I've always wondered what it would have been like if Anakin had died of his injuries or had snapped out of it and gone into hiding (say Obi-Wan doesn't get on Padme's ship and she's able to actually convince him to run away with her). Suddenly Palpatine's most important enforcer and Jedi hunter isn't around and the survivors of Order 66 can mount considerably more effective resistance to his rule. Maybe not enough to topple him on their own, but enough to lay the groundwork for the Rebel Alliance much sooner.
