Is there anything comparable in terms of pure, undiluted artistry (for two seasons at least..)? I don't care about genres, would be okay with a one season series, just something that hits the spot like Twin Peaks did.

Lars von Trier - The Kingdom

nothing is as good as twin peaks. people will say shit like the sopranos but it's just not comparable.

honestly not really. twin peaks seasons 1 and 3 are unmatched.

Duly noted, thanks

the best part of the original twin peaks run is the first 9 episodes of season 2 though

Yeah.

Yeah so..could you maybe..you know..if you could just..I mean..

no

No, but I find Twin Peaks to be extremely rewatchable. I'm pretty sure I'll keep rewatching Twin Peaks from time to time until the day I die and I I'd bet I'll never enjoy a TV show, old or new, as much as I enjoy Twin Peaks.

Poirot hits pretty good for that comfy 90s TV aesthetic of TV detective with apt artifice cheese to the proceedings

I started watching it for the first recently. I just finished the episode where Leland dies and BOB escapes. It's pretty good, I bought From Z to A the other day because I was enjoying it, though I had seen the international pilot years ago. Also bought The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer and read it right when Donna found it in Harold's possession.

Speaking of Donna, nearly every scene with her and James is awful. It's the most melodramatic soap opera garbage imaginable, and James makes Andy look smart at times.

Noice. Don't want to spoil your expectations but after THE event the series starts going down hill and Lynch explains it later in the documentary that ABC was pressuring them to wrap it up and after THE mystery was solved they struggled to find something that kept the story going.
Yeah Donna and James are indeed the most annoying couple, they don't have much chemistry eventhough Donna is a 10/10. Best couple (that should have been) is Cooper and Audrey

this, thank you, based.

Yeah, I'm wondering where it could go from here, because it just felt like a finale of sorts. I know random plot bits from here and there, trying to avoid spoilers but little things slipped through like Donna's real father, Cooper being trapped, and things I could gather from this cool Japanese trailer

Also had BOB's host spoiled for me so I wasn't really blown away by it when it revealed it, the Tojamura reveal was the true "What the actual fuck" moment for me that episode.

the rest of season 2 declines pretty badly, but stick it out, because the season 2 finale + FWWM + season 3 are the best bits of the whole thing. it really comes back strong.

Miami Vice, unironically.

And yeah, I'm surprised at how much I've come to like Audrey, she completely switched places with Donna, I thought I was going to dislike her. Cooper's a great protagonist, and I like that there is something meaningful between them, but I'm not sold on a romantic relationship. I do get a kick out of Cooper emphasizing to Diane that Audrey is 18 in his recordings, I also listened to the 45 minute collection of them released after the first episode of season 2.

I'm considering rewatching episodes in Japanese.

I'm considering rewatching episodes in Japanese.

where can I find these?

Supposedly they're on the From Z to A set I bought according to some websites. I've only tried the UHD disc with the pilots and episode 8 of season 3, but it only had subtitle options, so I wonder if I have to just change my Blu-ray player to Japanese for the audio. I've seen clips in Japanese though, and it was really big in Japan and had original commercials.

My man. I love watching Poirot just for the scenery and costume department. Plus they really nailed the casting of every character.

Yes, that was magical

Good advice anon, I concurr. It's pretty authentic

so I wonder if I have to just change my Blu-ray player to Japanese for the audio

You're probably screwed unless you have the actual japanese blu rays. Those are probably expensive as fuck. Hopefully someone uploads a rip some day.

TP seasons 1 and 2 (apart from the lynch directed episodes) are slop, dross, and only le coffee cherry pie fags claim its good. Season 3 is a masterpiece.

two seasons

Come on now, most of season 2 was shit; this is common knowledge

Look: Season 1 and 3 = 2 Seasons
Season 3 and 2 = 2 Seasons
Season 3 and 1 = 2 Seasons
Seasons 1 and 2 = 2 Seasons

Is the Z-A boxset region free?

Something tells me that the common TV watching person that shot Twin Peaks to massive fame and popularity in the nintetes probably found season 3 unwatchable arty garbage and thought that the soap opera middle third of season 2 was the best part

Okay, I just checked before going to bed (nearly 6 AM here)
Japanese audio is MOSTLY available on this set, for the material that aired in Japan. That means no "Previously on Twin Peaks" or pre-episode foreword segments are dubbed into Japanese, and the single UHD disc only has English audio. Japanese subtitles are available on everything though.

This is also how I'm learning that there are "Previously on Twin Peaks" and foreword segments. I had torrented the series and it didn't have that, but as I checked episode 2, it had a foreword with the log lady explaining dreams, then the "Previously on Twin Peaks" part, then the opening, then the episode.

Japanese subtitles are available on everything though.

rip the video and subs and put them on nyaa

I hate the "A to Z" subtitle, it's so fucking corny. "A to Z" would already be silly, but inverting it because "hurr durr red room go backwards" is enough to prevent me from ever buying it (I already got entire mystery and the return on separate boxsets anyway, which are far prettier than Z to A).

Sherlock Holmes 80s TV series

deadwood, carnivale, northern exposure

but season 3 is absolute kino

1) third season is best one, idiot but
2) nothing compares to Twin Peaks exactly and I doubt anything ever will. but in terms of artistry, as well as shows which engage head, heart, sovl (and subconscious!) I really rate Deadwood, The Sopranos, LOST and The Leftovers

I love Twin Peaks and Garth Marenghi Dark Place so I hope this is good

I love The Kingdom, but it's not really something I think about when I hear the words "pure artistry". I mean it's a shlock horror mixed with dark comedy.
The Prisoner (the version from the 60s) is probably something you're looking for, it does Twin Peaks 30 years before Twin Peaks.
Other than that, if you don't mind something very theatrical then I Claudius is really good and Wild Palms feels like they thought "let's make Twin Peaks rip off except it's cyberpunk!"

and Lynch explains it later in the documentary
