What's the last film you've seen that remotely resembles Welles, Huston, or Bogdanovitch? I was thinking maybe Spike Jonze's Her, The Social Network, or Whiplash. I'm not necessarily talking about good or bad. I'm talking about a subtle theme, impressionistic rather than realistic lighting, saturation, powerful performances, a full narrative. Music videos are closer to that than films now. Modern cinema is some mamby pamby bullshit about people talking about their feelings in a gray room.
