian guy, willing to pay anything, and years later, he cheaps out on everything once people arrive at Duelist Kingdom. No accommodations, sending people home by rowboat, and even the meal in the castle where they found the fake Millennium Eyes was basically water soup.
Now I'm remembering what a wasted character Bakura is. Not dark Bakura, but the regular one. Obviously dark Bakura needs to be the more important character, he's an aspect of the final boss and therefore the main antagonist, but they do it by making the original Bakura totally irrelevant and stripping him of all his agency, and nobody does anything about it. He stops feeling like a friend because nobody seems to care outside of lipservice. I just feel like they could have made him an actual character.
